  • @qubixrube

Question please, Iam picking this technique up as iam practicing but iam having a problem here, iam hearing the rim more then the blast , ive tryed and watched more then enough vids to lean this, but my rim is loud and drowning out my rhythm, I guess you understand what Iam saying/ any iders please or advise

  • @ajtoy454 This is a rim shot where you continue lowering your wrist just below the rim. You shouldn't be hearing the rim any louder than a regular rim shot.

If this is your difficulty, practice rim shots like crazy. They'll make your drumming better, and you'll be playing this in no time.

  • @ajtoy454

thanxs for the reply, getting much better at it, my rim shots have np just this blast..lol

but i did order bumper-guards , there not for that purpose but sure do help alot and the rebound is awesome..:)

  • snare solo!!

  • johnny rabb is a beast

  • i never knew david tennant could play drums! =O

  • well you obviously care i dont know why you're menstruating everywhere jsut accept the fact its called a gravity blast its like calling a tree a tree... calm the fuck down and change your tampon ;D

  • this video helped me alot with my gravity blast.

    thanks for posting it :)

  • I wish I had a kit to try this out on :( Good video.

  • man dude those were gravity blasts...not blast beats...

  • Why are most musicians such dickwads? Drummers esp. It's not called either blast or gravity: those are metal grooves. It doesn't matter if something, in particular 1 thing is easy.

Everything is reletive. To be used if and when neccessary.

Fact: the best guys are the ones doing recordings, not the trick dudes. Although, again it's reletive. J. Rabb is awesome at what he wants to be doing.

  • Of course its called blast beats or gravity, it's a name thats been given to it, the particular technique hes using is a gravity blast.

and.. "Why are most musicians such dickwads? Drummers esp." is possibly one of the most retarded statements of all time, you're obviously not musically talented in anyway otherwise you would be able appriciate how hard music can be.

  • Easyy shit.

  • the titles also misleading because this isnt a blast beat hes doing its refered to as a gravity blast.

  • actually, it was originally called the freehand technique

  • So rediculously awesome.

  • By the way I think the title of this vid is misleading... blastbeats are a metal idiom and this is by no means a metal vid, it's just Rabb's lesson on his one handed roll.

  • actually jazz drumers were the fist to blast.

    like Buddy Rich..

  • IT'S ALL ABOUT SUFFOCATION with blast beats

  • no sry is not?

  • Sonny Emory Drumset Camp?

  • anyone know what sticks he uses?

  • his signature one, he has a couple of models though

  • Now match that up on bass.

  • It's all rudaments !! i dig this guys playing...great

  • It's all rudaments !! i dig this guys playing...great

  • Who nows for sure what guy invented the blast beat, it´s not like you can collect royalties for it if you can prove it.... somewhere in the middle of the 70 ´s someone probably played some really fast beats without nowone knowing, he didn´t call it anything special, I´m sure the so called "blast" were invented before people put a "tag" on it

  • wikipedia -> blast beat

  • dave lombardo from slayer, i think, is the first guy who really used them a lot

  • Lombardo used bomb blasts, which are blast beats at half speed (I think). The first people to blast beat were Charlie Benante from Anthrax and the guy from Napalm Death. Mike Smith from Suffocation coined the term "blast beat".

  • ahh, is that right? i didn't know, i've got my facts wrong. although i think i some punk bands were really the first to use what became blast beats; it may not be true, but it would make sense. many metal bands get influence from the punk bands, and some of the punk bands were really fast

  • D.R.I. were actually the first to use blast beats.

  • SlayerFan... a bomb blast is not a half speed blast, it is sixteenths double bass (which makes the feet element effectively twice as fast) with the hands playing either straight eighths (Cannibal Corpse does this a lot) or alternating sixteenths (like the traditional blast)...

  • Oh, I knew I got it wrong. Thanks.

