If I saw this ending originally it certainly wouldn't be one of my favourite ever films like it is now.
I SO happy this isn't the version I saw on TV! Although, even though I think this ending cheapens it immeasurably, it would have been nice to have it on the DVD copy I subsequently bought.
It's funny to think that such a fantastic film is only so due to a fluke - what luck! I hate having a story force fed to me and having everything wrapped up in a neat little package, like this nearly did.
@xwgrace Well, it's not actually like there are two alternative endings. There is a short ending and a long ending. The short ending excludes everything after 0:30 in this clip. But the long ending includes everything the short ending has. So the one you saw one youtube must have been the long ending rather than both.
I also prefer the other ending. They are in basque country because in the boat there are three flats : the spanish one, the french and the ikurriña ( the basque). They probably are in the north of basque country : Biarritz or near.
One of my absolute favorite movies of all time. Have to say I actually prefer it without this ending, though. It makes them too much into the Monkeywrench Gang. The other version just has more subtlety; it leaves the questions and complexities still echoing in the air, whereas this ending ties it up far too blithely. "... And then our intrepid heroes continued on ... next stop after monkeywrenching European TV: Glen Canyon Dam!" Too easy. So glad to see it, though!
@CRUSHBOY11491 I thought that man had a blue boat? Because when Jan and the girl are sneaking around his yard, the hull definitely looks blue. Unless he had multiple boats.
@sofiipote7 I agree with you on that, I think it's enough to let viewers know that they managed to get away with it, there's no need to actually show where they are. We all see they're somewhere else because they'd foreseen what Handerberg was gonna do. I prefer the other version too.
@gab3alex The point is not that they "foresee" what Handerberg was gonna do. He clearly tells them in advance with this ending, and allows them to use his boat for their plans.
They are sleeping in a Hotel near the Island with this TV-Station(I dont know the real englisch name of this thing) The Gentleman in the car is allright. He informed the Police and watched to this action.
Sie kappen die Seile der Sendemasten, damit das Fernsehprogramm in Europa ausfällt und die Menschen aus ihrem Viel-konsumieren-und-wenig-denken-Trott herauskommen.
I saw this film in German with English subtitles, but it ended with the part where the maid comes in to knock. However, I don't understand what Jan says to Jules and her boyfriend (Peter) later on at the restaurant . Can anyone translate for me please?
Jan says: We're at the Eastern side of the isle, just about here... One stays in the boat, two cut the ropes that fixate the antenna towers. A bit later all 13 ASTRA satellites should be disrupted. TV transmissions all over Europe will black out.
Great film. The note was meant for Hardenburg and was reflecting the Edukators views. It was saying that even though he had changed and become a rich capitalist they weren't going to abandon their ideals. Good for them! ;-)
Well i think that it means the rich guy never changed coz he is still a man with all his money and hasnt changed even though through the film he understood where Jan, Peter and Julie were coming from.. if you get what i mean. So there, some people never change.
the normal end (which ended before the scene with the boat) does not make any sense. It makes you believe that finally he went to the police but it does not explain how the activists suddenly were in a very good hotel or what the note means. It says some people never change - it means that the rich guy (I don't remember his name) is still as he was in the past (like the guys who kidnapped him). I don't know why they decided to cut the last scene and change all the meaning of the movie
I think maybe where it says "some people never change" may actually mean that Hardenberg HASN'T changed because even though he seemed to change while kidnapped he still lied and went to the police anyway. That is my take on it anyway.
yeah he tjing is that if you remember when watching the movie the old kidnapped guy told the young guys about hisself, when he was young; that he had the same ideas and was political left and not like he is today. so you see the guy never changed.
i really prefer this ending because its positive and lets some space for an open end.
I think that the end that it's shown on tv is not bad, it's even better in the way that you're in a suspense when you see the police knockin' on the door and then you find out that in fact the edukators are gone. Of course, the origina one is ok too, but it's not very surprisingly ^^ I'd prefer the other one
Great movie- I just saw it 4 the first time (germany) but I heared of another ending. And exactly! :-) The good base-idea is still preserved and all the intelligent informations about this sick system but that censored ending is a kind of consequence which is missing now.
It's almos a miracle that they showed us that movie in the public television- in contrast to the typical propaganda of the rich ruling minority- but the true ending obviously is already too rebellious 4 them. ;-)
I think that it was Hardenburg who wrotethe note - it's his handwriting, plus if the 'Edukators' had written it, it would have been typed & it would have been signed 'The Edukators' like all the others. Also 'Some people never change' would not have made sense, because Hardenburg was a hippy in the past. Harbenburg had to have written it.
I think they steal the Yacht, because they're looking quite shifty - the clothes must just be to seal the 'look'. Maybe.
I don't think it was Hardenburg who wrote the note:
The identity of the Educators was revealed by Hardenburg at this moment; no need to go through the trouble of typing the letter out.
Secondly, Hardenburg was a master in lying as indicated in the phone booth, he could have easily made those 'hippy' stories up in order to get released.
When I saw this movie in Denmark, it was with this ending. I think it's fine, because the note "Manche Menschen ändern sich nie" didn't make any sense to me, since Hardenberg HAD changed (he said that he had been like them back when he was young).

Also nochmal.

They arent living with Hardenburg, and they didnt take everything of him. They dont agree with the capitalism, and that woman wasnt hardenburg maid.
The thing is, hardenburg called the cops, but before that, they left the apartment, i guess handerburg warned them about the cops. And now, he is helping them with that idea of cutting the tv transmition, remember? We can tell that he is helping them, because he borrow his boat to them.
