His silence about gaza is so telling, he will not say ANYTHING against the massacre of over a 1000 civilians . He has not said one thing against Israel which is a brutal, genocidal, apartheid state, and won't in the future. If you just look at what kind of people are around him, it does not inspire confidence, he would not have put them there is they didn't reflect his policies.
Tons of fascists and warmongers, a veritible whos who of US politics is invited onto his show only to have him make a little fun of them (these are not funny topics) and not seriously challenge them. Sure he's a comedian, but to invite people like that onto your show and not challenge them is wrong.
The whole show is idiotic, they are encouraging us to laugh about things that are not funny.
Newsflash: the zionist media don't give tv shows to people who seriously expose what is going on.
True, but I stand by what I said, Jon Stewart does not go after Obama despite Obama being almost as bad as Bush. Obama's administration is full of jewish zionists and warmongers, these people are no better than the people around Bush, if you don't believe me do some research on it.
Another thing to consider is these people have a long history of controlling opposition by leading the opposition. Who gave him his job? Jews. Stewart himself is jewish and that is not his real name.
I'm a libertarian so don't get the idea that I'm saying all this because I'm a republican, not that you implied that. True fox news and much of the mainstream media was disgraceful the way they cowtowed to Bush, but now we are seeing the opposite, now MOST of the media is praising Obama to the skies, meanwhile as I said he is going to leave 90% of what Bush did in place. To think that the problem is just the republicans is simply wrong, democrats are FULLY complicit with what happened.
(However, yes it's true, the democrats are complicit, and in a few months time the situation might still be the same... but I think it's only fair to wait a few months before dishing out judgement)
I don't think it's true that you can't criticize him yet.
First of all he has taken a bunch actions that are horrible, see my comments below. Then there's the niggling little problem that there are a whole bunch of laws and policies of the Bush administration that he has shown no signs of reversing. So I guess when Bush screws us over it's bad but when Obama continues those policies it's good.
The whole tone of this debate shows that you are not really concerned with what Obama is doing.
I thought the discussion was about what he has (or rather, hasn't) done since he's president.
I believe that he will reverse most of the bush policies that he promised to reverse.
On the other hand, yes, he did indeed support and vote for a number of rubbish bills, FISA not being the least.
I still live with the small hope that he will pursue war-crime charges against bush, his administration and the whole thing will snowball to a pile of heads, leading to a new era of political accountability
"As if there was ever a time when government was accountable."
Maybe not in the US, but in the world definitely. (a LONG way back though).
"I would call them fascist."
Indeed.
If you want to talk about absolutes, of course Obama is a mainstream private-interest-backed, power-hungry immoral politician who is not the best choice to lead the country. (as if there's many politicians who aren't)
He's still a HUGE improvement over bush.
'Bit like choosing between rape and death, but still better.
On all the important issues he has been just as bad as Bush.
Civil Liberties - he is not revoking the Patriot Act, the Military Commisions Act, torture will still go on around the world, he he will keep at least 50,000 troops in Iraq while waging a heightened war against Afghanistan and Pakistan. He is belligerent to Russia just like the neocons. He will continue the bogus war on terror.
This business of voting for the lesser of 2 evils, is a very bad idea and plays right into what they wanted us to do in the first place.
When you consider how little difference there has been between any of the the candidates in the last 50 years, you realize that the game is rigged. When the ruling elites that want to enslave you give you a choice betweeen Stalin and Hitler, the rational thing to do is look for another option.