  • no, pete sandoval

  • does anyone else besides those numbskulls give a fucking care on who invented blast beats? I know I dont care

  • Bonjour, est-ce quelqu'un peu m'expliquer (en français) comment faire du blast svp ??

    Merci

  • their Gravity Blast's nub.

  • okay the title is Blast beats: Rabb, when clearly he is teaching you to gravity blast.

  • buddy rich was the first man to ever blast

  • actualy he wasnt

  • who was?

  • Note: The first sentence in my first comment should have said "Ok it was not intended for my comment to start a flame war." It gives it a completely different meaning lol.

  • Comment Part 2-And you guys should just relax instead of taking this thing so seriously. It's completely ridiculous. Oh and a blast beat isn't a roll. I've looked into them and when you see them written out it's clearly written out as 16th on hi-hats/ride, snare, and bass or sextuplets etc. Not as a not with a slash or slashes or "Z"s being tied to another note i.e. a roll. So everyone quit the bashing and enjoy this kick ass video.

  • Ok I was intended my comment to start a flame war. You guys should all just chill. Dimufann11 asked a question and I gave him a general answer. I wasn't trying to give the most detailed explanation. He asked if they were used in Black Metal and said yes they are but they have nothing to do with a lower sound so I gave him a general idea of what a typical blast beat was and I said there were many differenty types than the one I told him about. Seriously you guys make everything black and white.

  • Dang that dude must spank it a lot.

  • dude i spank it alot and i cant even do that.....so i guess he does it more than 5 times a day

  • NO he does it to other people with his feet for kick drums and his hands for drums sticks he does it three times a day.

  • Uhh...yeah those aren't blast beats. He's showing you how to do one handed rolls.

  • ye, blastbeats are more a lower sound and used in Black Metal bands right?

  • They're used in Black Metal bands but a normal blast beat will be like 16th notes on the snare, ride or hi-hats, and bass drum at the same time. There are other variations but that's a common blast beat.

  • okey thx i didnt know that

  • no blast beats are one handed rolss on the cap of the ride and the snare and double bass (usually)

  • thx for the info

  • he is demonstrating different ways to do the single hand snare/cymbal rolls

  • umm im pretty sure a blast beat isnt a roll. its just single blasts, well u hit the snare, hit-hat/ride, and bass drum, u hit all three at the same time repetitivly.

  • yeah, but its considerd a single stroke roll since its usually thirty second notes, and the bass drum is usually double the snare\ride speed, so its not exactly at the same time, and ive only seen one person ever do a blast on a hi hat, its usually on the crown of the ride cymbal

  • omg no, why the fuck is the double bass faster hten the other 2? no they all hit at the same time. do u even drum or listen to metal?

  • yes, ive been playing for about 12 years. so you got double bass, usually going at around 300. now you play singles on the snare at and ride at 300, then you would be playing all of them fast, but it would sound like crap. you could have bass going at 300, and the singles at around 200-250, sounds much better. the first is called a drop. fast downbeats. the second version is a full. fast downbeats, and bass upbeats. so yes, the way your describing is technically a blast

  • yea and in death metal.

  • usually they are used in grindcore, and faster paced music

  • actually its USUALLY in death metal and black metal, there are blasts in grind core but in death/black metal blasts beats are mostly what your going to hear.

  • actually you are an idiot. Blast beats are in probably 100 genres.

  • okay, maybe you deffinition is wrong. i cant think of a metal song that has a blast beat in it. but im pretty sure every grindcore song has a blastbeat (along with a pigsqueal

  • ok your a fucking idot, im not talking to you any more your lack of knowledge in metal pisses me off.

  • agreed.

that fucking idiot probably hasnt even heard of Behemoth

or even fuckin Kataklysm or Aborted

    honestly mathcore, youre fuckin retarded.

