@KobySGSRV No, I just realize that there's no "end all, be all" of vocalists, genes, looks and fashion. Its all in your damn perception. Remember "eye of the beholder"? Yeah, that.
hmmm....I appreciate the effort by Soundgarden, a band I like and respect a lot, but Cornell still had his Rob Halford thing going on with his vocals here, and I don't think that fits this song too well.
heres the thing Robert Plant cant reproduce his vocals live quite as good as he can studio when they do 10000000000000 takes and master it.... Chris Cornell is just as good or better as a singer even though I like Robert Plants voice better
@PsychedelicLSD have you heard chris live recently? probably not if you think he better than Plant. dont get me wrong, I love Soundgarden, and Audioslave, but i wouldnt pay to see either of them live in this day and age because when i saw Chris perform solo, it was awful because chris sucks live,
Robert Plant early days were INCREDIBLES. Just listen the Danish TV Show, or any 68 - 73 show. BUT, in 1975 Plant got a VOCAL CORD infection. That was the reason why his voice failed in concert like Seattle, in 1977. All people will get old buddy... you, me...
AND, in 1969 there were few kind of voice masteries... not like nowadays, with the fckng autotune and thousands of cheap tricks haha... even justin bieber has a "good voice" haha
I pray to god Soundgarden have a full studio version of this somewhere and release it on their upcoming B-Sides album. They just did Led Zeppelin proud.
@TannerCKG Don't try to educate these mofos; they probably don't even understand why there would be no youtube in the 90s. You're just wasting your saliva.

@vanhalenfan74729 When I got into Audioslave, I didn't give two shits about RatM. That has changed, but still, Cornell is a fucking awesome singer as well songwriter.
@vanhalenfan74729 I actually listened to Audioslave for Audioslave. Soundgarden has been my favorite band almost since then-I was four when they broke up so I had to discover them backwards-I could care less about RATM. I respect his decision for working with Timbaland. The product sucked, but the intention was to try something new and make money on the side.
OMG! This is killer. I'm huge fan of both bands, what a score, I love how Chris covers Zeppelin songs. He is the best at it I think. Check out Jimmy Page with the Black Crowes though, its pretty cool too. Thx for sharing
I think Chris Cornell is the only person that can sing Plant without sounding like a moron (well, besides Plant himself, obviously). Instrumentals kicked ass, too.
I dont see how somebody who listens to Rock n Roll can say they arent influenced/familiar with Led Zeppelin, they are so ubiquitous. If you listen to Rock n Roll you know about 2 dozen Led Zep songs period.
Soundgarden's early days had the most unique guitar sound in the world - all that reverb and delay made it so psychedelic and tubish, dude, it was awesome!
lol no reason to compare them, plant had a sweet intimate voice, but he only had a falshetto, cornell combined his with his chest voice, which i havent even seen the strongest of opera singers manage to duplicate, fact and matter for me, i love zeppelin and sg as two of my favorite bands, because each song is completely original, on a technical vocal level, i dont bother comparing anyone to cornell, which is exactly why he has his following some might be obsessed and some know what theyve heard
I know you're not slamming Plant, but I don't know if I would characterize all of Plant's high stuff, especially first album, as falsetto. Cornell might have taken it further for raw power, (as could be expected with 20 years to improve upon the original), but Plant ripped some vocal cords on the first album.
It's not ridiculous at all, this has been debated about for decades, Plant had a naturally high tenor voice (and somewhat still has though it has altered and his use of his voice has changed too), Cornell too can sing high notes without falsetto, and he too does a great job, have seen them both live many times and they really know how to rock! :-o
Actually Plant isn't a giant influence on Cornell i watched an interview of Cornell a while ago and he was never really a big Led Zeppelin band and he was wondering why so many people were comparing Soundgarden's music to Led Zeppelin's music well they started listening to it saw that they were similar but Chris just sang this way on his own and wound up sounding similar to Plant. Pretty amazing.
I understand Cornell may say he wasn't influenced by Plant, but make a list of all of the high-pitched, gritty-voiced, insanely powerful psychedelic rock singers before Plant. It's kind of like any blues rock player saying he hadn't listened to a whole lot of Robert Johnson before he started.
I heard Cornell say in an interview that Led Zeppelin never influenced him. It wasn't until after they made it big that he listened to them. The video I'm referring to might even be in the related videos
Musically maybe too grungy, but vocally the best i've ever heard live (including Zeppelin). Mindblowing the ease and power with which Cornell could hit impossible notes.
Then maybe you've heard a recording I haven't but I've heard three live Zeppelin versions of this song. In the early 70's Plant went down the ladder instead of doing the high notes, later 70's he cracked trying to get to the high notes. The studio version's amazing, but live Plant couldn't do this to my knowledge.
thats because in early 70s he was exploring his voice and he was not a 100% sure bout every note and in the later 70s (1974) he had to do a voice operation that made him unable to hit many notes and he coud not get that high as he did from 68 to 74

listen to bbc sessions version of this song. It's live, and he sings it in full voice, not in mixed and falsetto like Cornell does here (wich sounds quite like a bitch screaming, despite the greatness of Chris...).
You can also search the video on youtube called "The King Of The High G". Listen to it.

I love Grunge and I love Led Zeppelin, so what's not to like? A lot of Grunge bands were influenced by Zeppelin.

Too bad Chris Cornell wasn't an adult in the time of Zepplin. He was what Robert pitifully wished he could be.

I like Soundgarden, but I have to LOL... this is an absolutely HORRIBLE cover. Better luck next time.

sorry that sounded crap
ollieb12319 3 years ago
Because the idea of a cover is not to be the same as the original. Otherwise whats the point?

they shred it? no they make a so-so cover.

Soundgarden should have done a cover of "Immigrant Song". That would be fucking epic!

I always thought SG was one of the few bands worthy of Zeppelin cover. They had the all around talent for that music imo.
