Whoops I Iam deeply sorry, I forgot the Marquis de Lafayette you were the man!!!! sorry France I guess you have a few real men just not in this video ,Lafayette you Rock RIP!!!!
The french chicks were hot .. but the french guy were ..... uh uh less than manly uh fashion plates to cool to rock or smile posers uh snobs with no rhythm uh like rock anti matter no wonder the french lose every war and never produced great rock bands like the WHO the english rule!!! The greatest rock band ever playing in front of French Zombies OMG!!
I agree, when he took on the Tommy persona he became a monster showman. One of the best. Up there with Plant for sure. Blond curly mane and finely sculptured abs and pecs underneath the leather vest. Painted on Levis and Cuban heels. Favorite pose was when he raised the mic in both hands, stretching to the sky, head bobbing downwards. I can picture him doing that during the craziness of Sparks or Young Man Blues. Wicked!

LOL , i get a kick out of seeing people trying to dance to the Who. And i find it pretty funny that Pete changes his guitar for the last song when they are obviously not playing live.
@gawagney Nearly. It is A record but not THE record. That is to say it's not the best known 45 version of 'I'm A Boy' but rather the alternate take that appeared on the compilation album 'Meaty Beaty Big And Bouncy'.Maybe this alternate version was issued by mistake in France (lots of other groups had alternate takes mysteriously issued in France and on a French EP there was a version of Anyway Anyhow Anywhere with a totally different vocal)
Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac also played this gig. Check out 'Homework' on YouTube. The audience are fab. Watch the interplay as they eye each other up.
@Porthlevenfan Yeh, I noticed that, but then it IS a French crowd. What d'you expect!. ...Who's dressed in what? who the 'coolest', hipest etc... Good though, huh?
Pete broke the strap on his Gibson at the end of I Can See For Miles. For Magic Bus he's playing Steve Marriotts black Gretch. The Small Faces also played this show.
@unclealbert72 The Who are my favorite group, and I have to say this is AWEFUL!!!!!! I NEVER thought I'd see Roger lipsyncing. He's doing a pretty bad job of it too, especially at about 25 seconds in, when the mic isn't even near his mouth and the words are still coming.
@LearnerChess Don't forget, around this time, and after, due to the Musician's Union in various counties, predominantly England and America, live, the exception being orchestras and some big band jazz ( and of course, opera) on TV, was not allowed. I've seen The Who miming loads and loads, it really isn't unheard of...catch John Entwistle not touching the strings at times (as well as taking his playing hand off an' resting it on the guitar for a couple of secs.)..... A great band, nevertheless.
@gawagney Hey, thanks for the reply. I have much of their live music. Pete's improvisation was such that he never played a song the same way twice. Sometimes on two consecutive concerts he might play a song very differently. There was much interplay between Moon, John, and Pete. The Who do NOT mimick. This aweful fiasco proves how bad they were at it. I think they were blind-sided by this. They did tinker with Leeds a little, making the completely unaltered Amsterdam concert their best live show
@LearnerChess Am with you on all you've written. They were awful at miming, but I put that down to the group just 'taking the piss' at the ridiculousness of miming to a record, and also their boredom having to do it....Just catch John's face when miming a single to when he's playing live... One rests one's case, hahahaa!...All the best, LearnerChess (Great name, by the way).
@unclealbert72 ya OK that makes sense, the next day would have been Jan 1 1969. 6 months from here they would be deeply involved in Tommy. Roger with full Tommy mane, Pete in his boiler suit and docs and John in his skin tight skeleton suit. Big Time transformation. I was only 4 years old but they played my hometown of Ottawa, Canada twice between May and August 69 (only played here once since then, 4 years ago). My 14 and 16 year old brothers were at 1 of those Ottawa shows, man I envy them.
This is proof that the world is full of nincompoops: you have the Who in the studio and you ask them to fake a performance. Go figure!

what's hilarious is when Roger does his trademark microphone spin and nearly decks the girl sitting on the stage!

Man, I we need to invent a time machine NOW. I'm still (kinda) young at 28. I'm sure these chicks would "dig".
any more days go by, and i'll just be too old.
girls from the 60's are HOT. I COULD go ahead and date a woman in her late 60's early 70's. but that would be kind of wrong.

Just a correction.
This is New Year's Eve 1968
They were recording Tommy during this period.

That's exactly right, my mistake, thanks for the correction! :-)
ShorthandedGoal 2 years ago
My pleasure :-)
Thanks for posting this...not much Who footage from this period.
You can kind of start to see the transformation from a singles band to a album / concept group.
The energy between Moon and Townshend is becoming more intense here.
Take good care!
