  • just to tell you Britain ppl helped us out in world war 2. My grandpa said he was caught by the Germans and Britain soldiers helped him leave. Just saying Britain ppl aren't that bad

  • for every U.S soldier in America i truly thank u i have family member who have served thank u for letting everyone have a safe life with freedom i could never ask for more thank u men and when for risking ur life for everyone in this country just so we could be safe and free thank u i love u <3

  • It doesn't really matter who really wrote it :/ even though this is an Army poem, it honors every U.S military man and woman who sacrifice their lives and comforts. Thank you to all who serve and may you all have a Merry Christmas, every American should know of your sacrifices.

  • @ibikedallas298 errr i think it says marine but what eff lol

  • My brother will be joining the marines once he graduates in may. It's going to be the hardest day ever just watching him leave, period. He is truly my best friend & I know he's gonna make a difference but this poem just makes me cry every time. Never fails.

  • Thank you to all who serve.

My man served with all his life. I will always live him.

"All have some, some gave ALL!"

I'll always love you my hero, my love David.

  • This is who we are, Sempre Fi

  • Written by Lance Corporal James M. Schmidt in 1987 under the title"Merry Christmas, My Friend."

The audio recording was recorded by Father Ted Berndt and daughter Ellen Stout. Father Berndt a priest at Bread of Life Charismatic Episcopal Church in Dousman, Wisconsin, a proud Marine, and WWII Purple Heart recipient.

Father Berndt passed away March 19th, 2004 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. According to his daughter, "All he ever wanted to do was touch lives...to make a difference.

  • I am the smaller sister of a US soldier. This story made me cry. I've heard it more than once. I almost never cry but this means more to me than anything. I will become a US marine and make my brother proud. To all families of soldiers it is as hard as being a soldier you have to carry on and not look back

  • @Bandgeek174 God bless you, little one. I'm so sorry you have to see all of the hateful comments posted here, where you came to read this poem and think about your big brother. Sending hugs and prayers to you, to him and to all of your family. From one Marine's sister to another...Semper Fi.

  • When published in Leatherneck (Magazine of the U.S. Marine Corps) in December 1991, Corporal Schmidt's original version, was titled "Merry Christmas, My Friend," and he actually did use the words "U.S. Marine," and NOT solder. Over the years the text of "Merry Christmas, My Friend" and the word Marine has been altered to change the Marine-specific wording into Army references including the title. So yes the poem was originally written by a Marine, but the words were plagiarized to fit the Army

  • @coyoteself The words weren't plagiarized to fit for the Army, when you say "Marine", yes you are specifically referring to the Corps, but by saying "Soldier" you are no longer just talking about the Corps, you're encompassing Airmen, Sailors, Marines, and Soldiers. Marines aren't the only ones that have to sleep in tents in the middle of the desert or eat MRE's for months or even sacrifice their lives for this country. We all do that. We are all service members in the US Armed Forces.

  • @Masterofspades While it is true that "Marines aren't the only ones that have to sleep in tents in the middle of the desert or eat MRE's for months or even sacrifice their lives for this country." But a better word to encompass all the services would have been "U.S. Troop(s)" and not "Soldier," which is specific to the U.S Army. Not the USMC, Air Force, or Navy. All of which are proud of who they are. But a Marines pride is a bit unique & to replace the word "Marine" with "Soldier" is an insult

  • @Masterofspades Also, while it may only seem to be a matter of semantics to most civilians It should be noted that. since the title is "Christmas Poem by a U.S. Marine" no self respecting (Or Shitbird) Marine would ever use the word "Soldier" in place of "Marine" when writing this poem.

  • @coyoteself It is semantics, yes. Maybe the altered version of the poem should be changed to read "Warrior" instead of "Soldier". That is what we all are, Warriors while some are heroes, yes heroes, what every Warrior wants to be.

  • I lost my oldest brother CPL.David M. Unger in October 17th 2006 in Iraq. I know what these guys and girls overseas have to go through on a daily basis, my whole family does. My second oldest brother even joined in honor of my oldest brother.. These soldiers go through hell for us.. no matter what branch they are in. So while your with your family this Christmas and everyone's there.. think of those that are over seas fighting, and ones that aren't even here...

  • godbless our troops and ther familys past and present if not for them we would not injoy the freedoms we have and godbless the real heros the ones who prove that freedom is not free cause they laid down ther lifes for us so we can have the freedoms we injoy now if not for them we would be in a world of hurt so next time you see a women or a man wearing our countrys uniform take time to stop them and thank them for ther service to this great nation

  • it is so sad how many of our women and men who fought for our nation that are homeless and alone at crhistmas it makes me cry every time i hear this cause it is all to true for a lot of our men and women in uniform who fought and lost friends and even family doing what ther nation ask them to do so even me and you and alot of us and especialy the ungreatful basterds that protested ther funerals so godbless our troops and ther familys this xmas

  • MY LOVE GOES OUT TO ALL TROOPS WHO ARE WILLING TO SACRIFICE THEIR LIVES FOR OTHERS. NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE FROM. THEY HAVE CHOSEN TO DEFEND PEOPLES RIGHTS ALL OVER THE WORLD...INSTEAD OF MAKING HATEFUL COMMENTS TO ONE ANOTHER ....TRY PUTTING YOUR EFFORTS INTO SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE.WHILE YOU ARE SPREADING VERBAL VENOM A SOLDIER IS DYING, TO KEEP SOMEONE LIKE YOU SAFE...... HOW ABOUT ENLISTING ???...NO I THOUGHT NOT....!!!!!

