I've seen this glitch happen when I spammed Mini-nuke shots into the area for the fun of it, killing the thug the gun belonged to. If you proceed later in the level after the armour vendor to where two heavy thugs are playing Rock, paper and scissors, you can replicate this by blasting one of the thugs off the top of the ledge.

Lol, I remember the gun glitch happening. I thought it was because I did the Insomniac Museum glitch on the same planet. I was like "What gun is that?!"
