This film is all about one word...redemption....I loathed my father...he was a boxer in his youth hbefore I was born and very successful..all I saw was an old man...and we fought and argued very day until he died....this film cut me to pieces because I realised that the message was universal.......it says what we all think...'if we could build it he would come back to us as we would want'...it is the greatest man flick ever and those that think not are simply in denial
No Man... there is no redemption. I was so crying looking at the conclusion of this movie. Coz I was not imagining discussing with my father that way. I've been so sad, missing love while I was young... I have kids now, and I try to give them everything I can. That's just the way it is, the way I see it : give now the more you can.
Your words are beautiful anyway, and so happy you can be.
Don't be sad.. perhaps you are building now something that makes him come back, but the things we are building and who must come back could be different. Your redemption is perhaps just into the things you are doing for your kids, the way you love them.
Any one who ever means anything to you has an effect on your life who you are and how you act. You will always carry a piece of that person with you in your heart. A person is never gone until they are forgotten. Never forget and they will always be with you. Remember the good times forget the bad. There is nothing wrong with living in a dream world at least once in a while. If that is what makes you happy do it.
It's true, it's not a movie about baseball. It's the movie about the dream that many of us have in our hearts, to meet our fathers again. Ten years are gone, but i feel still my fathers died strong hand in mine. I think i know what the movie mean to say... Hey dad, do you want to have a catch?
I was afraid, but i was at his side when he went. His old and strong farmers hand takes mine in the moments but I wasn't able to say "dad, i love you, please don't go" that was exactly what i was thinking. So don't be afraid about that moment, be afraid to be unable to say what you feel for him, forgive their mistakes and thanks for what they gave...
It reminds me of all the wonderful times I shared with my loving father. I still miss him and know my son would have loved his grandfather who unfortunately never got to meet. This hever fails to bring a tear to my eye, and thats very rare.
i think you really have to be into baseball to drop a tear in this movie. im from germany... baseball is not popular at all over here. i think this movie is ok. but i didnt shed a single tear while watching. i dont know any of those players nor can i get myself emotionally attached to that story. weird.
That's cool. The movie really isn't about baseball, it just uses baseball as a vehicle to tell the story. It's more about fathers and sons and those relationships. In the US, fathers and sons always play catch and always play baseball....so I guess if you can imagine that emotion, applied to what is important to you, it's easier to understand why the scene is so strong for American men.
Here's a movie that shows you what movies can be. Sometimes hollywood gets it right. Hollywood should be about dreams and not (only) about money.
'is this heaven?' ...Well, I think that this scene is better than any heaven that might exist. It's the magic of filmmaking at it's best. The music, the acting, the writing, it's all pure. It's the ideal heaven for me. Thank you for existing.
i have never played or watched baseball & never had a catch but this is beautiful & eternal - I lost my dad just before I watched this & i wept buckets
I saw this movie a year after my Dad died and it was so touching to me when you stop and think of your regrets and what you didn't do with a parent. This movie is so much more than baseball; it's spiritual and kind of a reincarnation kind of feeling. It is everyone's dream to have someone you have loved that has passed come back to relive things and let you say things you didn't get to the first time around. This is one of my favorite movies and casts that was very well done.
Hey Guy, You said it , there is nothing like laughing and breaking each others balls while having a catch. Do me a favor if you don't mind if your Dad is still around and you are close give him a hug and tell him you love him..... I give anything to be able to tell my Dad that just one more time....
Anytime I watch anything pertaining to Field of Dreams,I find myself thinking of my Dad and how we used to have catches out front, to watching the Red Sox on tv over the years had alot of memories together, we saw our fair share of dissapointment, the only regret i'll always have is that he never got the chance to see the Red Sox win the world series,my son and I did I guess thats the closes it we'll be for now. Love You and miss you dearly your son Kevin
Awh, this was nice! I used to play "500" with my dad when we were kids. Now because of a stroke all we can do is play cards. I taught "500" to my kids, and my grand-daughter has a plastic bat and ball so soon she and her dad will play in their back yard. If you have kids, stop what you're doing, (it's really not important), and go outside and play catch with them.
I was never able to reach my Dad. I am still not. I want him to see this movie and know that I love him. He wasn't there when I was a kid. He was a business man. My best friends Dad was a dad to me He died a month ago. I wish I did have this kind of relationship with him. Just one thing in common. He is 80. I showed him this movie and he didn't get it. I am afraid i won't know what to say until it is too late. He doen't know how much his boy needed one word of encouragement from his son.
My father passed away when I was 10 months old. I never knew him. I understand your wanting the relationship with your father that you never had, but I also think that you might want to re-evaluate the now. Ray did all the things, built the field, put up with doubt, to reach out TO his Dad, not wait for him to reach him. Not wait for him to change. Ray changed. George, "Build it and he will come." Find that common ground with your Dad. Meet HIS field before it is too late.
Ok I will admit it.....I had tears in my eyes also. This scene shows all of us what is really important in life. I remember playng catch with my dad that thouoght along with "maybe this IS heaven" is what got to me.
i just saw this movie on TV, haven t seen it since i saw it in the theatres when I was young, I did everything in my power not to cry at the end, but when costner said "hey dad" I EXPLODED into tears. Had to come here and see that I was not alone on this matter but reading all these comments left here assures me that I am not
Truley one of the greatest scenes in movie history.
I love when Ray introduces his dad for the first time, saying, "this is my......this is john". And his dad says, "hiya karen" and then looks at John. He knew right away Ray was his son.
Whenever I asked my father who his favorite baseball player was, without hesitation he would always look at me and simply say, "You." When I was younger I didn't really understand that very well, but now I do.
I love you dad and I'm glad we still get to share moments like this.
Another tear-jerker in a Costner baseball movie is when he faces his old friend in "For Love of the Game." When the sentimental music cues along with the moving to NY scene kind of gets me to choke up a little.
I think the thing that makes this scene so amazing is when he looks around, at his family, his home, his land, and concedes that maybe it is in fact heaven.
Its not even about the baseball really. Its about his guilt of the last memory of his father and him. He fought him the last time he saw him. Thats why people in the movie don't see the ghosts until the people feel his guilt. Haha it really makes you think of all the bad stuff you have ever said to your dad even though he was always there for you.
What is it about this scene??... it seems almost universal.....it touches a cord in every man....and his realtionship with his father...someone , you will never fully know because of the generation gap..........this scene taps into something poweful......I criied my eyes out!!...as did most of my friends,,,,,,,Amazing
I played this exact clip at my fathers funeral. It will always remind me of him and our 'baseball chats'. It's so tough to watch without crying. Fantastic movie and fitting for my fathers good bye.
this movie is just so amazing. it is the only movie that can keep making me cry. i am so blessed to have shared such an amazing game as baseball with my father. a love we both still share. i still talk to him about baseball every single day, even though it's hard while trying to be a college student as well. this movie means so much. i have had so many great memories with baseball and my dad.
At 4:28 they have every freaking light in the house on. At 5:54, they turn on about 10,000 watts of floodlamps. And at 6:13, what appears to be several hundred gas guzzlers drive in. Not to mention they plowed under several acres of ethanol-producing corn to create the field.
All of which goes to prove that Al Gore must have hated his father.
I don't know where to start. I'm a 42 year old guy, married with two kids. I lost my dad this summer to cancer . . . man do I miss him. He coached my little league team and was an incredible friend. In later years, we bonded over golf. What I would do to have one more game of catch.
Hey lobwdg, I know exactly what you mean. I lost my precious Dad 5 yrs ago to cancer and i still have a big empty spot in my heart which cannot be filled. He was a great Dad,friend and protector. Me and my brothers were truly blessed to have him in this life. The memory of him helps me get through tough times.
Well like many stuff has happened between my Dad and I. I love the guy and tried to show him this movie. He didn't get it but I think it is more about forgiveness for being a stupid kid and saying something you don't mean and trying to find forgiveness for it and building a relationship. My Dad was in business and didn't have time for me. He does now and we do get along. It is cool that Ray had the chance to say what many can't. I like how he said "Hey Dad" and then he turned around. That got me
Gawd, all the memories of playing catch with my dad come rushing back when I see this. I'd give anything to toss that ball with him one more time. What an awesome, touching, heartfelt scene... I gotta get some tissues now.
Did you hear Legends of the Fall in the music during this scene? 2:38-2:51 listen closely to the music, it's a theme from Legends of the Fall, same composer James Horner. Both great films.
I just finished watching Field of Dreams on television and decided to see if YouTube had a clip of th ending. That was the best part of the movie. It used to make me cry every time I watched that but I'm used to it now. But its still moving. ;) How did Ray's father know about their relationship? does he somehow remember the past? or can just tell when he met Ray and hia family? i don't really understand...
1. Ray almost calls him his father, 2. John says, "I could have sworn it was heaven", he knows there's something unusual here. My favorite movie, I've seen it 70 times. My Dad died in '87, and I was lucky to squeeze every ounce of love from our relationship, but I didn't cry a lot at the funeral or thereafter. In '89 my wife and I were on one of our first dates when she took me; she had to carry me out of the theater. This movie really helped me express my grief for my father's loss.
born and raised in iowa, it is almost a requirement to love this movie, and blaspheme if you don't. if you have not been to the actual field in dyersville, you must go. and if you are lucky enough to still have your father with you, bring him with you and play catch. you will never forget it.
I completely agree. I was taken to Dyersville during a family trip and was amazed at what a wonderful place it is. And I'm not even a baseball fan. The place is magical. I love this movie.
Having lost my father suddenly this week(who just happened to be Kevin Costner's High School Baseball coach), I went looking for this section of this movie. It always has brought tears to my eyes as it has special meaning to me. However, watching it tonight, I almost feel it was written for this moment. I'll miss you Pop!

