@aletter1718 the sad thing is I don't think they'd get much use out of it nor our submarine vessels since most weapons aren't designated visually anymore and our ability to see in the water with visual spectrum isn't that great to begin with. I can see it working in the bahamas to hide from visual surveillance from aircraft in midday but past that, kinda useless till it works in air.
@Gibbons3000 The question is how much heat energy is transmitted by the water after it absorbs from the nano-tubes. They might figure out a water-gel that works, but hides the heat. Still, this is just phase one. They still need to cancel out radar signature, etc.
If you read how they made this work - then it's not actual invisibility - the sheet just turns into a mirror - look at the sheet supports - they're not visible when the sheet is activated, because it is reflecting light from the left. And the tech is nothing new - just a heat mirage, like you see on the horizon.
@ZanyRocket controllable mirages are certainly nothing that has been done before. And while a mirror is just as effective at bending light, that isn't the point of this experiment. This kind of technology would be applied to military vehicles, which would be incredibly useful because all you can see in a desert is sand and sky, so concealing something like a tank with mirrors would be that hard, but mirrors break and it would be impractical. nano tubes are light and basically indestructible.
@commetsmasher You've got a point, but the military applications may result in a large problem in the infrared spectrum due to the heat output from these sheets (if they can manage to keep the sheets in one piece out of water). Many military vehicles are equipped with infrared sights that would make this an effective beacon during daylight. Plus nano-tubes are only comparatively "indestructible". At the thickness used in the video, I'm sure that they are easily tearable.
@commetsmasher Also, a controllable mirage is not something never done before - it's just the speed of switching that's new, in my opinion. Any hot, flat surface can make a mirage in air.
If this really uses the mirrage-effect (refracting light), then it would be "invisible" only if viewed from certain angles and in an environment of a certain color. So, "masking" would be more accurate.
I remember being excited about this when we did it in my school science lessons 16 years ago. Well done guys, you've earned those smiley face stickers on your homework.
So basically this works by bending light the same way heat waves do over a blacktop, desert or horizon? I feel very *facedesk* - the concept answer has been with me since I was 2.
a calor gerado e a energia necessária num se´r facil, mais temos o primeiro tipo com baixa tecnologia, falta agora uma dose de engenharia pra as curvas de luz e aplicabilidade,

This shit scares me. I thought we weren't supposed to get this capability until we were already in a highly advanced civilization that wouldn't use this to kill people.
@dolph123454321 These carbon nano tubes are extremely light and can be use to make a bullet proof vest. Maybe even explosive proof vest. However the carbon nano tube maybe toxic, do not know yet.
Carbon is awesome, just check out what you can do with graphite or in this case graphene. MWA HAHAAHA.
@hipermatriz i don't get it, why is there always an idiot on Youtube who never believes anything and post a very "creative and original" comment saying "Fake" Im sorry but it kind of pisses me off...i think people who post the "fake" comment should at least give an explanation about why they think is fake, don't you think? well it's just my opinion.
Infrared scanner will detect only if infrar. electromagnetic waves are passing through. You can design a material that absorbs it and the sensor will not get it. Just like glass does. Infrared cameras doesn't sees you if you're behing a glass door.

@Dregkar Put the coin under the glass of water and try to spot it by looking through the side of the glass. (Light is refracted, because it travels slower in water than in air.)
I don't quite get what they are researching here. What they are doing is already well known, but I guess they are trying to make a usable product. Whatever it is, I can see it being used as an invisibility screen (shield), but it seems very far from an invisibility cloak. I am sure the heat is immense.

@wipexe The angle is on purpose to reflect that back "cream color wall" by the blade sheets when they get heated (its similar to the desert vision making the sand looks like water; its the SKY reflex going through your eyes)
@wipexe it was done at an angle because you wouldn't see that it says "invisibility cloaks".same thing with holographic picture you used to get at mcdonald's.
