I thought I could teach myself hangliding and after a 20 second flight that was completely out of control I broke an upright but fortunately nothing else! Please do not try to teach yourself it is near impossible I would say. I got my license in 1 week of actual professional training!

As a hang glider pilot of 30 years, I found NOTHING remotely amusing about this video or the morons who "starred" in it. They are Darwin Award material! This is how people die. It may be funny to them now but losing a loved one is never funny and that is where this pair is headed. Over the years, we in the sport, have tried to overcome the early stigma placed on hang gliding by the actions of people like this. These types of videos do our wonderful sport no good.

The only problem I see here is that when he dies, yes when, because odds catch up, people will start saying that HANG GLIDING is dangerouse, when in fact is quite safe when someone who knows what they are doing is under the wing, I mean A wing, not a home made kite or whatever.

Don't be lulled into thinking that only being 30 ft up is safe. In fact almost all serious accidents occur at very low altitudes, like hitting the ground! We lost a pilot this year when his glider stalled at 10 ft, breaking his neck. He later decided to be removed from life support and passed away. Hang Gliding can be a very enjoyable and rewarding sport, and it can be relatively safe with proper instruction. Get lessons and come join us in the sky.

That old thing isn't even close to what people fly today. The control frame is what sets the geometry of the glider. If it stalls at 30ft, you will plummet nose first into the ground. If it's not controllable you will crash going however fast it goes. You could cartwheel into the ground. I'm as crazy as the next guy but simple things you won't think about can kill you! For real, I'm not being an alarmist, things can go from kinda-scary to mortally dangerous in under a second.

Can you recommend a good place to get a 1980's parachute? Nevermind, found one on ebay! Can you recommend a chute packing method? Nevermind, I found a backpack it will fit in. How do you deploy one of these??? I'll just tie a rope to the parachute so I can pull it out of the backpack while I'm falling, brilliant!

Hang gliding is a great sport, but what you are doing (how you are doing it) will result in a death. Hang gliding is safe if done right; you are doing it wrong. From - a long time hang glider pilot. Grab the yellow pages, call an instructor.