  • okay, lemme see behemoth.... ive seen em live twice, kataklysm..... dosnt really do that much for me aborted..... thats grunge metal... and its pretty lame. now, i want you to go listen to "chased through the woods by a rapist" by waking the cadaver. 20 econds or so in he does a blast beat. exactly as ive described it, double bass, with single strokes on the snare and ride not and btw, all behemoth plays is just duble bass with quarter note crashes and snare hits on beat 3

  • dude...

Waking The Cadaver is fuckin gay.

im just not gonna talk to you.

    wow...

  • see hes an idot, this is the frst time on youtube ive atually gotten seriously angry at someone for being SO STUPID!

  • fuck yeah

this guy dosnt know shit about what hes saying man

its fuckin pathetic so id rather just not bother

  • waking the cadaver pwns

  • Gravity blasts use the same technique as the rolls he is doing.

  • Mathcore, your taste in music is atrocious.

  • what do u mean scene kids...?? i fucking hate people who use that term "scene kids" wtf.. hehe dont worry im not even close to that shit i enjoy grind... but the term... "scene kids" fucking annoying... just like "mall punks" lol

  • thats fucking ick shit man you fucking rolls on the snare are so fucking quick man keep up the great work

  • and you think this is blast beats...

  • Not bad. get new cymbals. please.

  • @kiloe14

"Not bad. get new cymbals. please"

What is your problem dude? Do you even know what kind of cymbals they are? Do you know how old this vid is? Do you even know who this is? Johnny Rabb is a record holder for the worlds fastest drum roll. I think he knows what kind of cymbals he likes.

  • Worlds fastest drummer? Who cares. Do a search on Papa Jo Jones and then tell me Rabb can play!

  • quote@meadowz06

"Worlds fastest drummer? Who cares. Do a search on Papa Jo Jones and then tell me Rabb can play!"

Oh, I get it. Since there is someone out there that is (in your eyes) better than this guy, that means that this guy can't play? I've seen him in person and have yet to find a vid on here that really does him justice. Besides, maybe there are better, but as a musician, you should never discard something because it's not what you like.

  • dude, they're one handed rolls!!

  • gravity blasts? haha jeez i hate scene kids

  • I couldn't agree with you more. haha

  • wow 77,777 views

  • Its not a gravity blast.

Its one handded drum roll like CMSdline said.

    Anyways awesome.

  • They're the same thing... One is just used in a different style.

  • Is the "one handed drum roll" like the only thing Johnny Rabb can do?! Its not really that cool anymore because everyone can do It

  • agreed. I hate it when people call it "gravity blast." It sounds so dumb. It's free hand.

  • I learned this from a book, my mum made sure i did all my homework and learned blast beats!!! Also you realize, you look like something out of LORD OF THE RINGS when you play!!! P.S Nice gay boy band microphone

  • @benpowellforddlas

"I learned this from a book, my mum made sure i did all my homework and learned blast beats!!! Also you realize, you look like something out of LORD OF THE RINGS when you play!!! P.S Nice gay boy band microphone"

This technique was invented by Rabb. Most ppl that know much about him know this. The mic is called a headset and most pro studio drummers use them when they talk so they don't have to lean to a mic but can still use their hands.

  • really interesting! and very good !

  • GREAT gravity blast, this is great vieo!

  • i dont remember blast beats being on just the snare drum?

  • very very good!!

  • gator

  • youre fucking awesome! i love your technique!

  • dude this is johnny rabb, he's a pro drummer, he uses the freehand technique

  • kewl check out my drum vids and more!

  • you make it look way to easy!

  • that is because he plays all the time! cmon dude go play

  • i saw him live at a clinic and it was fucking amazing

  • not really umm..what I was expecting :S personally wouldn't call any of this blast beats [though he would obviously destroy me and most people on here]

  • Saying that he would get owned in a metal band is correct. He is not a metal band drummer. He is an amazing drummer, but not a metal drummer.

  • you know why he would kill a metal drummer cause its not a bunch of caos, comon dude, not repetitive, blast beats get old fast

  • wow

  • That was very informative, I'm gonna try that.

