wow.. Natalie dessay's rendition to this aria sounds "hungry" in comparison to this one.. But I still like both. Just comes to show that roles can be expressed in so many ways and still be good.
@alexandriusgirl If you are referring to Dessay's recording with Louis Langree on her CD Mozart Heroines, I have that CD and have been playing each one after the other. I don't know what "hungry" means but I think Gruberova's tone quality is generally richer. On the whole I like Natalie's coloratura technique better, and like some of the things Gruberova does better, but overall prefer Natalie's. Of course I'm a big Dessay fan and hers was a studio recording. Natalie is a Gruberova fan BTW.
Yeah, I had to repeat the section from 6:58-7:01 to make sure I hadn't just made up the perfection in my head. This is unreal singing. No one else sings it this well at ALL. She's in a class above.
She was in absolute unbelieve voice during this period. Which other singer can sing this difficult aria like this? She never breathes where others need 3 or more. She simply palys with the coloratuyra. With this she really set an unbelievable standard. All others simply sound inadequate after listening to this. During this concert she also sung Zerbinetta and more difficult aria which where all delivered at this amazingly high standard. One of the top sopranos of our time surely!
Wow, she sounds way better here than in the Harnoncourt Lucio Silla recording. Fantastic! That cadenza was literally (one-)breathtaking. This is a perfect performance of this formidable aria except for a minor glitch (around 5:16,7); it made me suddenly realize she actually is a human being!
This is the sort of singing that causes one to reappraise one's view of eighteenth century vocal prowess. The very fact Mozart could imagine such a minefield of technical detail would indicate it existed around him. The singing on this video is the essence of artistry.
Thanks. I watched the video again and I couldn't help thinking how Mozart must have composed this aria with a certain wry grin on his face. The other detail I missed before was how (almost) nonchalant the conductor appears while Gruberova is negotiating some of those most difficult terrain of the repertoire.
A time machine...that's interesting. My guess is that composers from the past did exactly the same as composers of the present day: they knew of what their singers, orchestras, ensembles etc were capable and wrote accordingly (including where to grab a breath!). I dare say great composers always raise the bar a bit higher though.
@vexme2 Indeed. The child Mozart wrote that he loved it "daß die aria einem sänger so accurat angemessen sey, wie ein gutgemachts kleid." He truly must have had a great selection of singers if such a "minefield of technical detail" could fit anyone so well.
It's not commercially available which is a REAL shame. It's an incredible evening of singing. It wouldn't surprise me if it will become available in the future.
Simply AWESOME!

Ecoutez Battistini, Lili Lehmann, Sigrid Onegin...

she does, and that is one kick ass recording. the tone sounds fuller here and the coloratura is just as impressive.

My wish for a time machine is to hear the singers that Mozart created these roles/arias for and also Bach's singers...when ever did they breathe?
