Funding for education can be achieved by taking the profit out of the for-profit insurance system and applying it to schools and the future of our country. Great video and petition technique!

As a new faculty member at SUNY as of Fall 2008, I was excited at the prospect of then-Governor Spitzer's call for expanded funding for SUNY to make up for years of underfunding. Patterson's numerous and severe cuts to SUNY are very disturbing -- especially given other alternative approaches to balancing the budget (such as increasing taxes on the wealthy). Yes, it's time to reverse the deep cuts and return to adequate funding of higher education.
Don't just sit there and be a victim! Express to Govenor Patterson and your University Deans that we are suffering from the budget cuts from our Higher Education. If we don't speak up the opportunity for many to go to college will be taken away. We'll have an even larger gap between the socio economic classes and more fighting over limited jobs. Act now and spread the word. We need to keep education affordable!!!
please don't cut funding to SUNY! I am a 2008 Graduate of SUNY New Paltz and am forever grateful for the affordable education that has reshaped my life.
"teadroplet "said it better than I could. I don't think having our students start their lives out in such dept is very wise, either. Education should be affordable for EVERYONE, not just the wealthy! I hear all this talk about financial aid, where is it? God forbid should you be an out of state resident... education is for everyone, in every state, in every school and not just for the wealthy.
Enough raising our tuition for higher learning when we don't even see a penny of the increases! When our tuition increase goes to pay for New York's debt, then WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
Did anyone ever consider the fact that if people cannot afford to receive an education, who is going to be running the country in 10 years? Keeping education affordable isn't an issue that just affects students. It affects everyone.
Help keep higher education alive by allowing more people to come to college, not taxing all the money possible out of those who can barely afford it now.
Higher education should be free, w/o it the US wouldn't have Doctors, Lawyers, Vet techs, CEO's, Teachers, etc. Thank you for making this video and taking a stand!!!!!
SUNY Delhi - Jason L. Dunlap - Making undergraduates pay extra to support the NY budget, when we're already taking out loans to better ourselves?! Give us a break!
I am a Suny Delhi @ SCCC student. I don't feel Patterson has the right to cut funding to SUNY schools. Part of way we choose these schools is 1 our great education, and 2 the price it costs to attend. No more raising prices and cutting funding.
SUNY Delhi, thank you for being in solidarity and helping the comment count increase. YOU ARE ALL AWESOME. please add a video from the people angry at your school. We need this to keep expanding.
What infuriates me is that 80% of the students' tuition dollars is going back into the state to pay off the budget deficit. Tuition money is NOT going to the campuses to pay for operating expenses.
Students & parents are paying disproportionately to bring New York out of the budget crisis.
Why should college students & their parents be taxed?
Do students and parents know they are being unfairly taxed?
Share this video with students and parents. Get the word out about this injustice!
Governor Patterson- when there is no one to fill the shoes of retiring teachers in these fields- what then? These are not optional fields for students to be taught in high school- these are fields necessary for entry into the workforce. If you are no longer providing the programs necessary for new teachers... there will be no new teachers.
I still cannot understand how anyone can force such a budget cut (alongside a tuition raise) on a SUNY school- or any school for that matter- known for its teaching programs that is so drastic that it is deemed necessary for said school to "suspend admission to MS in Education and MA in Teaching programs in French, Spanish, Earth Science, Chemistry, and Mathematics."
I think that its ridiculous that more money is being cut from education. If anything there should be more funding for SUNY schools because they are already falling behind. Something needs to be done.
It is inspirational to see SUNY students standing up for their education. I do not have the money to shoulder a higher tuition rate. I am a SUNY student from Delhi and these tuition rate increases are just going to keep coming if we don't stand up and say something. HELP SAVE OUR SCHOOL!
Please don't do this to college education. First it was nursing gome cuts now you're attacking the colleges? Education is so important. Please dont ruin it for our students. Make college affordable.
It's ridiculous that the school has to increase tuition and then the Governor has the audacity to sweep 80% of that back instead of allowing the school to keep the money.
Governor you should be ashamed of yourself.
Unfair doesn't begin to describe what it happening to the SUNY schools.
