This sounds MUCH too fast, I mean, it is supposed to be fast, but this is just too fast for any real emotions to be squeezed in there. I much prefer Richter's playing of this over almost anyone else, maybe Gilels comes pretty close.
Ha, he hadn't practised it. Its rushed in my opinion and I play this piece. It didnt have the russianness and rhythmic appeal it should have. Sorry Berz, but please practise more slowly for encores.
totally agree with you and sagalat. Especially the fury of chords near 2:15 in Richter's version is just breathtaking. Melodic clarity in the central passage as well. Well, Richter...
I know not of those versions - no doubt of great interest (frankly speaking, with greater interest for Sokolov, in my personal taste...). Though at some times, Gavrilov could do pure magics... Also heard Kissin live in a 7th of 8th bis at Salle Pleyel. Great remembrance.
Could not agree more, not a candle to Richter this guy, even Gilels who is great is not close. Richter does indeed own it. Did you see the comment from Georges Cziffra on Richters interpretation ? " mind boggling were the words he used"
Well, he missed some notes at 2:15....a grand performance, to be sure, but not as nuanced or accurate as that of Richter, still The Gold Standard here
THE BEST оf the BEST !

I'm sure the recording quality is what makes it mushy sounding.

it's fast, but not nearly as tense as Richter. Richter owns this piece.

You may want to try Gavrilov and Sokolov, two more sensational renditions, Sokolov in particular.

@stienwayz Try Evgeny Kissin's young video of this piece. It's the devil playing, not himself. lol.

This is fast!
He'd probably make less mistakes if he took it a little slower...
but I love the clean-ness of it.