There isn't the right social climate for a revolution (and for a revolution to be effective under the current level of surveillance you need more than 10-20% of the population actively fighting.)
"There was no way an independent could have won the election"
Seeing as theres not a dimes worth of difference between the demopublicans, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by voting 3rd party. You can tell by the way they treat 3rd party candidates that it is the last thing they want, which is exactly why you should do it. Playing their game you will NEVER win.
Doing what you can, even if it only a little is the wise course.
Although Bush was a disaster for the economy, Obama will be no better, he's already OK'd the bailout, and now wants 'stimulate' the economy by taxing people more (or inflating the money supply) to pay for wasteful pork that will lengthen the depression. We already see attempts to take peoples guns, and he will not stop the completely immoral war on drugs. Also he is threatening world peace by claiming Iran is a threat when this is just a carbon copy of the propaganda put out about Iraq.

When i said "real news" in my last statement, I'm not talking about Fox or CNN. BBC is real news, in my opinion. And I shouldn't have used the word entertainment, all news is entertaining, and sometimes scary.
Jon is smart enough to realize that it's rediculous arguing over who is right in how one presents the news. Anyone should tell which one is entertainment and which one is real news. You can't make money off of anything, but conflict, comedy, and intrigue when it comes to popluar American news. The "emotional baggage" and atmosphere that the anchor brings about attracts the certain kinds of viewers that watches his or her program. Jon wins this fight in my book. You rule Jon.
Jon Stewart's "act" is little more than a critical approach to the principles of governance as stated by Niccolo Machiavelli in The Prince, published in 1513 and it's still topical !
So why can't politicians be nice and honest or be made to act and communicate honestly by the media? ...to find out read the book....you can bet Jon has !!!
yea but he does that on purpose, assuming people know that his show is comedy. he doesnt pretend that his show features real journalism. fox pretends all day long.
He's so funny and so politically charged, it's difficult not to like him, even if you disagree with him (which is hard, given how things are right now).
He has these real guests and conversations, but kind of shies away from any of the responsibility he's speaking about by saying his is just a comedy show. Don't get me wrong, I love The Daily Show and watch it all the time. But in this way, Jon is not being completely honest.
He's just not buying into the whole famous-person-as-role-model media game. He's not a political pedagogue, and his continued insistence that he is not a grand leader of a new world order does him and his show considerable credit. He's not. He's a comedian. He's not another talking head telling you what to think.
"just a comedy show" is his biggest strength and defense. He can attack anyone anyway he like and and when the opponent get angry or serious and try to get back at him he can just say "hey I'm just comedian" it's very smart.
Not denying that, but the shows aims are mainly to entertain. They don't consider themselves a news show because they're not. Is it influential and inspirational? Sure.
They did a survey recently and it showed that people who watch the daily show already know most of the stuff they talk about, if they didn't then they wouldn't get most the jokes. It's inspirational/stops us from killing ourselves over the hypocrisy of government by making us laugh at it.
Yeah I agree that the people who watch The Daily Show/The Colbert Report already know about the issues they're talking about, otherwise you wouldn't understand the jokes at all. I definitely didn't watch them as much a year ago, but now that I'm old enough to vote I'm more interested in current events and I've been watching their shows a ton more.
You're right and essentially that is why Stewart won the award he acheived. In contrast, the Daily Show is so damn funny prominently because it actually reveals reality for what it is, ridiculus. So when people watch these people who contribute to the countries growth and prosperity, it is humorus to see how insane they navigate (which is hysterical at the same time.)
What I consider real is the real guests he has on the show and the real, serious conversations he has with them. Of course there are some jokes sprinkled in to keep the kids' attention, but he does hold serious conversations on society and politics with real political and societal leaders.
Actually, i saw in an interview is that he just likes to make people laugh when he makes those people laugh! When he hears silence from the audience, something in him tells him to make a joke! It just bugs him inside! He started out as a comedian, so I understand where he's coming from!!
However, there is the hard truth that there probably are a many people for whom this is the only source of news they get due to the fact that they don't watch real news. Also, you can't have serious guests like political leaders talking about serious issues and not take some responsibility for providing serious content. To have these kinds of guests and content and try to shirk any responsibility while attacking other news media is a double standard that I think Jon avoids or ignores.
i think you're missing the point. jon stewart say his show is a comedy show, because it is. stewart takes "news" and makes fun of how fuct our system is and how people feed into it in all these perverted ways. this so called "real news" you speak of, where the hell do you get that?? what do you consider real?? in my opinion, jokes and all, stewart does a way better job and cutting the bullshit, than any other news source, which has one goal, to make money.
No I don't think that's the case. Study after study of the typical Daily Show demographic has shown that they are actually MORE aware politically because they see something on the show and it encourages them to go out and learn more, if for no other reason than to be in on the joke. I've been know to glibly say that the Daily Show is the only "news" show I watch, because my primary sources for news are print media. Stewart's sole responsibility is to make us laugh for 120 minutes per week.
Exactly...what I see on his show kind of flags the important stories of the day for me (besides the ones that show up on my comcast homepage). Then, I go and read more about them online, and look for commentary on blogs.
What do you mean, that they're over-hyped? It's probably true. It's just a little comedy show and no show like it should get so much attention from from the point of view of serious issues. Jon has stated repeatedly that they are just a comedy show and people should not turn to them for real news and information to guide them.
I remember Charlie Rose back in the early 80's on CBS in the middle of the night. Today Charlie Rose has become such a inside the beltway corporate hack. To bad.
Jon stewart is amazing. He is so knowledgeable and humble. I wish there are more people like him in regular news shows. We don't have to watch the likes of Hannity, Hume or Oreilly.
god i love him

