What happened to Patty Loveless? She was with the "new" country wave in the early - mid 90s... and then kind of disappeared. Good to hear her again... what a voice.
Check out another great Pike County, KY legend, Molly O'Day (LaVerne Williamson Davis) singing "Poor Ellen Smith". She recorded a number of songs written by Hank Williams, Sr. and had one of the most powerful voices in Country and Bluegrass Music. Left the business at the height of her career. She is in the KY and WV Music Halls of Fame and belongs in the Country Music Hall as well (she is referenced on the plaque to Hank Williams).
@lilredsammy Patty Ramey would be the first to tell you there was another legendary singer from Pike County and most likely one of her relatives, LaVerne Williamson Davis, better known as Molly O'Day and an influence on just about every singer from those parts including Patty and her cousin Loretta Webb Lynn, Dolly Parton, Trisha Yearwood, Tammy Wynette... and artists from other styles. She will long be remembered by Ralph, bluegrass and country, another Pike county great...
The finest woman singer alive, singing with the Dr. Not a slag in Trashville can carry this girl's mic to the stage for her, and this is live, no canning, no overdubs, what you see and hear is what you get, isn't this band something? Simply put, all the wanna bes in Trashville just wish they could sing half this good, and so do we.
@PoorMansPlato so what--who cares about if the are a dem or a rebub. music is meant to unite people--it is not like these musicians are running for office. if you don't care for ralph just because he likes obama--i guess he has enough fans that he could lose a couple. at his age--i don't think he cares what you think. and neither do i
@1pupblacky Bluegrass is the music of mountain folk. Appalachia is the home of Mountain Folk, supporting any politician who calls us Gun toting Bible thumping rednecks is anti-Appalachia! and then there's that anti-coal agenda. Stick you head in the sand if you wish, that just leaves you RUMP in the AIR!
@PoorMansPlato i am a dem and have plenty of guns in my home. for you to insult a musician because he voted dem is just plain ignorant. and i never even mentioned the anti-coal agenda. for anyone who abides by blowing off mountain tops is just plain selfish--without looking at your profile--i bet you come from wv. yeah you make lots of money--but at what cost. streams you can no longer fish in. mountains where trees will not grow. i would think you would appreciate nature more than that.
Not easy to sing like that when you got some years on you....the man must do his vocal exercises! She IS gorgeous and sounds devine. As a vocalist who is more familiar with blues based melodies, it's fascinating to me to hear/recognize the passing tone notes that are either left out or included so that these melodies sound something specifically other than blues based....it could be as simple as a major third instead of a minor third
Sit down Taylor and listen to the finest, and best sounding female voice alive, sorry little girl, you couldn't carry Patty's mic out to the stage for her. This ladies and gentlemen is how a female COUNTRY singer is supposed to sound, like she came out of the hills of Eastern KY, wait she did, so listen boys and girls to how music should be played and sung!
@countrycrabber I seen them in a different show at the Rhyman and she told a story of The Clinch Mountian Boyz coming to Eastern KY for a show and Ralph hooked up with her Aunt. Btw her Aunt said The DR Ralph was the best.
One thing I notice about Patty when she sings duets with others is that she watches the other singers almost the whole time, and will watch the others mouth at critical times. She also backs away from the mike when she has to belt out a word so as not to overpower the other singer. Marks of a true professional, and a generous singer. Many others could take lessons from her.
I' am glad that there bringin back the old timey bluegrass back . My wife and,I with our daughter Kailyn took my mom and dad to a bluegrass festival back in 2,007 in prescott Arizona. I learning the banjo my self . The banjo bluegrass sound.
Hmph, knew a man that crazy....Never did follow his ass anywhere! Ladies, listen to this song and take warning. He can be a fine looking young man but in the end HE COULD BE YOUR END! Polly, don't trust Willie!
Except Willie O'Winsbury, who won the love of the king's daughter, refuses the crown and "made her the Lady of as much land as she can ride in a long summers day." Great song.
@xxbingo This is NOT rap though...it is mountain music...a plain and simple story of some tragic thing that happened...it has no swears, sexual lyrics, etc. The lyrics do not condone nor glorify murder.
@pixie61pants I agree completely. If anything, it is a precautionary tale. I remember hearing it when I was very small growing up in Eastern Kentucky. Bluegrass and Bluegrass Gospel was always in the air. When I heard it, what I took away from it was the immorality and foolishness of Polly following Willy who knows where to do who knows what in secret. As a culture, we need precautionary tales, so that we can learn from them.

I like the Byrds. But that era of pretend country that they and guys like gram parsons were doing was straight out awful. All that pretend twang in their voices makes me shudder to this day. We had the real stuff and they were doing lame country impressions.
@DinoMack1 You R a jack ass. You know nothing about Patty Loveless or bluegrass with such a ridiculous comment. Go back and listen to your Taylor Swift. I challenge any top countrysinger on the charts today to try to do what Patty does.
@glencoe6305 James Price is the fiddler. He nails it !! If you want to hear a great young fiddler, search Andy Leftwich or Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder and hit on the song "I'm Ready"
Best version, by far, is done by the Byrds (believe it or not) from their groundbreaking bluegrass-rock album 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo' in 1968. It is a very spare, intense rendition with Jim/Roger Mcguinn singing an other-worldly lead, accompanying himself with hypnotic playing from his electric 12-string guitar. This Loveless/Stanley version is all wrong --- it sounds joyous and it shouldn't be. After all, Polly is stabbed to death by Willie.
@reddragonready It's "all wrong" for me because after listening to this one has no clue that it is about a young woman who was deceived, stabbed to death, and buried in the middle of nowhere. The Byrds/McGuinn version is dark, foreboding and hypnotic --- appropriate for a tragedy. Loveless and Stanley are certainly more entertaining and listenable but this is an Appalachian death ballad. Listen to the 1930's recording on YouTube by the Coon Creek Girls to hear an authentic version of this.
I truly love Patty Loveless. Beautiful woman and beautiful voice. As for Ralph it's so good to see him reap the benefits of a lifetime of great music. A true legend.

@taddyd1 Great comment, my friend. Is that so? Yes, I remember: Joan Baez did a lot of singing with the "black-listed" Pete Seeger, did she not? She must be brave to risk being "Dixie-chicked." If you are a country singer, you are probably liberal. So, you have no freedom of speech -- or your audience will burn your CDs like the 'witches' during the Inquisition. I'd rather be anybody than a country singer....

Sure wish these two would do an album together. I love Patty and the radio stations here in Toledo won't play her. No they want to pass off that half rock crap as country. Give me this PURE mountain music anytime. I have seen Ralph twice and he is just the most humble man, talk to all his fan and let you take pictures with him. Great guy!

@reddragonready It's "all wrong" for me because after listening to this one has no clue that it is about a young woman who was deceived, stabbed to death, and buried in the middle of nowhere. Great guy!

@horrorbaraz This! is the way it is supposed to be. Not some heroin tinged version. But, to each his own though... I guess? This is the real thing.

Fantastic. I can listen to this over & over. The best hard-drivin' Bluegrass version of Pretty Polly you'll ever hear.
