Of course, we need to remember that there are two possibilities for a northern direction at any one time. (depending on how you move the board, the shadow can touch the line in two places; namely two spots equally far from the center on both the western and eastern half) so let's just remember that from morning till noon the shadow has to touch the line on the western half and from noon till sunset it has to touch the line on the eastern half.
sorry if i hurt your feelings,it wasn't meant to be malicious or nit picky but i do think that if it was a real survival situation and if that is the only way you plan on judging what is safe to eat,i do think there is a very good chance it would end badly.I really meant what i said that i hope you look into other means of getting food.
First off, I was taking up for corellmekageme who you were ridiculing for his statement. estaban215 gave critisizim with belittling him. Secondly I know the edibles in the areas I camp and hike. How about instead of critizing be constructive and give helpful advise. And lastly I apologize for calling you an Ass.
if all this is giving is a rough estimate why not remember that the sun rises in the eastish and sets in the westish. may save time and keep your saw sharp for something more important. i beliece surviving in the wilderness is common sense. if the animals eat it you eat it. hide from danger. dont panic.
You can't rely on animals eating a plant to determine if it is okay for humans to eat. Many plants that animal use for food are toxic to humans
Example: PokeWeed
Many bird species and other animals eat the berries and leaves with no ill effects but the berries and mature plant is toxic to humans Even the young plant is toxic but can be made edible if prepared correctly
The best thing to do is learn the plants and learn their uses. Also learn navigation and other techniques before needing them
i should have clarified. if the animal is like you in body then it is probably safe to eat what they eat. of course you wouldn't pointlessly stuff your face with just a couple things you've seen a couple of mammals eat. if you are in such a situation then you must know that you wont die immediately from taking in 1/3rd the usual calories. no need to be stupid and panic.
we are animals with instincts and if we are calm we hear them. spend some time alone it the brush and just watch, walk around and see what there is to see. lightly test some things against the skin wait, the lips wait, in the mouth wait, eat a tiny bit wait, and if your truly unsure boil or cook it first. then you'll know if it can go through you. that seems like common sense to me.
Im 14 and love Survival techns. but I dont know where to go when Im about 18 or 19 to put my skills to use, I just bought a usrvival knife with mathces a compass a harpoon and all that I also bot a magnesium fire starter. But do you have any tips on where to go? I want to put my self in a survival situation (with proper emergency gear)and hunt animals and build a shelter using cut down trees. what would you suggest me doing? Im going to practice at my mom (theres woods behind her house.)
Serious though, it's great to have this on YT for posterity. Too quickly do we lose this hard earned wisdom with the advent of press-button technology's veneer of civilisation. Please keep it coming.
Using just the needle in your first aid kit and the silk from your parachute or wherever (use your imagination) you can make your own compass by rubbing the needle 50-100 times and floating it in a cup of water. Use you own oil (hair or skin oils work) to coat the needle. Stroke to the point of the needle. This will point south in the northern hemisphere and north in the southern. Remember mountains and large iron ore deposits can affect any compass. Migratory birds are another helpful hint.
There is a slighly easier way to tell your bearing by the sun if you have a watch. In the northern hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun and bisect the angle between this bearing and where 12 o'clock is. There's your north. Maybe even quicker too. Reverse this for the southern hemisphere. Warning. Do not try this with LED watches or heavy grandfather clocks.
Roger that, we show it in the video too. If you have an LED watch just draw the watch face on a piece of paper, bark etc with the correct time indicated and the watch/time method still works. You can also use a radio with local time to give directions.
I agree with that grandfather clock! Mine is only correct twice a day.
I have heard that but I have also seen many trees were the moss grows all the way arround the tree, Thanks for the advise though, if you or anyone else has any methods please post them

It is often times overcast were I live, I know tons of ways to find north with the sun or stars, but not many reliable ways to find north without using the sun, if you have any good ways to find north without the sun (other than a compass) please tell me

Nit-picking a poor guy's comment and calling him a deadman that really helps give him constructive advice.

I mean watch the birds, don't ask them for directions... they have a wierd sense of humour and often lie.

thank you, meanwhile I found the second part
of the ottomani sun compass...

still I don´t know in which distance
the east-west line has to be drawn...
truthspeaker2000 3 years ago
OSC is calibrated by aligning the sides on a East-West Line.
Once aligned, the Line is drawn there where the shadow-point casts.
For accurate East-West-Line Determination watch Noon Determination with Stick Shadow technique:
