I think he shouldn't. IMHO, the idea is that, according to the libretto, he is quite a "bad guy", more a seducer than lover. Just think how many times he sung this serenade for different donnas...)

Yes, he needs women, but doesn't he need them mostly for putting them into his list? Anyway, we cannot know for sure, so it is a matter of opinion. Both versions are possible.
