  • HON THE TRIBE!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  • Came across this in the GAA Museum at Croke Park and knew I would find it here.

As a Roscommon man, I find it absolutely fantastic and hard to avoid a tear even at this stage. Amazing, 31 years on.

  • Memories...

  • Brings a tear to my eye, I was only five at the time but i Remember that speech so well cause it was all in Irish which is my first language. I also remember my Dad and his brothers still enjoying the match a week later.

  • Question- who is the man who said "Galway we love you?" I'm American, so I'm not familiar with the players.

  • Pope John Paul II was in Galway the year before on the 30th September 1979. 280,000 people flocked to Ballybrit, Galway, to enjoy the papal visit. This was a special mass for the young people of Ireland. Ballybrit is near the house that Joe Connolly (the Galway Captain) was brought up in. But I like to call Joe a Connemara man.

In his homily Pope John II said: Young people of Ireland, I love you

Joe browed PJP II famous line. I think hell forgive him for that day that was in it.

  • Thank you very much. What a magical moment.
