Brings a tear to my eye, I was only five at the time but i Remember that speech so well cause it was all in Irish which is my first language. I also remember my Dad and his brothers still enjoying the match a week later.

Pope John Paul II was in Galway the year before on the 30th September 1979. 280,000 people flocked to Ballybrit, Galway, to enjoy the papal visit. This was a special mass for the young people of Ireland. Ballybrit is near the house that Joe Connolly (the Galway Captain) was brought up in. But I like to call Joe a Connemara man.

In his homily Pope John II said: Young people of Ireland, I love you
