Very sadly, family life today is a far cry from the 50's and 60's. More than half the marriages in this country today end up in divorced. Children today are being raised in a single-parent household. There are bitter custody battles.
Both parents have to work today in order to survive. There are a lot of latchkey kids. Instead of a home-cooked meal, we're eating on the run, we're fast-food junkies, and we cook everything in the microwave.. In fact, we've become a 24/7 society.
Family life was NOT like these video's. I grew up then. We had all the same problems then that we have now. Alcoholism, spousal abuse, child abuse, drug addiciton, high school drop outs...all the same just 50 years later. It was the same all over America but it was hushed up. Now it's all right in your face and that's the way it should be. We need to move forward. It's nice to look back though. Thanks for posting this!!
@TheGroundedAviator totally agree. I do wish that I had a Mom that cared and a Dad that didn't hit the bottle every weekend but these video's sure bring be back to the good old days of home ec.
@1955JAFO You have my sympathy buddy, no one should go through that.
By the way does this happen at all eigther then or now even in a more modest way? I know it's not like this film though as it's way to fake, and the acting a joke.
The problem in the 50s was that even if the woman was being abused, she could rarely get a divorce. Even if the children were abused. However, on the flip side if the WOMAN was the abuser, the man would never get the children, even when there was substantial proof of physical abuse. Fortunately the courts are more understanding and just when it comes to substantive proof of abuse or neglect.
One of the most destructive social experiments was the introduction of No-fault Divorce, a leftist/liberal concept pioneered by the Bolsheviks following the Russian Revolution of 1917. "No-fault" divorce in the United States originated in California, effective January 1, 1970, then the other states followed until divorce was socially acceptable and intact families became a thing of the past. Very sad.
That's brilliant! "If this family were a business, it would fail". That's a good principle to apply to our families. And everyone taking responsibility instead of blaming each other. This film should be shown in the classrooms of America today.
Of course Mr. Miller was crazy with boredom, Mrs. Miller's BA in science wasn't put to any use, Harold ended up committing suicide because he was gay and had nowhere to turn, and the daughter grew up completely ignorant of anyone of color... Boy, those were the days!
people are giving thumbs down but arent really get ideheights' sarcasm. the 1950s wasn't the ideal time to live in as people like to think. ideheights made a very good point.
Thanks, Kevinch1 - you're completely right! As I reread my comment, I was clearly in a foul mood... but ever since King Arthur, we've looked back at the past thinking that it was all roses in bloom. I guess I'm tired of people saying, "l'd never have a child today, what with the world in such bad shape."
yeah. the 50s has been idealised thanks to shows like I love Lucy. I'm a history major/nerd and the 50s in America are a big interest of mine so watching these videos are pretty interesting. note the overwhelming amount of white people in all of these videos. sure it was a great time to live, but only if you were a white anglo-saxon protestant. im glad to be living in 2009. my dad always goes on about how great the 70s were but i'm much better off now than i coulda been 30+ years ago
Spoken like the true product of the 1980's that you are....and it was not I love Lucy that idealised America. It was Father Knows Best, Leave it To Beaver, and the Donna Reed Show that were the shows that had every non juvenille delinquent in the 1950's wishing that the were a member of the Anderson, Cleaver, or Stone family. By the way they are a lot of good old 1950's values that we should be practicing, like living with in our means for example. signed A True 1950's Retro Hound
@vintageappliguy I'm not saying there aren't good values to practice. I for one with people were still as polite as they used to. I hold the door for anyone behind me when I enter a building and I make sure to see if there is a person behind me. So many times I've had doors closed in my face because people are too rude to wait an extra second to hold the door. I still take off my hat inside buildings and such.
Also, my dad continually goes on about how great the 70s were since he grew up during that time. I'm sure when I have children, I will reminisce about how this past decade and the 90s were the best time to grow up. Everyone idealises their own childhood, but even though I'm always going to appreciate the decade I grew up in, I'm not going to deny that the next several decades will almost undeniably be better decades to live in. In my opinion, each decade gets better than the previous.
This is so foreign to people today because they are actually showing each other respect. They are also good principles. I sense that with the economy being what it is right now we will be seeing a return to something similar.
Maybe to be a bit more modern in your comment, let's say that we would not have the problems we do if adults put the children and the family first, and stopped mistaking material goods and foolish purchases for happiness and "raising the kids right." So much focus on things that don't matter, and no focus on the things that DO.
Another great "Coronet" educational film that correctly projected how most families would eventually disintegrate by the mid-'60s...even with "home management".
@colgatesmiley That and people are being encouraged by some churches to marry too early, before they've matured enough to know if they're really right for each other.
That was the mom's role in the family. It was also a time of chivalry and holding doors open and giving up seats for women. Yet after the Women's Movement, they expect to still get all that stuff. Doesn't work that way.
Ahhh the 40's...a time if you weren't a WASP,you where treated poorly with limited access to sports clubs and certain restaurants.

@Pafuts Because back then, it was ok for women to consume a few calories. And a skinny-wirey woman was viewed as unattractive.

Underlying the rosy sense of democracy were the two key issues.
The mother needed to organize her time, and the father needed to stop wasting (or letting others waste) his money.
These are the same two problems that still plague family life today.
