  • 2 monsters, but for me Vinnie hands down. I couldn't really set Dave and Vinnie apart because both display wonderful and awesome statements, just brilliant, but when I heard Vinnie doing "straight" pocket pop albums, Vinnie just blew me away. Vinnie has such a heavy pocket, and grove. You van just tell that it was Vinnie playing.

  • Weckl cringes at the mention of Vinnie's name. I like around 2:07 or so when Vinnie really gets the crowd charged...Dave tries to match Vinnie's intensity but can't.

  • THERE ARE MANY BRILLIANT DUMMERS N THE WORLD BUT....

NO OTHER DRUMMER ON THE PLANET EVEN REACHES THE ANKLES OF DAVE WECKL !

IF YOU DISAGREE YOU MUST BE A SPECTATOR AND DEFINITELY NOT A DRUMMER YOURSELF

  • DAVE WECKL RULES !

  • Yeah because I wasn't already feeling bad enough about my playing before this right :-P

  • TEAM VINNIE!!

  • Whats the name of this song, I mean the first part of this video, not the solo part.

    Is it Tania maria?

  • Vinnie. No doubt. Vin has style, talent and technique. Dave has talent and technique.

With Weckl I always have the sense that his playing is too well thought out. There's something sterile about Weckl, not enough spontaneity. Of course still killer good; just kinda predictable after 5 minutes.

And Vinnie does it all from behind a tiny kit.

  • @ScumOfCaligula

Hey, thanks for the insight. I would love to here you play. I bet it sounds like ....................well........Scum.

  • @MrQstixx Eat my shit, suck my cock, fuck your mother and kill your children.

  • @MrQstixx Oh, and, dumb ass, you misused the word "here" for the word "hear..." Lols.

  • if u lsten carefully! u can hear wich spang better!

  • thumbs up to dave! dave is much KaBOOM than vinne ! HONEST

  • You guys gotta understand Vinnie maybe older than Dave by 4 years but Vinnie's been on the scene longer than him.... since the 70s and he play way more difficult music than Weckl was (not that he's not compable) when he started out. Then Vinnie has always had amazing chops and he's known for that. Dave is best know for his loose phrasing and his use of toms and cymbals. Two different drummers.

  • @TIMMYDEEZ what the hell does 4 years matter when your in your late 40´s... nothing

  • Vinnie is my favorite drummer, but Dave is just RESPECT!!!

  • peter criss

  • team weckl.

  • yep thats true. but, dave is a better drummer for sure.

  • @EroticTofu No he's not. There is no "better" once you get to their level.

  • Better?! Who gives a fuck! There's know one here in a position to judge these heavy weights... Know your place and appreciate mortals!

  • weckl is the better drummer.

  • For those who think Weckl isn't in the same league as Vinnie, lookup "Dave Weckl Drum Solo -- DrumTek 2006". Vinnie can't touch Dave, and Dave can't touch Vinnie.

  • dave is the bigger name, if we look worldwide.

  • Súper masters band.

  • what is the name of that song????

  • wow... guys! you are great!!! so bad quality of the video and so constructive comments here.

And as for Vinnie and Dave - what they think? Who is better?? NO! They think about music and about what they do! And they both do a great work unlike you all.

If you like some one better it doesn't give you right say that other is worse.

Musicians like Vinnie and Dave are top of jazz olympus!

No necessities to compare their. they make music not for this!

  • Both drummers sound fantastic! Vinnie (along with Jeff Porcaro) is my #1 though. Since studying with Gruber, Weckl has matured infinitely. I love them both.

  • Dave and Vinnie are both fully out skilled in techique and as a musicians, let´s be honest about that?!

Dave `force´ himself allways to play hypertechnically with shops here and there,... Vinnie on the other hand do some incredible tasty technical fills in the music he plays, and offcourse groovemastering it, and he doesn´t force himself to it!

Dave is better in soloing, Vinnie is better in music..

  • For me, both are great but Weckl is more original, melodic and more aggresive now, that makes a big difference! Vinnie sounds too much like Tony Williams (is not bad). In the world of recordings, Vinnie is the best by far!

  • @2611em i agree

  • I dont know howmany albums vinnie played ,more than 4500 who konws?anyway both drummers are really alternative each other,,interesthing that why weckl doesnt play w any diffrent band, for example allan holdsworth,John Mc Laughlini, or any diffrent player, can be singer too ,whatever,I m liltle borred to see vinnie s behind the every singer or etc.. ,weird that thing s I love vinnie,he s my favorite drummer actually ,,but weckl s getiing interesting daily ,anyone w me,

  • I dont care what they play in as bands. im looking for who's more skilled. But Colaiuta does some sick stuff with Jeff Beck..check it out if you haven't already.