I was never fortunate enough to "have a catch" with my biological father...he passed away unexpectedly when I was four. This movie (and scene) is always very emotional for me...probably one of the most beautiful moments in cinema history. RIP Dad (Kenneth)
One of my all time favorite movies. I never so much as played a game of catch with my father, but the truth and emotion is this movie makes the feeling in any father son relationship crystal clear. A beautiful job done by all.
Every time i watch this movie i always get that lump in my throat at this part. This is by far one of the best movies of all time. I can watch it over and over. Great video
Well done Hollywood, it shows you a gimpse of the americian dream. The truth, a film that lets you fall into and remember from the depth of your soul that very special bond between father and son. You need to make more films like this. You don`t need CGI.
i have already commented on this but dont mind saying i dont understand baseball ,i am english ,sorry, but this might be Iowa but it sure seems like heaven yo me
I grew up in the tumultuous 60's and played alot of baseball. And like alot of other fathers and sons, I had a 'strained" relationship with my dad and can't recall a single instance where he and I tossed a ball together. Now my dad is gone. This is a wonderful cinematic moment and i'm sure alot of other guys can relate to the situation.
This is perhaps the only video on Youtube without a single snide or abraisive comment - everyone gets along when the catch scene from The Field of Dreams is on.
I love this film and my dad loved this film. I remember watching it with him when I was a kid and crying and now he's gone, it gives it even more of a punch. Dads are the best :)
I break down every time I see this scene. If I get something stuck in my eye, I put this scene on

