My favourite film is Midnight Cowboy. Years ago we watched it & after the presenter said "Don’t switch over you are in for a treat, a BBC broadcast of Harry Nilsson performing his songs on the piano". He sang Life Line, one of my favourite songs. It’s like he’s drowning. I remember watching thinking I’m right there I’m drowning with you. That was the most affecting thing I’ve ever seen musically.
@BobDenby "What's the deal at the end with the audience and the awkwardness?"
Harry agreed to perform for the BBC with the agreement that there wouldn't be a live audience. He didn't do live concerts, ever. So the footage of an audience was just for effect here. At the end of this song, they apparently used footage of another BBC audience gathering.
Harry is acting out expectations of a reaction from the crowd, but there was no crowd during his performance. They were edited in afterwords.
@fumanxxx Thanks, very interesting. I didn't know he didn't do live performances. Love this song. I think I like this version better than the one in The Point. Thanks again for the reply.
Love this song. I covered it myself on my last record, which I humbly suggest you check out.... the artist is Kurt Hagardorn, the album "Leaves", you can find it on itunes or cd baby
Don't forget that when he's singing in the movie those long pauses are L-O-N-G ECHOS-os-os-os....He was such a Heavily talented guy it would be amazing to see how long it took for him to write the songs. I "hear" the story came very quickly. Thank you for postinG ,this. and WHERE IS THE REST OF IT? =}
Gosh, the song is poignant enough, but then when he ends and looks out to the "audience" to find all those blank stares and some of them walking out at the back...unh. It appears to be orchestrated for bizarre comedic effect. (By the director of the show and Harry?) I hear Harry did not like to perform live in front of audiences. Maybe they played around with that? I wonder if this is how he thought people perceived him and his music? With indifference and boredom? If that's true, how sad. :-(
@VerdureVision I've seen more of this - and yes, you're right... he was sort of playing around for comedic effect, the audience reactions to his performance. But it made me think too... why's he doing that?
This song is so beautiful and this is an excellent version. I love "The Point!" so much. The lyrics, the arrangements, and the vocal style just seem so innocent and pure. Seems like it was made more for psychedelic adventurers than children, but I suppose all types of folk could enjoy this wondrous stuff.
@gr01000101g actually, the point and all its music was inspired when Nilsson was on an acid trip looking at all the houses around him and seeing that everything had a point.

@BobDenby "Thanks again for the reply."
You're very welcome. There are about 8-10 songs from this BBC show.
Probably all on YouTube.
Just take note of Harry's clothes and you will know if it's from this same performance.

@VerdureVision His "sense of humor" kinda kept him from becoming a name EVERYBODY would know. His song choices weren't liked by the 'suits'!