Lets see how much Stewart talks out against Obama. The messiah is only slightly better than Bush.
voted for the bailout
wants to INCREASE military spending
said nothing against the massacre of 1000+ civilians in gaza
wants more troops in Afghanistan
voted to keep the Patriot Act
voted for FISA after he said he wouldn't (right after he won the nomination) FISA is 100% fascist legislation
voted for the resolution supporting Israel's 2006 invasion

Replace first prison sentences with rehab
Reduce sentences. (especially for crack)

"just a comedy show" is his biggest strength and defense. He can attack anyone anyway he like and and when the opponent get angry or serious and try to get back at him he can just say "hey I'm just comedian" it's very smart.
he is invincible.
nurbsenvi 4 years ago 9
So you're saying that he's just using it as a defense? It IS just a comedy show...
youvebeenthunderstru 3 years ago 2
If it is just a comedy show than it's one hell of influential one at that.
nurbsenvi 3 years ago 5
Not denying that, but the shows aims are mainly to entertain. They don't consider themselves a news show because they're not. Is it influential and inspirational? Sure.
youvebeenthunderstru 3 years ago
They did a survey recently and it showed that people who watch the daily show already know most of the stuff they talk about, if they didn't then they wouldn't get most the jokes. It's inspirational/stops us from killing ourselves over the hypocrisy of government by making us laugh at it.

That was a Pew Research study. The average Stewart/Colbert viewer is more aware of modern issues than O'Reily viewers.

The average potato is more aware of modern issues than O'Reily viewer.

But that doesn't mean that they are getting their news from Colbert or Stewart.
utubephilosopher 3 years ago

To have these kinds of guests and content and try to shirk any responsibility while attacking other news media is a double standard that I think Jon avoids or ignores.

friend-
i think you're missing the point. jon stewart say his show is a comedy show, because it is. stewart takes "news" and makes fun of how fuct our system is and how people feed into it in all these perverted ways. this so called "real news" you speak of, where the hell do you get that?? what do you consider real?? in my opinion, jokes and all, stewart does a way better job and cutting the bullshit, than any other news source, which has one goal, to make money.
phatmarley 4 years ago 5

I am probably opening up myself to all sorts but I think Democracy now! is a credible and non-partisan news provider.

Didn't anyone listen to what John said between 31:00 and 32:00? Bah, screw it: John > FSM!

knilch22: You're right -- and the best thing about these is that Viacom won't be vandalizing them. Thank you Charlie Rose.