It's the music that works here. Just like the end of Waterworld. Type in Waterworld credits and listen to that.
Also for James Horner fans, who also happen to be Legends of the Fall fans listen to the soundtrack from 2:38 to 2:50 it's a theme from that movie.

My dad's name is John, my dad's dad was named Ray, and I lose it every time Ray asks his dad for a game of catch.

Although I was a lot older than you when I lost my dad (42), I couldn't agree more with your post. Well said.

I don't know where to start. I'm a 42 year old guy, married with two kids. I lost my dad this summer to cancer . . . man do I miss him. He coached my little league team and was an incredible friend. In later years, we bonded over golf. What I would do to have one more game of catch.
lobwdg 3 years ago

Scorpionwalker04 3 years ago

The ending always makes me tear up a little. Blame it on James Horner's amazing composition, or the fact that I miss playing catch with my dad.

born and raised in iowa, it is almost a requirement to love this movie, and blaspheme if you don't. if you have not been to the actual field in dyersville, you must go. and if you are lucky enough to still have your father with you, bring him with you and play catch. you will never forget it.
clmars71 3 years ago 5
I completely agree. I was taken to Dyersville during a family trip and was amazed at what a wonderful place it is. And I'm not even a baseball fan. The place is magical. I love this movie.

I agree...a close second is Hoosiers and Rudy.
Kills me...but with the father element, wow.

Having lost my father suddenly this week(who just happened to be Kevin Costner's High School Baseball coach), I went looking for this section of this movie. It always has brought tears to my eyes as it has special meaning to me. However, watching it tonight, I almost feel it was written for this moment. I'll miss you Pop!

amazing scene.
this is should how people think of Costner. He went out on his own to direct...but this is why we love the guy.
Don't shoot first and ask questions later.
He has not fallen from grace, we simply ignored his progess.

I was never fortunate enough to "have a catch" with my biological father...he passed away unexpectedly when I was four. This movie (and scene) is always very emotional for me...probably one of the most beautiful moments in cinema history. RIP Dad (Kenneth)
TheAnswerIs54 3 years ago
I am 19, and this scene always takes me back to 13-14 years ago, in front of my house, me and my dad playing catch.
I wish I could turn back time and went back there, or make my own FoD, that'll be nice.

One of my all time favorite movies. I never so much as played a game of catch with my father, but the truth and emotion is this movie makes the feeling in any father son relationship crystal clear. A beautiful job done by all.

I seriously don't understand why he asks, "Is this Heaven?"
And then when Costner asks about heaven, he clearly has been there, wouldn't he know if it was heaven if he had been there?
abermen 3 years ago
I think he is trying to make the point that what Costner has is Heaven... Farm, family... happiness...
syntaur 3 years ago 3
it is comedy..."is this heaven?...No, this is Iowa." classic
costner is honest....his dad is honest.
redemption, love, everything a man could ask.
and it is cliche but a catch between father and son...ouch.
kills me.
amazing.
everman187 3 years ago 3
The line delivery is perfect.
"Dad?" "Yeah?" "Wanna have a catch?"
Oh god.

trueathlete15 3 years ago
Well done Hollywood, it shows you a gimpse of the americian dream. The truth, a film that lets you fall into and remember from the depth of your soul that very special bond between father and son. You need to make more films like this. You don`t need CGI.
blagger42 3 years ago
I could never watch this scene without shedding tears. This has to be, bar-none, one of the best movie endings ever created. Thanks for posting this.
