This isn't a good review. You have to actually think about the film, it's not just spelled out. Nor should it be. They miss the point of alot of things and only seem to see the surface of everything. They infer nothing for themselves. And they don't keep an open mind to things. Something that doesn't make sense on the surface makes perfect sense when you actually apply a little thought. And it helps if you watch the film more than once. It's a really great film, you should definitely watch it.
Guys, don't force your self to agree to "official" reviews or what the most ppl say. This movie was a huge crap. This one, Twilights and 300 were the only movies i really wanted to leave the cinema and ask my money back. You don't need brain to understand this movie. It's not Inception. It was horrible. No plot. Just awesome actors in a wrong place.
Oh, and I love David Lynch too, so to say the review is based on someone "not getting it" is off, in my opinion. Scriptwriting was poor at the end, plain and simple. Sorry Terry!
I love Terry Gilliam, but I think the review is right on. Why take this likeable character, right at the end, and make him immediately unikeable? He takes Valentina's virginity, marries her, then inexplicably turns *bad*. Whaaa? It seemed like the plot was missing a few pages. Beautifully shot and acted, masterfully directed, but plot was WONKY. Still worth a watch. If only they could get Don Quixote off the ground...
Still haven't seen this movie, very much want to, but........ Terry Gilliam films are indeed for the creative-minded, the people who think outside the paradigm, the people who can actually handle material without the start-point to end-point kinds of scripting. Brazil, genius. 12Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, the Fisher King..... brilliant. And to Volty down below, Lynchian films are great, especially the way he mind-fucks you. Art is not always meant to be straight forward.
This movie was absolutely FANTASTIC! I don't understand what you guys are talking about and why you found it confusing. I loved it. The storyline, the characters, the visualizations, the message. Everything was brilliant. I loved Heath Ledger in the movie and his character was great. No matter which version/actor the character was, you knew that it was the same person and the other actors did a wonderful job playing him. The entire plot flowed very well. I was impressed. Amazing movie.
Wow! Your review is small and pathetic! Sorry your little cardboard brains cant accept something different than a cookie-cutter summer blockbuster.....but hey, don't worry, Ironman 2 is coming out just for people like you. "Whatever!"
very well said, but what do u except. Not many people left who understand media like this. This movie wasn't made for the masses, it was made for the few who still use their minds.
I think you guys understood the movie's themes superficially. The plot was, in my opinion, willingly ambiguous. Clear-cut endings dissolve in a world of myths and symbol. This is a journey into man's subconscious, it is meant to leave you puzzled and intrigued. Also, your portrayal of 'the imagination vs. carnal pleasure' theme is, in my opinion, misleading.
'Carnal pleasures' are not evil in themselves; rather, they conduct man to his own inner ugliness, to mindless stupor, to an illusion that at first seems comforting, but will ultimately conclude with horror.
Thus, the antagonism is truly between Beauty and Horror, sleepiness and wakefulness.
The fact that Parnassus drinks heavily to escape his own demons shows the supreme difficulty of wakefulness, his torment is a portrayal of the suffering God, who only sees the bitterness and ugliness of a world that does not want the supreme wakefulness. He portrays the suffering of the mystic.

The goal of these reviewers seems to be to promote mediocrity among the masses.

I thought the movie was good, even though it was confusing
And it will become much clearer after you think about it more, and some of the interpritations on IMDB also help

weak review, typical for American folks who had to have everything white and black and everything between is unsolved mystery for them.
