  • Theres only 4 of them, but I cannot understand how there are any dislikes on this. Its a brilliant Smiths song, being played brilliantly.

  • Seriously amazing version!!

  • earwicker for King!!

  • wow congratulations!!

  • This sound incredible....makes me wish i was better on the guitar. Is it tabbed anywhere?... Sick of replaying each 3 seconds of the lesson (thats the first three seconds by the way). Cheers man

  • your smiths covers truely are astonishing, i just cant stop watching!!

  • Love it....

  • note perfect. nice job

  • wow mate this sounds brilliant

  • what do you mean by writing skill???

  • maybe he meant that Marr wrote incredible music?

  • te pasastes amigo realmente me as dado una buena leccion pocos tutoriales son tan demostrativos como para alguien que quiere aprender no se si podrias sacar mas temas de the smiths gracias:)

  • does he play play the bass seperately? or is that all played at one time by the same guitar?

  • very good!

  • wow - great job. Marr may be the most underrated guitarist in history.

  • Me gusto

  • Dang you're good.

Hearing that Rick chime out like that kinda makes me fantasize about a Johnny Marr, Roger McGuinn guitar jam. Wonder what that would sound like. Ooooh. Makes me shudder just thinking about it.

I love songs like these! Thanks, dude.

  • More generousity as soon as I find another of your vids i just automatically rate it excellent..props Daniel San :)

  • Daniel thats brilliant mate!

  • Aye mate you can hear it quite distinctly.

  • I love this

  • when u sing along to it its need bringing up a key :)

  • I play mostly fingerstyle. If I use a pick I play the odd note up one octave for ease. Daniel is au fait with this style of playing, so don't sweat it - just do your version. I don't think it's possible to replicate the recorded version exactly, too much going on even when the intro is solo (too shimmery!). I saw two slightly different tabs and they both sounded right! Marr skips strings at speed and fingering/changes can be slightly awkward too - but that's his style, and he's great at it.

  • Amazing!

  • This is wonderful.

BUT- Does anyone notice that there is NO CAPO on Marr's guitar in the live version of Girl Afraid on youtube? What's that all about?

  • that's cos he tuned it to F#

  • man i wish i could play theguitar ihave an acoustic and a bass and can on _i got sunshine-by the temptations

  • Well just practise as many hours a day as you can, in a year you'll be able to play this. Well, you'd have to practise this kind of guitar playing to really nail it but you get the picture!

  • the comment about humming the bass line has made me chuckle

  • very good, thogh it makes me sad i'll never play like that

  • doesn't help much...just make a tab.

  • Speak for yourself. It sure helped me!

  • What works for ones doesn't work for all....I'm not denying his talent, i watch his vids all the time.

  • No, he's humming that. Yes there's a bass! He plays a lot of instruments - try some more of his vids.

  • lol

  • LMAO.

  • Almost as good as the actual recording. Very cool.

  • Yeah, that's it... I always forget to try out a capo!

  • brilliant

  • Very nice, I've always wanted to learn how to play this song, I saw someone else demonstrate this song on youtube with a 6 string Strat type guitar and he played the intro differently moving up and down the neck. It sounded right but so does yours. Are you guys playing basically the same thing, except since you have the 12 string you don't have to move up the neck? I've never played a 12 string before, yours really sounds incredible.

  • because of this guy, Rickenbacker sales have gone up 17%.

  • haha. you may be right :)

  • Daniel, Great job! Could you give us the chords?

  • Hello there, your guitar playing is excellent as you probably have been told many a time, but I was just wondering did you teach yourself or have lessons, and do you learn these from tabs, thanks, and again brilliant x

  • After watching your videos I have to lay back and smoke a cigarette. You are awesome. I love all this Ric Smiths stuff.

  • ok that's better ;)

  • Great Video!!! As a smiths fan, i want to say thanks for putting your guitar playing on youtube. Much appreciated...keep 'em coming!!!

  • Are you a Marr human clone??? Wow dude! That's great Smiths' music performance.... So fuckin great... I'm amazed.

  • Great video, lovely guitar.

  • Where's the right hand?

  • jajajajja

  • This is excellent.

  • wicked

  • cheers mate(Y)

    that was great

    i did it

  • class!

