This song hits me so true. Why becuase it's the way my ex-boyfriend felt when I old him I was pregnant with our daughter. I was scared to death to tell him, but he played this song for me and it made me feel so much better, and now we have the most perfect child toghter anyone could ask for.
It's amazing how two people can see/hear a song differently. I have been looking for this song with only a few notes in my memory to search by. My ex husband played it for me when we got back together back in the days before we were married,
I remember him looking at me when the song came on & said "listen to this song" & looked at me with amazing love in his eyes. I remember feeling that absolutely nothing could separate us, we're there back together and living what most people spend a lifetime and more trying to find, but that "moment" passed & now we're divorced,
but listening to this song is bringing "that past feeling" into the present moment, it's truly amazing how we can feel & bring a past emotion from the very depths of suppression into the living moment right now, from a song. Thanks for this Memory REM, I would not have had it if it wasn't for you!
This is in my top 5 albums of the 20th century,just magnificent,might even dare to say it's in my top 3...fantastic song,quite brilliant album.Timeless in my opinion,a modern classic.Thanks guys for the memories!!!
Continuing the theme of superb songs by R.E.M. this one gets my vote. The whole Out Of Time album was spectacular but this track sticks out for me. Pure Quality ;-D))
Fellow fans...list your 5 top REM albums,not in any order,just your best five...Mine are "Out Of Time" "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" "Monster" "Automatic For The People" "Document" "Green" oops that's six.What the hell am I talking about ?? Every album was a gem,even "Around The Sun" and "Accelerate". Did this tremendous band ever make a bad record? Highly unlikely.Purely magnificent!!
Terrific song,terrific album,and one of the best bands ever to have graced this planet.Will be sadly missed,so glad I got into them a long long time ago,and remember when each album came out.This is a massively underrated song,as is Belong.Marvellous album all round..thank you Messrs Berry,Buck,Mills and Stipe!!!
What a great song. Losing your child to a lost relationship...makes the hair on my arm stand up. This song with Belong are the best songs on the album.
@muskypucker Oh yeah I agree, music has no racial or cultural boundaries. That post I made is just my way of expressing my love for diversity in music.
I'm a 22 yr old black guy & I LOVE TO THIS BAND TO DEATH!!!! YOU PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I'M INSPIRED BY THIS BAND TO PURSUE MY OWN MUSIC CAREER!!!
@PopCulture20 Why wouldn't you be inspired by R.E.M.. I'm a twenty year old white man and I'm inspired by every type of music Jazz, Dream Pop, Heavy Metal, Psychedelic Rock, and Blues.
loving the rockabilly thing. they are so timeless, it is a shame most people only know the radio "hits". (you) left me to love what it is doing to me. you are loving the pain you caused me. you cannot make assumptions about michaels lyrics as REMers know.
@happy543210 - Hey Happy - very much aware of "Shiny Happy People" and that Pierson sang back up on that tune from Out of Time - 1991. I would like to see that happen again; that is my point.
@happy543210 I have thought, perhaps, the couple are dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. Thus an allusion to, "fly in the honey, baby's got a baby with me..."
Also, "It's all the same. Save the shame to me...left me to love..."
But, you may be right with "loathe." It does make sense. But, nowhere, again nowhere have I found "loathe" in a lyric sheet or a song meaning page.
@happy543210 I think it's the best, most interesting song on Out of Time.
If you have not already and you really want lyrics to distill, go back to Chronic Town and Murmur - and good luck with those lyrics. I have heard "Gardening at Night" was coined from a late night cruise where a roadie had to piss on the side of the road and uttered, "I'm gardening at night." Thus a great song was born. Could be an urban legend, but I like the story.
Unless, of course, Michael is being sarcastic about "loving" the predicament he's in: That is having to share his wife's affections with a new born baby. Why else would he say, "what about me?" twice?
Allow me to dissect this song: The writer is upset that his newborn baby is getting all his wife's attention, therefore he says, "what about me". So, the chorus should say, "left me to LOATH what it's doing to me", not "left me to LOVE what it's doing to me," because that doesn't make sense. The writer actually feels guilty about being jealous of his own baby.
Back in college I had the silliest fantasy that went with this song. I fantasized he was singing the song about me. haha! Shows how clueless I was. I was barking up the wrong tree!

DickieTT 1 year ago
@DickieTT Ohh - there it is underneath. Sorry, but I will disagree with your dissertation. "Love" is the word - unless you have proof.
DickieTT 1 year ago
@DickieTT
Well, obviously I don't have proof because I don't know Michael Stipe personally. I just think "loathe" makes more sense.
Think about it: Why would he "LOVE" to be sitting there looking ugly and mean?
That don't make sense!
happy543210 1 year ago
@happy543210 I have thought, perhaps, the couple are dealing with an unwanted pregnancy. Thus an allusion to, "fly in the honey, baby's got a baby with me..."

@DickieTT
Actually, I viewed several LIVE performance videos of this song, and it looks like Michael is mouthing the word "LOVE".
Well, I still think this is a great song, so I'll assume LOVE is being used sarcastically--which is not far-fetched for Michael Stipe.
happy543210 1 year ago
