I have a question regarding the 1911 style pistol. I was told that the proper way to grip a 1911 is with the strong hand thumb resting on top of the thumb safety. I am finding that really uncomfortable so i have switched to the thumb under safety. Here's my issue, i was told from fellow shooters that if i grip the 1911 like that i could accidentally hit the safety on which could be fatal in some situations (self defense). Any advice or is a 1911 just not for me?
Thanks for the support. Since that video was made I've improved dramatically. I own a Glock 19 now and I'm loving it. Been working for Spike's Tactical and enjoying AR15s galore. I never thought shooting would be something i'd be doing in the long term a year ago...but now I'm broke cause I keep buying new guns :P
For all you educated commenters thanks. For all you negative ones...just keep to yourself please.
Dammmn!!!! ... your using the old man .45 i hate that thing but not you, you is my hero dude, Wish i could shake your hand. Heckler and Koch Owns .45s baby!!!
The "old mans .45" is the only one asshole! Bloodbath, stick to video games and leave that HK where it belongs, in the nice little pretty box it came in. There is NO substitute for a 1911, and NO, HK does not own anything, Colt does!!!!
LoL! Whats wrong with loving guns and games old timer? The 1911 is a piece of shit.(Its Served its purpose long enough)... Don't get me wrong i own both a HK and 1911 . The 1911 has small parts breaking all the time and most people that use them in ranges have only customized versions for obvious reasons. HK is by far much better, Even the compact HK 45 rapes the Senile 1911 Hands Down Baby!! You sound just like those Halo 3 Fags Gears Of War Owns!
I have no idea what halo and war gears are, however, I was shooting a 1911 when you were still a twinkle in your fathers eye. HK builds great weapons!!! No doubt! But, they DO NOT "own" a Colt 1911! You say that the 1911 served its time, that time you are referring to was over 70 years! Still today, SF are using the 1911 over your beloved HK. Sorry, but I don't think I will be changing my mind about which one is better just because of your misguided and obviously juvenile opinion.
Yes 1911 = long service. greatest .45 of all time not the best out there today. among other things the capacity is not be ignored 7+1 Cocked and locked Smart, Decocking with live ammo(hell no)...hell give me a juvenile Glock 21 (13+1 .45s) even a sig. im not surprised that special forces carry the 1911 more today. the thinner profile which can fit most hands and comfortable for extended use. weight(good for accurate rapidfire) great with Adv.training nothing less. LoL Liked that Twinkle Thing!
LOL.!.!. you seem to prove my point. Capacity, yes only 7+1. Decocking, no need it should be carried cocked and locked always (safer than a glock) So your point is that an HK is better because: 1. carries more per mag, 2. wider grip that is more UNcomfortable for extended use, 3. TOO light for accurate rapid fire! I could not agree more! Other than mag capacity, the HK has nothing on the Colt, those are your words. I hardly would say the HK "owns" a 1911!
Yeah its Clunky baby!!! so thats its big draw back i admit that, 1911 has quite a bit of advatages by being thinner and made of all steel parts. i dont have small hands and find the HKs Quite Comfy. i prove your point that your gun is overall quite great(Also is way more available). HK = Extremely accurate(Grouping that will make you drool), good ergonomics, great mag capacity for a .45
Better Gun(Not History Wise)...i will never use a 1911 over an HK Baby!
I think we all have to remember that without Colt's 1911 design, the world of firearms would be a lot different. A lot of designs are still based on the 1911. It might be "old" but shoot, we should give it credit for what it is.
I could not agree more, except it was actually the great John Browning's design. He designed the 1911 and it has been the basis that almost all autos have been modeled after. Colt was the manufacturer and then obtained the patent. A great testament to his ingenuity!!!
LOl yeh i realized my little error now that im reading over my comment. Thanks for the correction. John Browning not Colt. I'm gonna get to shoot a Hi-power soon too, so that should be a treat and another testament to browning's ingenuity.
i dont think they got the patent because many manufactures make the 1911s thats why its sooo unique but a colt 1911 is refered to be the true 1911 but correct me if im wrong.
actually i don't favor to the 1911 its a great firearm but America thinks it's cool because it's a .45 75 percent of americans think they need a huge big powerful handgun i respect the right to have that big powerful handgun but we aren't satisfied with hardly any caliber anymore it doesn't have enough "stopping power" 50 years ago police in los Angeles were using .38 specials and made it by just fine now police in small hick towns use 15 round Glocks I'd just rather stick to a revolver
I passed with a 249 for ny CHL. I used to hear that they were not accurate guns, I proved that to be wrong. I was 1 point away from expert/perfect. My buddies had 9 mils, glocks etc... They scored 241-246. So that tells you its all on the shooters' techniques.
FYI If you keep you elbows at head level and you dont lock them up, you'll feel less recoil. Have you're hands at shoulder width, an lean sligtly on you're left leg.
For tactical shooting, you NEED to lock your elbows. It makes for faster follor ups and double taps. If you are uncomfortable with recoil, go to a smaller round like .40SW or 9mm. Punisher, no criticism intended, however, if you are just punching holes in paper, shoot however you want. For self defense, those follow ups are necessary.
