I'm mixed black/white from Jamaica but born in NYC. I have lots of Jamaican Chinese relatives. I did a DNA test and found out I have some east Asian too ;-)

They came after slavery as indentured servants to fill the gap as workers because the freed black didn't want to work on the plantations. They continued to emigrate here after that as they set what is known as haberdasheries or shops and sold Chinese made stuff. Just take a trip to downtown Kingston and see them in action early as 6.30 in the morning till nightfall selling their wares.

This is strange to many folks, especially my US friends. In de islands, your are a citizen of that country first..race after. No matter what you look like or who u pray to you are a native of that island e.g jamaican, Trini, Bajan. I am from Barbados. I never heard so much attention given to people's identity based on physical features and skin complexion until I move to America. Every official piece of paperwork you fill out you have to choose. What's more amazing is that there is only one option for "white" everything else is with gradations. My favorite is "Hispanic-Black" Hispanic-Not Black".

I have a cousin (Jamaican living in Kingston) who's half black and half Chinese. I met him 30 years ago when he lived in Brooklyn (The West Indian Capitol), New York before moving back to Jamaica. Chinese people have been in Jamaica for 157 years. I have a Chinese friend from Jamaica here in Florida with as much accent as my other Jamaican friends. When I still lived in NYC before marriage and family, I once worked for a White guy from Jamaica with more than slight a accent. Jamaica is diverse

@SADMANMUSIC35 Which hole you been under? Chinese are numerous in Jamaica. They came after slavery as indentured servants to fill the gap as workers because the freed black didn't want to work on the plantations. They continued to emigrate here after that as they set what is known as haberdasheries or shops and sold Chinese made stuff. Just take a trip to downtown Kingston and see them in action early as 6.30 in the morning till nightfall selling their wares.

This is strange to many folks, especially my US friends. In de islands, your are a citizen of that country first..race after. No matter what you look like or who u pray to you are a native of that island e.g jamaican, Trini, Bajan. In Trinidad you are simply a Trini,, you race /cultue just means we know whose house we going to when we want to lime(hang out)so we can eat curry, or roast pork or callaloo=)..Love de West Indies

to procreate. there is a law limiting how many kids you can have in china, even back then. no the case in the british colonies, so a chinese couple would move to a place where there is no law against having lots of children and have as many babies as possible. when the children were old enough, they were sent back to china. my mother had 10 brothers and sisters.

@yzuskin3 When Jamaica was still a British colony, the Brits brought the Chinese amongst other ethnic groups like Indians to Jamaica. They worked as indentured laborers. This was a very common practice all through the Caribbean actually.

When will the ignorance stop? Being of Jamaican heritage myself; but born in England. This is no surprise to me, I was taught the culture, by my family. There use to be a man named Mr Wong (Jamaican Chinese), who owned a shop up the hill. I use to go shops for my mother, and loved to go in there to hear him speak. The island is so rich in diversity, and I for one love it! I'm a product of African, Irish and Syrian.;My bf, African, Chinese and Indian mix. 'Out of many, one people' One Love.

I am from Barbados. I never heard so much attention given to people's identity based on physical features and skin complexion until I move to America. Every official piece of paperwork you fill out you have to choose. What's more amazing is that there is only one option for "white" everything else is with gradations. My favorite is "Hispanic-Black" Hispanic-Not Black".

I have a cousin (Jamaican living in Kingston) who's half black and half Chinese. I met him 30 years ago when he lived in Brooklyn (The West Indian Capitol), New York before moving back to Jamaica. Chinese people have been in Jamaica for 157 years. I have a Chinese friend from Jamaica here in Florida with as much accent as my other Jamaican friends. When I still lived in NYC before marriage and family, I once worked for a White guy from Jamaica with more than slight a accent. Jamaica is diverse
