I would put her up against you any day on this species, but no way would you do that due to the fear of having your butt kicked by a woman at a "fish farm"

@MrBloodyAngry yes it is a hard thing to deal with, the fame of being a top professional fishing the biggest 3 fresh water species in the world! including the Giant Fresh Water Stingray (in the wild) but of course you would have no idea about a ray measuring 2.5 meters round, let alone to fight one, but I wont hold that against you !! hahahahaha

@KiwiFishingBangkok ,i troll with live bait around one of the best headlands in oz.cobia and kingfish often take 300-400m of line from my spool.you spend money to fly to thai and catch bottom dwelling scavanger fish.nz has some great fishing but i suppose its easier when the fish(bottom sitting scab)are handed to u on a plate.don't u dare call yourself a fisherman

300-400m hahahah that is nothing mate!! all on a little kingfish haha

there is no way that a kingfish will pull 400m on big game gear mate, try using some real fishing gear!!! anyone can have a run 400m run on 20lbs line!!

this is not being handed fish on a plate, this fishing is harder than sea fishing after all you have very little obstructions in the sea!!!

on the actual mekong river, the GIANTS are very very very rare, though occasionally they catch them in the 200-300 pound range .. nothing like in the past when a catfish was 10+ feet long and over 600lbs

I have fished all about the world and the Giant Mekong Catfish I fell is one of the best fighters pure power!!! a 20kg fish will have 50 lbs gear bent up and screaming. so think what a 90kg one can do!!!

here are a few facts for you to help educate you blinkered views on this wonderful fish.

1/ the Giant mekong is not a veggie, it is a scavanger, it will eat anything, it also has teeth for the first 2 years of its life

2/ there are a lot more than 500 in the wild becasue the Thai govt is running a breeding program and releasing them into the wild!

3/ this is a private lake that is stocked from the fry produced by the govt, that means that it is helping to produce an income for the breeding program!

3/it is also a DNA bank for the future

4/ the sports fishing of this species is helping the species, not only generating money but also getting the giant mekong known internationaly!!

what did u used to catch it - bait fishing or lure fishing? will it take on lures? will a 175 yrds baitcasting (low profile) reel on a medium heavy action rod sufficient for the fight

ok this is a lake in bangkok, they wont take lures, they use a rice bran mic to fish them, as for gear, well you see the loadings that I have on this rod, you need to have a short rod and strong gear or it is not fair on the fish!!

they kill tackle and rods!!!

cant remember, had to many now we have landed some of the largest Giant Mekongs in Thailand on rod and reel, also held the IGFA record and we landed what is classed as the largest Mekong ever a few weeks before the french man did :-) I will get my act together and post some others soon ( Bigger!!!)

This was not a fishing trip as such, this was me on a day off, I am a fishing guide so it was a bit of a let your hair down (haha) type of day.

we went out and popped some big fish out the water, 3 infact were landed but only two are shown on the clip.

the fish were released unharmed and very healthy!

catch and release means education of the species, better education means more chance that this wonderful species can survive.

lets not forget the DNA bank of private fishing lae that ensure there will be fish for our children!

you are right but in the wild they are classed as a red flagged. very endagered as a species goes, but thanks to sport fisherman it has generated funds to help the Thai goverment breeding program for restocking the Mekong Delta River.
