In my opinion, out of 9 studio albums metallica have made, 5 were great, 1 was good and three were terrible. At least they are going in a better direction now.

@cminormusician first off both bands have different genres in the metal catagory. 2nd metallica heavily influenced portnoy and petrucci's style of playing so saying there better then them is wrong. because there both good in there own sense, so in other words DT aint better then metallica and metallica aint better then DT.
that more stylistic wich does have an affect on technical skill but still the point i was getting at was not that DT was a better band. but they are a more studied band and that chances are DT could do mettalica stuff before metallica could do DT stuff.

Dream Theater will continue to top charts and get bigger. But Mike Portnoy's decision to leave was too ambitious. Idk if I am using the correct word but to want back in after DT was left without a drummer and was out looking for one? I'm upset on both sides but what could DT do? Search for a drummer and hold auditions only to just say, "sorry it was a waist of time, thanks anyways."

btw dream theater was declining much before. Now they want to release an album in every two years ...hoping to top the charts.

Don't get me wrong Petrucci and Myung are absolute Gods on their instruments too, but Mike was just on a whole new level. To me- it'd be like Pantera playing with Vinnie. @raymundogj People that say that just hate that Metallica changed. Their first few albums were just repetitive riffs that showed off the guitar. Albums like Death Magnetic and Load brought the sound together in a more varied and interesting format. I tried getting through and Justice for All... simply boring after the 2nd track. Same for Master of Puppets though that had the best lyrics. Just face it, they changed their sound. Machine Head corrected the old, Metallica moved on.

Dream Theater will continue to top charts and get bigger. But Mike Portnoy's decision to leave was too ambitious. Idk if I am using the correct word but to want back in after DT was left without a drummer and was out looking for one? I'm upset on both sides but what could DT do? Search for a drummer and hold auditions only to just say, "sorry it was a waist of time, thanks anyways."

@zonic26 Nooo...but just being realistic about, Mike was the greatest spectacle in DT. Don't get me wrong Petrucci and Myung are absolute Gods on their instruments too, but Mike was just on a whole new level. To me- it'd be like Pantera playing with Vinnie. Theres just something intangible that will be missing no matter who the replacement is.

@raymundogj People that say that just hate that Metallica changed. Their first few albums were just repetitive riffs that showed off the guitar. Albums like Death Magnetic and Load brought the sound together in a more varied and interesting format. I tried getting through and Justice for All... simply boring after the 2nd track. Same for Master of Puppets though that had the best lyrics. Just face it, they changed their sound. Machine Head corrected the old, Metallica moved on.