  • Very nice. Probably the hardest Smiths song to play and you've pretty much nailed it.

  • awesome!

  • Hi Dan...do you have any of your smiths work for sale on CD, I really love your interprations of their work and the clean sound you get.

  • I use Macs, they have a built in camera which I use for all my videos (except the earliest Headmaster Ritual one, done entirely with a Fuji digital camera, including the sound).

  • Hi Daniel, on daylymotion, there is a live version.

are they the same chords ?

  • aagh! this is so frustrating - i've been trying to work out this song for ages, and you've nailed it- but i can't see what ure doing with the pick!

  • Better than sex!

  • hey thanks for the advice on wonderful woman. i ended up figuring it out by ear mostly. Hey, i don't mean to sound like a spoiled kid but could you perhaps try figuring out 'these things take time' or/and 'you've got everything now'? i'm almost giving up hope.

  • sounds dead good on that rickey!

  • Awesome. Some cruel chords but hellfire mate you showed people the way to go. Keep it up!

  • you rule mate.. you rule! Best amateur marr performance i've ever seen..

  • I've been playing guitar since 1982 and when Johnny Marr came along, I just though, "Untouchable", but became an obsessive and bought everything he ever did (to this day). I've since strummed along to quite a lot of his stuff (although I did learn Heaven Knows properly about 17 years ago and decided it was far too much work), but you've inspired me to persevere and have a go. I can't tell you the amount of fun I've just had learning this with your video - thank you so, so much.

  • Very glad to hear it.

  • Ditto, Marr is a pain in the arse and stuff like this is indeed and inspiration.

  • Is this right? Capo 2nd fret and the shape of Dmin and Amin. If so I'm picking the top 2 strings and it doesn't work like how you play?

  • When you play Dm along with it, does it sound similar at all? It's standard tuning with capo on 2nd fret.

  • I take it this is capo'd on the 2nd fret? Just like to say thank you for putting this on. I'm at the stage of getting bored with my guitar and want to learn to play all Smith's songs without just strumming! Thanks and keep em coming!

  • i posted the tab for this (the live version) on the very first guitar tab archive at nevadaedu in 1991 or 1992 (now called "the guitar archive"). I've since seen the tab copied to many other sites. you can find it at: guitartabcom.

  • Very nice job! Wonderful - and Johnny Marr is such a challenging guitarist to emulate, so I'm glad you did the slowed-down version too. :) Not to nitpick, but it would be lovely if you could get your right hand into the frame as well.

  • dude thats really good

  • Well I actually have the tab where all the notes are shown, and its easy to learn just correcting that small mistake :)

  • You can't always go by tab. I have simple, tabs in published books that are wrong. The artist's aren't the ones who write the tabs. Someone else does it.

  • I know that, I know that. But I´m quite sure it´s more correct than this. But its also great that you make your own versions of songs, like this dude

  • Well there are a couple of wrong´s...

When the "D minor" chord comes after the intro, you play a few "bright" notes which arent really supposed to be there

otherwise great job. and how do you recreate that sound?

  • I remember the first time I tried a Ric 12 string in a shop, it seemed like quite a let down. I was used to accoustic 12 string, so yes, a lot more cramped. But if you play it for a while, you adjust to it. You might want to check out the 660 12 string - doesn't look quite the same (more of a 1950s shape), but the neck is about half a cm wider and apparently that makes a quite difference.

  • Does marr play this on a 12 string?

  • Oh yes, good one. Probably a lot of fun to play.

  • If I remember correctly, Handsome Devil is capoed up at the 4th fret. Other than that, it's super easy to play too.

  • Very nice, Daniele. I used to hear Hatful of Hollow album a lot in the 80s. Marr followed the Roger McGuinn tradition with his clean Rickie, but with his particular style.

    Marcio, from Brazil

  • How the hell do you do this? Do you read other tabs and then work off them or do you do it all from scratch?

Voting for Accept yourself and Heaven knows I'm miserable now next.

  • I have never understood tabs. I just listen to the records. Sometimes I watch a live video on YouTube just to reassure myself that it isn't impossible to play. I've always wanted to learn 'Accept Yourself' so I'll try that next - someone has pointed out that 'Heaven Knows...' requires a tremelo arm, and I am unarmed.

  • sweet sound