i am proud to be apart of SUNY.. i came here because it was a lot more affordable than private schools. NP is special because of its wide variety of classes and diversity of its students.. It seems as though SUNY is changing completely by lessening the quality of education and raising the cost. That's not what college should be about!! I want to stay proud of SUNY and see more people enjoy these opportunities.
Please don't punish the students by raising tuition and cutting the budget - I'm a SUNY Alum and things were already going down hill a couple years ago - and now it's hitting bottom. I guess you didn't need that multi million dollar gym or SUB renovation, huh.
Glad to see SUNY Students speaking up in a public forum! It's important for our youth to remember that democracy only works when you participate, this is a great start. From a SUNY Grad and SUNY employee I say 'Keep it up!'
You are in college to earn a degree in which you will make a substantial amount of money that would cover the cost of your college loans. The increase in tuition you speak of is not detrimental enough to even speak about. I know these people and think they have wasted their time and more importantly other people's time by making this video. Public libraries exist for a good reason. Please don't make another video like this, you are making New Paltz seem like a town full of greek lifers; stop it.
How painfully ignorant. First off, if $620 is not a lot to you then congratulations but it is significant to many of us especially when you multiply it by 4 years. Secondly, stagnant wages and the inflation of the dollar mean less money in families pockets for tuition which means more loans which results in paying more interest to the greedy banks and less career mobility for students once they graduate.
Lastly, this isnt even about tuition increases. It is about budget cuts that cause increasing class size, decreasing class offerings, reduction in services and worst of all faculty downsizing that damages communities, families, and lives. We are quite sorry for wasting 1:40 of your time that could have been spent trolling around the internet picking fights for entertainment but rest assured. We will not stop.
We would like to remind everyone that this is about showing Albany our awareness of the situation and our solidarity as students. Please try to keep comments in this vein.
My apologies for the crudeness of my honesty. Was trying to suggest a more direct, aggressive approach; one with creative quality, so to grasp more attention.
I understand that this film is not up to high-tech standards but the point is awareness needs to be raised to this issue. i suggest you take your negativity and make your own video and help support the cause instead of bashing us.
I don't feel the need to defend myself here, but an aesthetic facade is, in fact, the framework in which politics is constructed upon. I think you're missing the simple point I was trying to make though. Having college students read from a script on camera doesn't fully express the sincerity of their concern, nor their ability to retain short term memories (hah). Adding cardboard signs and scattered dialogue doesn't exactly strengthen the message either. Regardless, GO SUNY!!!
The video is great, it's awesome that people are getting involved because I don't think alot of students understand the impact that the budget crisis is having on us personally.
It's great to see you taking an active role! Thanks for helping to prioritize education in the State of New York. As a voter and a SUNY grad, I fully support your statement and I hope that Patterson gets his act in gear.
Not to be a pessimist, the ideas are great - but if I were the Governor, this video would have little impact on my decision. The quality of the video is poor and everyone's reading from script. Not very convincing and certainly not impacting. I think the video project should be turned over to a film student with a simpler, more direct vision of the concept and present it with a bang!
I'm quite sure when Gov. Patterson gets word of this video he will not dismiss "great ideas" in the interest of aesthetics and form. It was not created to be a half-hearted, trendy, artistic video. It is real students finding a creative medium to engage others in a serious petition about our states budget. If Gov.Patterson is in fact like you and defines how convincing and impacting something is by its facade and not its content, then I would be inclined to fear for our states future.
how can we afford our education if they keep raising it?? with the job market, what do they want us to not go to school anymore and be laborers?? WE NEED SUNY TO STAY AFFORDABLE
This budget cut forces the administration to close out some of the unique classes that make SUNY so wonderful. Keep in mind that the streamlining of education adversely affects the diversity of a New York State education. SAVE SUNY!
Aside from the irrationality of cutting funding from higher education, it is disturbing to consider the other longterm effects of this plan - I fear that increasing tuition will only serve to make higher education more exclusive than it already is, adding to the already overwhelming socioeconomic inequality we currently face. By limiting access to higher ed. by hiking tuition, there will be less and less students able to afford to attend college, get a degree, attain a career, etc. No good!
