I think one of the difficulties that a lot of science geeks (I include myself in this) find hard to understand is that a great number, maybe even the majority, of the general population have only a passing interest in science. Most are not aware, nor indeed even care what the complexities of evolutionary theory are or the wealth of evidence to support it. As you point out, none of this is seen by the public to impact on their daily lives and as such has no real importance to them.
