Joe was great. I saw him at least 15 times throughout the 70's-80's in Manhattan (Village Gate, Blue Note, Village Vanguard etc.) and he never dissapointed the audience! Clapton and his kind must shit their pants when they see videos of him play, especially with Oscar! Incomparable. Genius. Never to be duplicated. RIP Mr. Passalaqua.
what the casual listener may not realize is that this is very hard to play in time, by himself. That's what makes a guy like Joe Pass better than an srv or b.b. king, not to cross genre's, but he is musically just at another level, as much string bending passion that an Albert King type wants to put into a solo, it still doesn't equate to reaching that other level of perfection that a Joe Pass type has. He just had such a wide vocabulary of chord phrasing and educated depth, that he is above
@johngoo343 I agree, enormously, although jazz play-alongs, i.e. Aebersold usually solves the problem of playing in time, for me anyways. A metronome is great, but not all that challenging to the ear. Master a blues, which includes a minor, half-diminished and diminished chords, in all positions of the neck, and you too can fly through changes. At any rate, Joe Pass at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 is the greatest blues and jazz record ever recorded.
I regard those slashing noises, not as reverb malfunctions, rather as Joe Pass whipping his whip of jazz on his guitar. The sound of supersonic improvisation
its all in the mustache.... and being beat as a child to practice

Busted tubes and a broken reverb tank. Joe Pass is still unstoppable.

the noises are the reverb it´s broken
funkyevil 3 years ago 10
Yep.. It's the reverb I believe. I heard the noise on the LP Viyl I have of these sessions too.
Great playing of course!
BattyCuss 2 years ago
@funkyevil It's not reverb - it's the sound of his pic breaking the sound barrier.

jedijenkeez45, love the video.
The last musical track... I think it's no. 17 on the dvd... is my favorite Joe Pass piece of all time. And I have so many of his albums.
I saw him play live about 10 times.
My favorite musician.
Do you think you can upload that?
Thanks