It's very dissapointing to find that the state thinks that undercutting education funding is a responsible way to deal with the economic crisis. Not only is an educated population necessary for our economic future, but it also alleviates some of the financial burden people are currently experiencing. I'm sure there are corporate subsidies that could be cut from the state's budget. Plus, the state could raise corporate taxes and income taxes on wealthy individuals to increase the state budget.
I am disappointed that the bulk of the tuition hike is going back to New York state rather than SUNY and its educational programs. This essentially represents a tax on students and their families that others in the state do not pay (including those attending private schools) and is completely unjust.
Affordable education should be a basic right of the people of our state. Students are already paying far too much for their education in tuition, loans, additional fees, books, and room and board. They will be paying for their education long after they graduate. Even in the midst of our current economic crisis, the state can make cuts elsewhere in the budget. Cut the pork, not our school budgets. Gov. Paterson, do the right thing.
It might be politically expedient to further cut SUNY budgets, but it is socially destructive in the long-term for New York state. If more social disintegration is what the governor wants to achieve and to bequeath future generations, then he is going in the right direction.
A high quality publicly financed university system is an important pathway to socio-economic success. To cut funding now is certainly jeopardizing an educational system that is producing students who are well-prepared to join the workforce as productive (tax-paying) citizens. It does not make long-term sense to cut funding to the SUNY system.
Public higher education is an investment that pays off many fold. Every dollar invested in SUNY is returned to the state through the taxes paid by the more educated, productive and higher paid graduates who join the workforce. In addition to the economic irrationality of cutting SUNY, it is morally reprehensible to shift the burden of the current financial crisis on to students through higher tuition. Give SUNY the funding it needs and deserves!
SUNY is indeed the backbone of the State of New York. I am a Professor at SUNY New Paltz and find the students to be incredibly intelligent, hard-working, and they are our future. Tutition paid to SUNY colleges needs to go to the colleges, otherwise it is TAXATION, not tuition, and it is TAXATION without REPRESENTATION or NOTIFICATION. That is dishonest. Let's be honest, fair, and support SUNY students. Professor Flayhan
It's not an exaggeration to say that SUNY is the backbone of the state of New York. I can't understand why Governor Patterson is supporting policies that are severely hampering the SUNY system. Not only do his policies compromise the SUNY system, they also amount to a tax on students and their parents as a way to address the budget crisis. This is inherently unfair!
As you know, our college faces deep cuts to its state-appropriated operating budget for 2009-10. It is distressing that SUNYs state-operated campuses have been hit harder than any other segment of New Yorks educational institutions (including K-12 schools, the states private colleges, the CUNY System and even SUNYs community colleges), "Let us hope weve begun to raise awareness and that our states leaders will make wiser and fairer choices in the future."- Steven G. Poskanzer, Pres of NP

PS - I'm a SUNY student!!

No good!

Please do not cut the SUNY Budget!

These are the voices of the fastest growing voting group in New York. It would be wise to listen and respond.

A high quality publicly financed university system is an important pathway to socio-economic success. To cut funding now is certainly jeopardizing an educational system that is producing students who are well-prepared to join the workforce as productive (tax-paying) citizens. It does not make long-term sense to cut funding to the SUNY system.
donnachaffee 2 years ago 4

Professor Flayhan
donnapaulflayhan 2 years ago 4
It's not an exaggeration to say that SUNY is the backbone of the state of New York. I can't understand why Governor Patterson is supporting policies that are severely hampering the SUNY system. Not only do his policies compromise the SUNY system, they also amount to a tax on students and their parents as a way to address the budget crisis. This is inherently unfair!

Why are we paying higher tuition this year and yet SUNY NP is adding course fees for biology, chemistry and geology classes
Why are we paying more if they are taking away our teachers? "Reduced staffing levels by 51 positions"
No hat in the air for you Dec '09 graduates. "Discontinue December Commencement"
... guess NYS really applauds your public higher education.
