audio has helped me get through many of the tougher books such as the hobbit by tolkein (tolkien?) and emma by austen. its not like watching a movie- it's just reading aloud the actual literature. its perfectly valid! i listened while i read along. it helped me to better absorb the story. i highly recommend this! and i disagree with those who refute the practice! some people are auditory learners rather than visual learners. nothing wrong with that.
I'm 20, and I've read about 45 in my life so far. I feel good knowing that I've read as much as I have, but like yahags implied, quality's more important. If only I had more time for books.
You've made me laugh my butt off. First, I wondered why you didn't video this without all the coughing. That just about killed me. But really? You're 27 and haven't even read 100 books? I realize that the video is four years old, but still... That's sad. I didn't start keeping track of books I've read until late last year and, while there aren't too many classics on my recently read list, I've read several thousand books over the course of my lifetime so far (I'm 27) and I average (cont)
@AlyshaDeShae (cont) at least 250 a year if not more. This year I'm aiming for 348 and I'm keeping track of them with reviews on my website. Sadly, I keep procrastinating on writing the reviews, but I'm still keeping track of what I've read so far. Audio books are cheating, in my opinion. You're getting the story, sure, and they're entertaining, but I don't count it as reading. Assuming that I read 250 books a year for the next 40 years, I'm still at 10,000 books. Compared to the number (cont)
@AlyshaDeShae (cont) of published books each year, it's not a lot, but it's a whole lot better than "six or eight thousand" in a lifetime because it doesn't take into account the books I've read in the past, only what I *will* read in the future. I watched the video hoping it would be something interesting, but instead you're just reading audio books and trying to make people feel guilty for not reading as much as you do when you barely read anything! Shame on you.
@AlyshaDeShae That's amazing! I've been reading for about 4 years, and I'm still under 100. I too, keep procrastinating. But I wish I could find more time as well. Could you give me some tips, as to reading speed and time conservation? I'm still a pretty slow reader :(
"Critique of Pure Reason" is the an absolute must. 100 books by 27? Did you not start reading until you were 23?
I also agree with the comment that 99% of the 100,000 books published each year is crap. If you are bent on Sue Graffton's crap, then go ahead and waste your time.
this guy cant think, he is stupid. face it bro, stupid people read smart write. I'm 19 and I had read most of these books (all of dandvd's list which surprise me), but im not smart, no more than the black guy who is playing basketball every day. Books are nothing, thoughts are everything. Why? Have you asked yourself why do you have to read whatever is called good book. I know, I want to be elitist, but bro you are not. Since you have eyes to see, and hands to touch you dont need these books.
And what if you died tomorrow? :) I think if you had a driving job then for sure, I'd go for audio, but other than that, I met someone who told me they also read Ulysses but in audio, I had to say thats good, but you haven't read it, big difference in discipline there than just hittin play, two different worlds entirely. Almost like saying I've read Godfather casue I watched the film? If someone has time to read but choses audio? mixing the two, hmmm, dunno, would want very good quality ones.
I'm not keen on audio stuff, it's not reading, I tried it once and found the audio voice very annoying, thing is, if your just reading for numbers, why? and whats the point? so you'd only read a few hundred in a lifetime, and? I'm happy already having read all the greatest classics i.e. Brothers Karamzov, WnP, Ulysses, Gogol, Kafka etc, takes me weeks to read these huge novels such as Don Quixote, they finnish when they finnish, no way am I rushing such a important novel to play numbers.
In my life I will read 4 books. I am 40 now and with modern medicine I will give myself another 40 years. I have read 2 books - Green eggs and ham by seuss and tv guide sept 16, 1995. I have 20 years for my next one!
Only 1,000 books! That seems like a really small number considering how many books are written each year, not to mention all the books that have been written before I was born.
Lol, you're an idiot. Don't mean to say that to get attention or put you down. Truth just hurts sometimes, and truth is that you are seriously an idiot.
in the last month ive read the 12 book Cirque Du Freak series, 6 book The Seventh Tower series, and The Night Angel trilogy of 800+ pages each. fuck youre theory, ima rule the literary world.