Everyone shoots for the first time at one point crazychink. Focus on getting rounds on target first then start trying to group tighter. As you do that try to speed up. After a little of practice you will be VERY good. Most people shoot with no thought of anything but "throwing lead downrange". Think when you shoot and you will do fine. Nice vid!
I just shot a 1911 a few hours ago that was made in 1918. Went through WWI, WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam. Quality fire arm, worked perfectly after almost 90 years of use. Amazing.
Yep it definately is an amazing piece of engineering. I got to shoot it some more recently, and its still the most accurate pistol I've shot so far. So far I've shot the Glock 19 and Sig P226. Although both are 9mm, the 1911 still was the most accurate and most comfortable handgun out of the 3.
Ok I finally decided to post what kind of gun it is. Its from Para Ordnance, PXT LDA series, which are pistols based on the Colt .45 1911. Yes, technically not a Colt, but it is a .45, and a "1911"
Come on guys.... of course that was a 1911. Looked like maybe a 4 incher though. But seriously, saying a modern 1911 like a Kimber, Springfield, Wilson or what have you isn't a 1911 because it's not an original is like saying a modern AR-15 isn't an AR-15 just because it doesn't follow Eugene Stoner's original specs.
I mean I understand where some of you guys are coming from (I'm a 1911 fanatic myself), and I wish modern manufacturers wouldn't stray so far from original factory ordnance specs, but let's be reasonable. I mean come on, are you saying that if I put a full length guide rod in a GI 1911 it is no longer a 1911? That's a bit of a stretch.
And for the sake of info, let's remember that the 1911 was the brain child of John BROWNING, who only licensed his design to Colt. And although Colt was the majority producer of 1911's during WWI, Remington-Rand actually produced more 1911A1's during WWII than ANY other company, and they were being turned out by everyone up to and including the Singer Sewing Machine Company. So even an original GI 1911 doesn't have to be a Colt to be an authentic GI 1911.
Oh, and crazychink, if the recoil on the 1911 seemed a little stout, try riding your thumb up over the thumb safety. It will sit the bore axis of the pistol lower in your hand and will reduce felt recoil and muzzle jump.
It is a remake of the Colt .45 1911. Although I'm not sure who remade it since it is not my gun. I was just trying to enjoy my first time shooting guys...not to get bombarded with questions and to have you guys arguing through comments lol
Let me tell you, it might be a 1911 based frame, but it was most certainly not an original 1911 (or remake of one). It looks more like an H&K or a Sig P220. Why don't you tell us who the manufacture is. There is a difference between a custom .45 and a 1911.
Find your grandfather, or father, who has a 1911 Colt or Springfield, etc. Pull The action back and lock it back using the slide lock. Follow so far? Now, look at the gun. Is there anything protruding from the slide other than the barrel? If no, then you have a 1911 style gun, if so you have a .45 whatever, not a 1911. One other good indication is who made it, to which he did not respond. Thanks.
That thing protruding from underneath the barrel is called a recoil spring guide. It's an accessory I don't like myself, nor does it really make a difference, but there are on some 1911s.
Not on a 1911 or remake of such. If you know of one, let me know. Kimbers and others have them to improve performance. (or so they say) That makes them a custom .45. they have as much in common with a 1911 .45 as an M1 Garand has with a 1903 Springfield. If you have a 1911, or one based and modeled as such, label it so. If not, call it what it is, otherwise everyone with a .45 will call it a 1911 and then its no better than the "Kleenex"
There is no doubt that it is a variation of the original Colt 1911 design, but is that the only point you were attempting to argue? You must be the type of person who corrects the person when they ask for a Kleenex instead of a tissue... or Vaseline instead of petroleum jelly.
Another angle... Take an original Colt 1911. Add extended thumb safety, high beaver tail, flat mainspring housing, slide serrations, and a recoil spring guide. Are you still going to tell me it's a 1911?
My initial point was that it is not a 1911. As my post from a day ago said it may be a customized Kimber or something. However, to answer your question, no, its not a 1911. It is a modified (in your example) Colt M1911-A1. Label it as such, its that simple. It may be as you said a variation of a 1911, but it is not a 1911. Thanks.
By the way, I know a 1903 is a bolt action, I have one, I used that as an example of how two things could be totally different. Also, it is facial tissue, not a Kleenex. J.K. Thanks for the convo. By the way, if you are into AR15's there is a great video under that search.
That was not a 1911! It looked more like a HK or Sig. Also, man if you plan on using that thing in defense you need alot of practice. I suggest you get a real 1911, and shoot at milk jugs, without your girlfriend to make you nervous. Try aiming correctly and take a solid stance, then squeeze the trigger. Good luck.

smokinC5 4 years ago
That's ludicrous - it IS a 1911 based pistol. 1911 is simple a designation based on the original Colt design.
HK does not make 1911 copies... and the Sig Sauer P220 looks nothing like a model 1911...
So tell me. What's a real 1911 to you?
ei9htzer0 4 years ago
Find your grandfather, or father, who has a 1911 Colt or Springfield, etc. Pull The action back and lock it back using the slide lock. Follow so far? Now, look at the gun. Is there anything protruding from the slide other than the barrel? If no, then you have a 1911 style gun, if so you have a .45 whatever, not a 1911.