  • the sax player is i rick margitza, he's a cousin of mine

  • Umm. I don't think this video was posted with the intent of getting everyone to choose sides.

  • @inimicalODDITY ... i dont think any video is ..but thats what happens

  • dave weckl the best......

  • respect

  • in what event is this?

  • its all about Weckl

  • Thumbs up if you can see the lightning bolt connecting their drumsets. or maybe its just me.

  • Comment removed

  • @guitarkevin1 beacuse its 2 of the greatest drummers of the past 30 years on stage together, which just about never happens. The historical value of this far outweighs the video and audio quality (at least to us drummers)

  • @Dcdrmwthme Hey, your right man, (or woman), I was just in a bad mood that day, and I know that's no excuse. I usually am a really open-minded musician, and those drummers WERE really good, I just don't know a lot about famous drummers...now I feel like a real dumb-ass! I'm sure you'll forgive, thanks for setting me straight! Goes to show me, I shouldn't talk about things that I know nothing about! I wish you lived near south eastern Ohio, I need a drummer to jam with!

  • @Dcdrmwthme

Hello drummers, if you want see Weckl and Colaiuta together with good sound, try to find "tribute to Buddy Rich".

So Weckl + Colaiuta happened a few years ago !!

  • @Dcdrmwthme

Hello drummers, if you want see Weckl and Colaiuta together with good sound, try to find "tribute to Buddy Rich".

So Weckl + Colaiuta happened a few years ago !!

But this video stay a rare one. Thanks to share.

  • it's definately from an old chick corea song

  • Where is Gadd ?? :P

  • SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @sccobra281 Thank you :)

  • What's the name of this song ?

  • Comparing is dumb. Both are great. Vinnie is even greater :-)

  • @SoulamSee what??? comparing is dumb followed by Vennie is even greater? That is comparing right?

  • WHAT A FUSION MESS!!!! WECKL and VINNIE COMMON!! GUYS!!!

  • I prefer Dave (not comparing, just saying I like Daves' style and groove better)

  • @Jyamadrums how can "not compare" and say that you prefer one over another?

but I fully agree with you!

  • I would like to see them both with just snare, base and hihat...

  • @markvanderwerff You'll be blown away. And in fact if you look up the internet you can find video's of them with very small sets!

  • Both are extremely gifted drummers!! I am inspired by both!!

  • In this video I am going Dave 1st Vinnie 2nd, same with the Buddy Rich tribute video with Weckl, Gadd and Vinnie, by themselves I liked Dave by far the best and as a trio Gadd was the best to me!

  • What we need here is a better sound; cause the sound of cow is already there and the bell kislls the ears !

  • What we need here is more cowbell!

  • vinnie plays everything and all its a master pieces of music in all styles vinnie its the genius of the drums in this century

  • what's the name of that composition?

  • The title is Spain (I can recall) by chick corea. Theres a version of al jarreau also.

  • Chick Corea - Spain

  • Spain

  • it's like watching buddy rich and louie bellson to me they borth are great.

  • 1st : vennie

    2nd : dave

  • Must be an C.C. Electric Band concert (early 90s?)

I wonder, what is the use bringing 2 high profile drumplayers together on stage? competition? pretension? I had a similar feeling when I lately watched a video on YT: Jeff Berlin and Jaco Pastorius on their bassguitars each one trying to say (play) I´m the better one... Should that be the meaning of virtuosity? I wish it would not!

  • I prefer Weckl..

  • I prefer Brian Blade.

  • ..I prefer Vinnie

  • me to!! i think the most like vinnie they both super!! butt i prefer vinnie!!! vinnie is a gentle and lovin person to dave is more an arogant person!! i have met both!! vinnie knows all the theorie but i think hey plays most from the hart!!! and his hart speaks!!!

  • invinciVinnie!!

  • I prefer Vinnie to Dave.

I can't name one recording with Dave on it that I still really enjoy..... ok, maybe that Steve Kahn cd with Anthony Jackson on bass.

But Vinnie is on so many memorable recordings. Love him or hate him, his fingerprints are everywhere.

  • His stuff with Jing Chi is really good, I thoroughly enjoyed that. Check it out if you haven't already.

  • @larkydozer .... thats a really good point , and I like the approach you take with your opinion ... recorded music as opposed to just solo drum chop suey ..... Having said that , I still really like Dave`s recorded work with M. Camillo as well as his work with the Akoustik Band

  • @sweetfly66

Hey, thanks for the reminder. I love the Camilo stuff also.