  • great snare work!.. Not metal though.. this guy would get owned in a metal band with that technique, i doubt itd work..

  • it does...check out Flo mounier of cryptopsy... the song Carrionshine from the album "once was not" is a VERY good example

  • perfect example. he is just god

  • angelskingarden as well

  • omfg your a fucking retard.

he is a proper drummer, and whats wrong with his technique? why would he get owned in a metal band? I bet he can make a loud noise like them while beating the fuck out of you with his other hand.

and dont reply, i am a genius. i will serve you

    wanker.

    with chips

    so go and fuck yourself

  • yeah he would...even if he is a past holder of the world record for the fastest hand he would...man come on the guy can do more than 1000 strokes a minute. He INVENTED what you metal drummer call the ''Gravity Blast''. Saying that he would get owned in a metal band is a VERY stupid statement. Johnny is great and he innovates.

  • yep, rabb is the father of blastbeats, so saying that he would get owned is like saying the wright brothers would get owned by a jet. its not a valid comparison

  • man you havn't seen a gravity roll intill you've seen this (put youtube dot com/ in front) watch?v=bCPH9d7zEE4

  • perish from our lives please

  • damn one handed?(not this vid)

  • dudes! This guy eats blast beats for breakfast! Can you not see how amazing he is? Wish he was my drummer.

  • Good video you're a good drummer and all, but dude you are not metal and there were no blast beats at all! I was expecting a guy with long hair to take over and then actually perform blast beats! Nevertheless, good video!

  • agreed

  • what the hell is this??? this is not a balst beat.

  • this is not blast beats....

  • yeah he is playing gravity blast beat

  • no hes not playing a gravity BLAST BEAT...if someone plays fast strokes on a snaredrum it dosent mean its blast beats...no if he would have incorporated the bassdrum then we can talk blast beats

  • correct, this is not blast beats, this is the FATHER of blast beats, jhonny rabb, showing everyone the best technique to play the technicall part of a blastbeat, the one handed rolls

  • blast beats and this pole smoker shouldnt be in the same sentence

  • wow.... this fella, named jhonny rabb.... INVENTED BLASTBEATS!

  • Has anyone else besides me noticed that all Johnny Rabb's playing has a quality of samesness about it. He's a fine drummer, true, but but perhaps he needs to try some new chops, different styles etc. Maybe it's just me but I wanted to ask.

  • he has loads of variation to his playing. hes just demonstrating the fulcrom roll cause thats one of the things hes famous for. and anyone who doesnt know how easy it really is is like OMG HE CAN ONE HANDED ROLL?!?!

  • Hahahaha everybody here is so fucking stupid, for the buthces that are saying this isnt blastbeats, listen to Origin, that guy jus isnt beating hard on it, nice work.

  • This is not a blast beat, it is a gravity blast, you infant mongoloid.

  • How do define Blastbeats, sucker? This is gay!

  • Any blastbeats here? None that I can hear. At all.

  • its not bullshit

if you think that whatvr fuck you

you havnt seen me play so how the fuck would you know

if you get a snar with a smaller rim then gravities are easy as fuck but if th rim is like the regular 2 inch rim thn you hav to us mor muscle

  • Those aren't blast beats.... those are gravity rolls.

  • I Wonder If His Feet Are As Fast As His Gravitys

  • That is really good... i wish i could do that. But im not a drummer so... Anyway the part where he's actually playing looks like its been speeded up- it's tht good.

  • That's really interesting -- would love to see more of this kind of footage.

  • Its Called a fucking Gravity Blast

hes good but that shits not even that hard

i been playing for maybe a year and i can already fucking gravity and blast and i barely play its not hard to do

  • wow, my new hero..

  • yes...but can you play more beats in a minute than any living being...cause rabb can...and i doubt you have the control he does...so give some respect

  • I've seen this guy play a clinic before, hes really good.

