Anyone who thinks that the league didn't fuck the Leafs over in this series is out of their mind. There's this, the Gretzky High stick, etc, but they knew that if the Leafs went on and eliminated the Kings, their would be almost zero interest on the other side of the border. Ratings would've plummeted
Who knew that the era of real cheapshotters has not yet begun (Carcillo, Cooke, Tucker...yes, Tucker, admit it, Ruutu, McSorley ctd.,, Avery, etc.). Of course that was a great year for the Habs, but would have been cool if the Leafs had made it to the final. Not cool by the Kings in that game. Like I said, it's become an NHL regularity.
but yeah, Pat Burns ftw, not only back then, but until his last day. What a guy.
My best hockey memories, would have loved to have seen a Toronto/Montreal final, as I'm sure the rest of Canada, rest in peace Pat, thank you for some of the best memories of my life!!
@Klitschkos3Gaye1 yep the guy blows the finals, he's unhireable and considered a punchline across the hockey world, while the coach he faced is being lamentedas one of the best of his generation. Yep he got the last laugh. Too bad the jokes on him.
The years he spent in Toronto were great for us Leaf fans. In the 40 years that I've watched the Leafs no other coach had the fire, desire and intensity behind the bench like Pat Burns did. He will be greatly missed, my condolences go out to his family. R.I.P. Pat Burns.
@6:00... its sooo beautiful to see the Gardens with the red and yellow seats and the ice and whatnot. MLG is so classic! I wish that place was still the Leafs home
LOL...Pat burns sucks worse than Melrose. I remember this series. The Kings won got in the leafs head.LOL In the end, the Kings won. And they had the cup, except for your favorite player's crooked stick. HAHAHA.
@mikez565 Well, there is a thing called Loyalty, right? Stick with your team through thick & thin. All fans do so, but only Leaf fans get called out for it. Why?
If we want to still support our Leafs, we should be able to do so. Yes, the team has played poorly over the years, but I'd rather stick with the Leafs then be like most fans today & jump from team to team only because they're winning. Today's fans AREN'T loyal anymore, they only cheer for their teams when they are winning now.
@ckendall67 But as soon as their teams start to struggle, they drop 'em like a bad habit & move on to the next winner. They think that it's not right to stay with a team even through the bad times. Most of today's fans in sports are FRONTRUNNERS & that's a fact.
@ckendall67 The thing is, you have to be rational. I cannot support a team unconditionally especially when the board of governors dont give a damn about the team. They don't care if they win, as long as they sell out...which consistently happens almost every night. So why bother building a team? Thats the problem. Its the culture at the top. Thats what I have a problem with.
Maybe because when Gretzky wasn't playing out of his mind, Melrose's "coaching" was exposes as being wholly inadequate. Much as it was in Tampa last year. The guy's a joke. I'm ashamed that he's cousins with Wendel Clark.
O.K., I get you. But if that's the case, why is he the NHL Hockey Analyst for ESPN? Obviuosly he must have done something right to hold such a position. This s a position you would a Coach like Scotty Bowman holding. Or maybe Don Cherry if he was not doing "Hockey Night in Canada". So you see, no matter how bad of a Coach Barry Melrose was with the Kings, he must have done something right.
"But if that's the case, why is he the NHL Hockey Analyst for ESPN?"
I fucking pissed myself laughing at your comment. Its ESPN buddy. Get a clue. Melrose sucked backed then and he sucks now, case in point tampa bay: "Stamkos isn't ready to play in the NHL." LOL Great analysis Barry.
The reason why hockey was so much better in the early 90's then today is beause there were fewer Europeans back then. Canadian players play hockey the way it should. Europeans outside of maybe Ovechkin are boring to watch. They play like robots. Look at the passion in this game. You don't get that anymore.
I agree with you and I would also add, kids today are afraid to get hit and also be the one who hits!!! Their are no real heavy hitters like their used to be...
So, because there are more Europeans playing, hockey is "boring " now? Not so. Hockey is a global sport now, not just a Canadian-only sport these days.
this series was dirty, a WAR, from both teams. living in toronto at the time, I caught everything on CBC, and was fortunate to go to game seven in the gardens. They HATED each other all 7 games.
i dont think that these guys (the announcers) were saying anything that was out of line, as that is what was going on, looks like melrose told the guys (mcsorley) to go out there and take a run at gilmour most likely, but still they were so biased makes me proud to be a kings fan, bob and jim would never be so biased even though they love the kings they call it like it is
Such biased announcers--hardly a surprise, though. Strange how no one in Toronto was talking about "dirty" play earlier in the 92-93 season when Gilmour fractured Tomas Sandstrom's arm with a two-handed slash. The arm that was well healed when he used it to put the Kings ahead 3-2 in Game 2. I love the guy in pink at 2:53 giving Coach Melrose the bird. Classic!
easy there sunshine....if sandstrom drank milk as a kid he could have taken that minor slash without injury, besides....sandstrom delivered a few cheap shots of his own over his career.
btw...my favorite highlight of sandstrom getting knocked the fuck out was when dave brown drove a cross check right into that fuckers face back in '89
Sandstrom missed half that season due to the slash. Which was administered 30 seconds after Sandstrom made Jamie Macoun look REALLY bad hustling after a loose puck to avoid an icing call. I guess Sandstrom just got under the opponent's skin like that. Much in the same way he gets under yours. If it was Gilmour that got slashed like that....well....he'd be on the ice crying like a little girl. Much like he did after McSorley's hit. Sandstrom's pain threshold is LEGENDARY!
the guy with the bart is wierd. He must be a homo. Hope he found a boyfriend to do him good. real good. like a dog in the backyard. yeah, i said yeah.