Also... thanks for being genuinely friendly on YouTube... it's a rare experience for me as most folks will usually tell you off in their very first comment.

  • @larkydozer does it really matter who's been on most or best recordings? i prefer weckl but i love them both, they both do different things and have different qualities but if I had to pick I'd say weckl

  • @pedness

It matters to people who like recordings which are "best".

  • @larkydozer Wow you must not know much about Dave then.

  • @dylanacious

Could you make a more vapid, uninformed comment, based on knowledge you could not possibly possess?

  • @larkydozer Easy bro i'm not trying to get into some ridiculous senseless argument. You like Vinnie, you like Vinnie, simple as that.

  • @dylanacious

Yeah, pretty much. I was in awe of Dave back in 1988. But then my taste in music evolved and I feel like Dave hasn't evolved as a composer of music. Most of the tunes you hear on his own records are just terrible. Vinnie suffers from that as well I think. Check out Benny Greb if you haven't already. He and Jojo Mayer are doing some wonderful, creative drumming and music.

  • @larkydozer Well,i respect your point of view.I do find it hard if not impossible to compare anything Dave has done even within 50 miles of terrible.Granted i admit there's some songs on his cd's i just skip over i'm not to crazy about.I appreciate and completely get evolving musical taste. But Daves band just has that thing they do that gives them their sound.I mean geez bro,Rythym of the soul?Great cd.I agree to disagree I think Dave and Vinnie are iconic figures in music. So much can be said

  • Respond to this video... Just not enough room on here.

  • @larkydozer ok now decide who's better watch?v=UJsybbSHfx4!

  • @larkydozer Steve Kahn - public acess? :)

  • @SlikOZZY93

Yeah, that's the record. Haven't heard it in years... don't even own it anymore.

The tune "Kamerica" and "Blue Zone" were really great. That record is what I'd hoped Andy Summers would have achieved in his electric jazz recordings.

  • whats that song???

  • spain by chick corea

  • spain is a great song. i had to learn this music when i was in a group... it can be quite challenging to someone who's never played this type of music before. still fun!

  • muaha spain.. is played by my favourite drummers

  • shoot both of them! Where is the story telling in there solo's...All chops...so gay! Gadd shoild of been here to pull them in line.....Again!

  • first of all the sound on this vid sucks.

So what are you talking about.

    theprofessorwilliam

  • gadd is the boss in groves

but weckl and colaiuta have the tecnike!

    just can't compare them!

  • You just compared them.

  • i didnt

i explained that you can't compare drummers without the same level or nivel

  • I wouldn't say Gadd is boss, I prefer Dennis Chambers for a good groove. Personally.

  • lol there is no bass whatsoever!!!!! just treble

but they are both god's so, WHO CARES!!!

  • This concert have DVD?

  • Vinnie carries Dave in his BACK pocket- VICENT is GOD now that Tony Williams is DEAD

  • I agree with you! even if he is speaking of two world drummers! however Vinnie is a musician, while Dave is a...phenomenon from booth

  • My God man you speak with such sensativity. Do you play drums. When you

die mybe you will see Tony Williams.

    theprofessorwilliam

  • weckl for president!!! Yes we can!

  • this is epic!!!

but 2 bad it's only in that quality.

  • Steve Gadd Should be There too!!! But Still it's good! but the Audio is kinda bit Unpleasant!

  • if you want gadd , weckl , and vinnie together go watch kings of drummers , or whatever its called ... its epic

  • when was this concert?

  • Very cool...Two of my favorites sharing the same stage....I love it!!

  • weckls kit is hilarious

  • this must be reasant cos weckls using the pheonix

  • Billy Cobham rules!

  • some of the best musicians at the wolrld, i see... ERIC MARIENTHAL, FRANK GAMBALE, naturally, great drummer COLAIUTA , WECKL and the greate CHICK COREA!

  • wow....................................quit now.

  • Chambers is a groove master dude, there aren't many people out there that can groove like him...not to mention his insane chops.

  • wow man never knew they could tear up spain so bad ass like this. this is killer. just imagine if vinnie colauita was dennis chambers... oh boy that would be too much.

  • are they playing return to forever?

  • No, this is spain.

  • Spain was by Return to Forever. Light as a Feather. It just wasn't the most famous lineup yet.

  • if you guys want to hear weckl play straight ahead check out the chick corea akoustic album dave is great on it but my personal opinion all around i would take vinnie over weckl ,, weckl almost plays to perfect technique etc but he doesnt take the risks like colaiuta does check out vinnie on the karizma document album right when you think vinnie is gona fuck up doing something crazy he pulls it back together only like vinnie and tony williams can do

    vinnie>>>>>weckl

  • dos maestros, no se puede decir cuald e los dos es mejor, pero me gusta mas weckl, colaiuta es genial, dos de los mejores definitivamente

  • Yeah, they're 2 gods. But now I'll search some videos where I can hear what they're doing. Reading their names in the title doesn't fully satisfy me.

