I started my own folk metal band here in Québec and I am proud to say that we use runes and other viking imagery as well as ancient celtic art with great love and admiration for our ancestral cultures. This celebration of our own heritage is a celebration of cultural heritage in general.

@maggotforlifecrisse it is only recently that northern European Paganism has been revived. Many of the symbols that Nazi Germany adopted hadn't been widly used in a thousand years (since Scandinavia was Christianized.) Tabarnak. effing Monotheism ruined everything.

some of the problems here is that movements like NSBM are using paganism to promote their shit. Pagant Front ring a bell? Sadly groups that actually want to cherish their heritage and share it can be labeled as nazis. Right now when i want to hear raw, pagan/folk, black metal its difficult to identify who are nazis and who aren't. And i think groups against this madness should stand up against nsbm or any music promoting nazism and be more active to educate and show that nazis stolen from them.

I think exactly the same. It's great that Tyr and Moonsorrow clarify all about this. NSBM is just a label for idiot extreme-right musicians that have no inspiration. When you think about it, paganism was "stolen" by nazis because they think it represents purity. But paganism is the purity of life and thought, not a racial and ethnic "preservation". Studying and knowing many other cultures can learn much more than staying with "our own history" and "our own past".

In today's world, if a black person writes songs about heritage, it's considered racial pride, but if Nordic people write songs about their heritage, they're labeled "Nazis" or "Fascists" because they're white, which in itself is a complete logical fallacy because they're PROMOTING racism by saying that!

I'd argue that the actions and words of Kratz and the BIFFF are themselves quite close to fascism in that they seek to prejudice those who are close to their heritage, who hold it dear, because of the negative connotations from the past.

The Nazi's stole the Buddhist Swastika, Tiwaz and Sowilo runes for their hate propaganda. Stupid fucks couldn't invent their own symbol and had to steal from a rich cultural heritage.
Now I can't even use Tiwaz and Sowilo runes in art or stuff without it having to be labeled as Neo-Nazism.
I hope that in the not-so-distant future, the associations of Norse Mythology with NeoNazism and White Supremacy will stop... It has to.

When I read about the Antifa and the Paganfest and looked up the lineup I laughed. I knew that there are some people who think runes are evil. The themes "protection/defense of a nation/people/culture", "pride" and "(war)heroes" have by far too often been put on the same plane as nationalism and fascism. Of course, they encourage some of the values that also fascist propaganda did, but values are meaningless without a message.