Forgive my pedanticism. This week I read John Eriugena's Periphyseon, Sidronius's elegies, Eucherius Lugdunensis's Contemptu Mundi, Adrianus's Galatea, and read a little from Petrus Lotichius's poetry. All of that in the original Latin, because there are no English translations. In English I re-read Nietzsche, Epictetus, Aurelius, and perused the Romans and Greeks-- I re-read some of them every week, along with a translation of Gongora's long poem about Galatea.
In addition to that I worked on my own book of aphorisms, I usually coin two or three aphorisms a day, maybe twenty on a good week. I generally read one book every day or two depending on the size and my enthusiasm that week. I understand not everyone can do that, but I am what they call a learned bum, and have twenty four hours every day to spare. At least I don't spend all that time popping pills. But when I do have pills to pop, just watch out! I can read two or three books a day then!
I didn't believe you at first. I had to do the math myself. You are right, I probably will not read more than 4500 books in my lifetime. That is really depressing. I have read about 75 books this year. I am going for the 100 book/year thing starting next year. I tend to gravitate toward the biography/memoir genre these days. However, I still love Philosophy, European History, Psychology, Math & Science, and the Classics.
Favorite Book: Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barberry
It is interesting -- 2000 books in 40 years. It is important to remember that if you watch great movies, associated with brilliant people, don't waste time with losers and listen to intellectual tapes -- I think you will have plenty of time. And to know everything in the world is impossible. I think that is a bad goal to set. To be very great a something is better than to be half-great in a lot of things.
This video actually inspired me!!! I want to try to read more than 4000 books in my lifetime!!! I might not accomplish it but i ca give it a heck of a try. I read very fast!! I can read a 100 page book in 15 mintues flat!! I would like to see someone beat that!
It would take you 20 years to reach that amount if you read 4 books a week. 80 years if you read 1 book a week. You are never going to reach 4,000. Sorry.
This video has really made me think and as i'm bored stiff now i have counted up all the books i can think of that i have read and i have read 107(they are not under 100, many are 400 pages long as an adverage) i think this is quite good as i can't recall all the books i have ever read and i'm only 14!
thanks for sharing your worries with us. It is quite encouraging. I have actually borrowed so many books in the library and I am su´ch a curious person by nature, only if there wasn't uni that distracted me from reading what I want. However it is quite good that I study English including English literature :)
I've read about 220 books, some in Norwegian and some in English. I haven't actually planned how many books I'll read, I guess I'll figure that out when I'm done:P
I'm only 15 years old, so hopefully I have plenty of years to read more.
Books I plan on reading: Political: - The Machinery of Freedom - The Freedom Outlaws Handbook - The Betrayal of the American Right - The Costs of War Fiction: - Dune Messiah (currently reading) - Children of Dune - The Fountainhead - Earth Abides Informational: - The World Without Us - You & The Police
I'm at about 1,600 books now, as a decent estimate.... and I'm pretty much officially burn out. As of several years ago, I've had a tough time concenrating on reading anhing and I have force myself to read whereas I acually used to enjoy it. Is like a mental block.
My goal is about 3,000 books and then I'm calling it quits. Theres really nothing I can do wih this knowledge as far as marketabiliy, so I dont really so the point anymore.
The numbers may sound depressing. But there are two dynamics at play. 1.99% is crap. 2.Much of what is good is redundant or will eventually be summarized in another work more concisely.
cropperb, apply the "99% of everything is crap" rule. Here are some books the video recommends: Why Businessmen need Philosophy Aristotle's Ethics Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire George Orwell - 1984 Inventing a Nation Dante's Divine Comedy Fyodor Dostoevsky in 90 minutes The Objectivity of Math Crime and Punishment Shakespeare - The Tempest Ayn Rand - Fountainhead Alexandre Dumas - Count of Monte Cristo Sir Walter Scott - Ivanhoe
But my selections are not a random sample from the culture. My selections are much better than 1% meaningful. Thanks for listing the above, though! It makes it easier to get a quick sample of what I'm advocating.
Totally agree. I made the comment about 1% of everything being meaningful with regards to your mentioning of 100k books/year. Only 1000 are not crap, so the issue of absorbing the word's literature in your lifetime is still open.