  • 2 great ones. phase differently. play differently. dave behind the beat, vinnie on top of the beat. dave uses rests nicely, while vinnie fills open spaces nicely...i prefer strait ahead jazz drummers more.

  • Both can play straight ahead jazz......Vinnie is on countless straight ahead recordings.

  • you are correct sir both "can" play strait ahead. Tony Williams "could" also play rock...my point (although i did'nt think you'ld make an issue of it) is that these drummers are much more notable for their command of modern idioms of jazz and rock.

  • Who's who?

  • on the left it's Dave Weckl, and on the right it's Vinnie Colaiuta (as we see the stage)..

  • is this video an extract from a dvd?

  • Doesn't look like it (or sound like it).

  • like what? like weckl and colaiuta? certainly are they... the yamaha logo in weckl drum set, the glasses of colaiuta, de grip of each one, the color of the drums... chic corea a little fat:P it`s all real

  • Most importantly, Daves hair. Theres no confusing that hair..

  • i think cathoderoy meant it doesnt sound like extracted from DVD... its a low quality video taken from someones cell i guess... the audio is a bit delayed also. nonetheless its awesome..

  • mucho props to david marienthal on alto sax as well as these gods of the drum world

  • Hey any of you know looser know how to dance and properly fuck a woman? just a question

  • why?? pretty random my dude, just enjoy the music

  • They're both so great...

  • you mean steve gadd and jeff porcaro :D

  • ... yeah, right...

  • Them too.

  • The only better video would be, Jeff Porcaro alive and on stage with these two giants of drumming

  • ahhhhhh Spain! totally awesome song

  • boring

  • Could the sound possibly get any worse?

  • Is there any way to clear up the audio? You know, reduce or eliminate the "hssss" sound?

    great post, though!

  • vinnie is the best

  • haha i put negative.... your funny if you were joking

  • u can say that twice

  • How silly...I don't think so. I dont think anyone rationally thinks that either.

  • Wish I was there.

  • this sounds in 4/4...is it?

  • yup, i was able to play this song on the vibes:)

  • Spain <3

  • the thing w this multiple drum performances is that you cant make any sense out of the whole noise

  • if i'm not mistaken...that's Chick Korea on the Keytar and Frank Gambale on the Guitar. Too bad we can't hear anything clear.... BAD SOUND

  • Cool post. Thanks. Both of these guys are such an inspiration. Neither one is the same drummer they were 15 years ago. They've both moved forward so much.

  • Oh my god...theres a guy with a KEYTAR!

  • wish the sound was better.. it sounds like a mess

  • vinnie is a drum god, thats all there is to it

  • waoh vinnie n weckl ...... does it get any better:S? loool

  • I can't say who's better. They're both ten times better than I'll ever be. I'll say this, Dave Weckl's solo albums all sound like weather channel music. It'd be nice to hear him play something cutting edge, like Terri Bozzio.

  • I have a saying:

Dave makes easy things look hard and Vinnie makes hard things look easy.

They are both great, but I'd have to give Mr. Colaiuta the edge in the "cool MUSIC he's played" department.

  • This is magic. I would have paid my humble top dollar to have seen this live in person. Very, very fine drummers. Just incredible. I'm so glad they chose to play together that evening.

  • I was fortunate enough to see Weckl with the original Acoustik Band several years ago. I was blown away by his playing then. Fast forward to '06 and a Sabian/Yamaha clinic he gave. His playing during that clinic made his playing from when I first saw him look amateurish by comparison! He's an excellent example of how a player's evolution is always constant.

  • Fuck !!! i wish the sound was better. 2 of the greatest ever !!!

  • Its strange to be mainly watching and this clip instead of listening like we usually do to these guys, but I've never really noticed just how graceful Dave Weckl really is to watch! Its beautiful, like waves crashing on the cliffs or something. But don't get me wrong, I still know and understand Vinnie as one of the greatest who's ever lived!

  • yeah, weckl just has completely impeccable technique. It's really the best I've ever seen, because he plays everything with such ease. It's almost like no matter how crazy his playing is, its still well within his ability

  • i'm sorry. comparison irks me

  • boo.. that's gay.. :S

  • I think Steve Gadd smokes them.... I like Vinnie more than Weckl though.. Vinnie is more musical and less show off! Steve and Vinnie the best drummers!
