I used to also think the Road Warriors were modeled after the movie, until I saw their first appearances. They were dressed in biker gear with normal haircuts. They looked more like rejects from The Village People than characters from the movie. Joe Laurinaitis (Animal) started as the Road Warrior, then Hawk joined him later. There are clips on youtube.