  • Have a heart, all,

the OP had his heart in the right place,

    it was a good story.

Also, allies fighting, does no good to help the cause,

everyone has pride in where they come from,

and in the titles they have earned,

respect each other, and be thankful we are on the same side.

    Semper Fi

    Honor, Perseverance, Spirit, and Heart.

  • this brought a tear to my eye

  • OorAh!

  • british royal navy can suck my balls and go drink some tea and crumpets, irish military can go play some bag pipes and go down on a gay black guy, the USMC are the best of the best. semper fi

  • @lukedillon1995 lol, your a troll and if you are in the USMC you don't derserve to be. i really USMC would have respect for basically there brothers. Look at canada, thats a fucking country i would serve next to no problem, it's people like you who bring america down. leave life please.

  • Nice Video but a Marine is not a Soldier. a Marine is a Marine it is a title earned not given. The Army can keep the Soldier I will keep the Title I earned. No offense to you who made the video but people need to understand the the term Soldier is to Generalized and in my opinion does not give proper respect to people in their individual branches.

  • @usmcmike1978 Agreed. I love the Marines, but my title is Soldier. I would not call a Marine such.. he has not earned it. I would not answer to the title of Marine, I have not earned it. Simple as that.

  • This is not the original. A Marine would NEVER call himself a soldier. They are Marines, not soldiers, airmen, sailors, etc.

  • listen u limey brit cunts...and u mini skirt wearing scott's ..if it wasn't for AMERICAN soldiers, sailors and airmen...you'd be eating kroutt right about now...and as for being emotional, I've seen men to which are some of the bravest, badassed Royal Marines get chocked up over less...WHY? Because their human and selfless and they know what life, freedom and love is worth, you wanna know what its like? Stand beside and with them in a fire fight, get hit by an IED pick up the bits of friends

  • @ schwartzy06...SEMPER FI

  • @vikinger112 nice racist speech their fucking yank if it wasn't for your friendly fire we would never have had any of these arguements of which force is better they are all EQUAL their is no top force no best of the best but i am from britian and i respect the americans the marines the navy the airforce the seals and the army all the same as my own countries forces its this kind of shit from both sides that start wars like afghanistan and iraq did racists and sterotypes.

  • kingdomofdalriada - it was written by James M. Schmidt, Lance Corporal, USMC in 1986. Learn how to use the inter-webs n00b. (Also, the version in this video is wrong...)

And Americans are sentimental? So I guess the UK is just going to pop down to the pub for a quick, single, pint to celebrate the ROYAL WEDDING in 2011. And then off to bed early so as not to make a scene.

Please. It's a nice poem with a heartwarming sentiment about service men and women everywhere.

  • i did cry, god bless the marines

  • i almost cried

  • What a cheesy faggot poem. Only an American ccould write such a cring worthy, disney-esque peice of crap.

All that was missing was some legless soldier and a bald eagle crying together.

I am sure American men hold each other and cry at least once a day.

  • Semper Fi to my brothers gettin some in Afghanistan. Hope to see you all in country soon. Because of you all the Americans can have xmas. ERRAH!

    PFC WELTER 0311

  • A Marine didn't write this.. I know because we're warriors not soldiers.

  • Yes actually a Marine did write this. It was written by a Lance Corporal in 1986. Just re-worded with soldier. The original uses the word MArine

  • Ahh, i see.

  • @weltermike Americans are far to sentimental for me. This poem makes me fucking cringe, Its completely over the top.

I am in the British Army and We have this poem hung up in our Naffi, we hung it up there so we can laugh at it.

  • @scottishnationalist

you brits just don't understand American Patriotism. your mocking a tribute to American men and women in uniform and i find that extremely offensive. these soldiers are giving their lives to protect not only the US, but the entire world. God bless all men and women in uniform who fight to preserve freedom and liberty.

  • @americanpatriot9102 shut up you complete fucking idiot.

  • @kingdomofdalriada i really dont see why my previous comment deserved such a heated response, i didnt bash anyone. i support our soldiers and hate it when i see someone say something against a tribute someone made for our soldiers...

  • @americanpatriot9102 Americans are far, far to emtional for my liking, to be honest they should really tone it down, they really go over the top.

And yes this poem would make most British people cringe.

  • @OOjiBoy ok, we americans are emotional... but it our patriotism. no one in this world understands american patriotism like an american. may i ask why it would make most british people cringe?

  • @americanpatriot9102 Because it is over the top, it is far too sentimental, I cannot believe a marine wrote this, it sounds like something a housewife would write.

American patriotism ? most americans couldnt find america on a map

  • @Bigp426 hahahhahahhahahahhahahhaahaha well said

  • Ooh Rah to all my brothers over seas this year its a shitty deal stay strong love all of yas

    cpl Duncan 0311

  • MY brother not a marine he still a miltary solider who is fighting in iraq i just wanted to say think you to all the solider"s and to the family the leave at home

  • ok this made me cry!!! I miss my Marine!

  • that's the world today. Nobody cares about who gives them the ability to do what they do. But yet when they see their defenders what do they do? Do they have parades for them? Do they congratulate them? Do they have 24/7 news conferance's when they die 60 years after the war they were in ended? No they save all that for the nancy boy celebreties.

  • This poem should have more views!

It's Christmas Eve now, but I wanted to wish not only the troops, but the families too a Merry Christmas! xXx

  • im thankful to have my husband home this year, but my heart still breaks for the ones who dont! may god bless them and keep them all safe till they are home safe with the ones they love once again!! this poem still makes me cry!!
