Damn, that one P-47 pilot had at least 18 kills. There was probably more, but the crew chief standing there was blocking the rest of the fuselage. There was a lot of allied aces, but 18 kills (especially for a P-47) must have been pretty rare. Those a/c weren't known for their agility in a dog fight.
@jonesy97 That is just a bad myth. The P-47 was an excellent fighter aircraft and was agile for its size. The "Jug" could out dive and out barrel roll all other fighters and once the paddle blade props were added they climbed well also. They were very heavy in a turn and generally couldn't turn with 109 or 190.
There were plenty of high scoring Jug pilots and the two top aces of the 8th AF were P-47 pilots. The 56th FG showed that the P-47 was definately a great fighter aircraft.

@jonesy97 Nope, Bong was the master of the Lightning. Bong did things with the P-38 that stunned other pilots. You are correct, he was the top US ace and was killed flying a jet fighter. Ironically, Bong loved the P-38 for its two engines and he died in a P-80 due to it single engine failure. And after fighting so hard he died on the day of the first A-bomb and never got to see final victory.

@Elgastonable Yes they are some kind of aircraft aren't they. Had two that came for an airshow and arrived two days before. I got to sneak into the hanger where they were parked, and got caught. The pilot told me to stand clear of the aircraft and after talking to him for about 20m he let me sit in the cockpit. WOW! It truly gives you an idea of what those guys did during the war and how "old" the equipment is.
Boy, there's no doubting six .50 Cals (P-51) or eight (Thunderbolt) sure made one hell of a mess of the target whether air, land or sea.
What the lads of the RAF wouldn't have given to have a battery of just four .50's equipping each of their Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain - alas they just weren't available to the RAF at the time.
A few pilots of the era (now sadly departed) reckoned well afterwards, they could have doubled their tally so equipped.

Too bad the original sounds were lost. I know gun cameras and many others here had no sound to begin with but some did and it is all lost due to someone along the way deciding music was better. Help preserve the original audio by not adding music when actual sound tracks are available.

Damn, that one P-47 pilot had at least 18 kills. There was probably more, but the crew chief standing there was blocking the rest of the fuselage. There was a lot of allied aces, but 18 kills (especially for a P-47) must have been pretty rare. Those a/c weren't known for their agility in a dog fight.

@jonesy97 That is just a bad myth. The P-47 was an excellent fighter aircraft and was agile for its size. The "Jug" could out dive and out barrel roll all other fighters and once the paddle blade props were added they climbed well also. They were very heavy in a turn and generally couldn't turn with 109 or 190.
There were plenty of high scoring Jug pilots and the two top aces of the 8th AF were P-47 pilots. The 56th FG showed that the P-47 was definately a great fighter aircraft.

@jonesy97 Nope, Bong was the master of the Lightning. Bong did things with the P-38 that stunned other pilots. You are correct, he was the top US ace and was killed flying a jet fighter. Ironically, Bong loved the P-38 for its two engines and he died in a P-80 due to it single engine failure. And after fighting so hard he died on the day of the first A-bomb and never got to see final victory.

@Elgastonable Yes they are some kind of aircraft aren't they. Had two that came for an airshow and arrived two days before. I got to sneak into the hanger where they were parked, and got caught. The pilot told me to stand clear of the aircraft and after talking to him for about 20m he let me sit in the cockpit. WOW! It truly gives you an idea of what those guys did during the war and how "old" the equipment is.

Boy, there's no doubting six .50 Cals (P-51) or eight (Thunderbolt) sure made one hell of a mess of the target whether air, land or sea.
What the lads of the RAF wouldn't have given to have a battery of just four .50's equipping each of their Spitfires and Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain - alas they just weren't available to the RAF at the time.
A few pilots of the era (now sadly departed) reckoned well afterwards, they could have doubled their tally so equipped.