  • This guy is damn nice as well. Met him before i even knew who he was. Note to the metal heads; this man is a Drum n' Bass friek.... for a reason.

  • i'm sick of jonny rabb and his one handed rolls! do something different jonny!

  • damn koons..

  • drooll i wanna here im do that behind some badass guitars

  • HES GOOD - ID LIKE TO HERE HIM PLAY METAL

  • realy nice men but is better if you call it jojo mayer thechnique ...

  • hahahah!! you fuckers! "BLASTING" my ass! that's "one hand roll" you asses! :D learn techniques, that's all.. that's no fucking gravity blast. gravity blast is just a fucking beat named by some ass blaster.. the technique is "one hand roll" invented like 39057325 years ago dickwads.. :EE

  • ridiculos,the best drummers they are in metal,nicolas barker,tony laureano e

  • Hey Henry Rollins, i didn't know your twin brother play's drums. haha. those gravity blasts RULE!

  • damn he makes it look soo easy!

  • good teacher indeed, respect!!!. thoppr has a good sense of humor out of experience. Don't worry thopr I'll give you that job come over tomorrow

  • more like a rimshot

    GAY! haha

  • yeah id let him give me a rimjob lol

  • thats johnny rabb world guinnes record 2000 fastest drummer in wft wolrd fastets drummer competition

  • ahahahh Malachi666666 said it sounded like a rim job

    hahahahaha

  • great gravitys no doubt

  • He's a good speaker/teacher. Easy to follow and not boring to listen to.

  • Hmm. Informative. Thank you.

  • i can intercourse with my gf in and out faster than that :P

  • because they are over prviledged nerds who dont got a life -_- and thankies for correcting meh lol was sleepy that day

  • Who the fuck cares what is wrong, what is the flaws, how the music is done, or just trying to be a dick and criticize the person... Who cares.. all that matters is he is good... If they arent good, oh well... Just let them be and practice.. Jesus.. Stupid fucking dicks who dont have a life...

  • Yup! Armies of shit-throwers found a dream-house here and their shit supply never, ever runs low.

  • Oh, you should of said what ARE the flaws, that would be proper grammer, don't leave anything out there for these aholes to attack you for, they know EVERYTHING!!

  • Hah. you were paying out that guy on is poor english skills, when you yourself spelt grammar wrong.

  • Who the hell is that dude? He's damn good!

  • haha i dident know jeff gordon played drums!

  • kinda looks like him dont it. but i fucking hate jeff gordon. ~SMOKE~ all the way baby!!!

  • It's basically just a press roll/buzz roll. The speed mostly comes from stick rebound, not actual hand/wrist technique.

  • no its not its using the rim as a second falcrum or how ever you spell it he says it in the video

  • As the speed gets higher, "bounce" comes more and more into play, typically, which is what makes it similar to a buzz roll. Also, it's a way to get two hits from one stroke using help rather than pure technique (like a buzz).

  • its called a grvity blast because rim roll sounds to much like rim job and its only used in extreme metal, the only people who call it a rim roll are drum core geeks.

  • So this is extreme metal. ROCK ON!!!

    666

  • well tell me what genre of music uses gravity blasts? This guys just showing off his sticking skills, but as far as full bands using advanced druming I can only think of a few extreme metal bands that do such as Origin. So ROCK ON beanerdip, I was just trying to be humerous, I didn't know someone would jump all over me and be a f@cking dick about it.

  • Yeah i know how it is used it metal. I was just trying to be humerous too man.

  • all right that's cool now we can all rock on.

  • for the guy who said that using the rim is cheating.

I don't think it's cheating cause maybe its easier for u not using the rim but for me is not, so there is no right or wrong way of doing things as long as it sound good.

  • I saw him Live with Robert Marcello and some other guy, and for the record hes amazing live, you can not complain about him, extremely precise and clean.

  • this is freehand!!

    very good!!

  • a gravity roll is just snare, blast is with cymbals and bass incorporated.
