@TalksWithDirt Good comment.....The most iconic aircraft in aviation history has just landed in daylight.....and, "What type of aircraft is that?"......uh.....Think real hard!
@bboucharde Every time I see a DC-3 on approach or a 737-400+ they two aircraft remind me of the other. If I had a few tens of millions to throw around I'd develop a DC-3 sized aircraft, in tail dragger config, with a pressurized cabin but powered by turbofans. A jet version of the DC-3 made to do the same missions these old birds are still doing. In the 90's I was impressed that there were so many DC-3's still flying, and I even more amazed they still are. Wonderful.
@TalksWithDirt Thanks for your thoughts. I agree 100%. Some aircraft reached a peak of near perfection decades ago, and the DC-3 is one of them. I would include the Boeing 747 in that category, in a different scale, of course. The Boeing B-29 comes to mind, too---once the engine cooling problems were generally resolved.
the tittle of this video is the last landing does that mean that you sold the aircraft or what? because i work at a museum at paine field and we just purchased a DC-3 whats the status of this aircraft?
I believe my dad probably flew many times as a passenger with that "old war veteran" many times during the 1980s if he piloted 737s and 727s throughout Alaska.
Kent, do you have a link that shows these DC-3 segments in sequence? I've shown my dad the awesome B29 and B25 clips, but it's tough to figure out the sequence of these DC-3 ferry segments. Thanks for posting these!
Nice and smooth landing! On a side note, I was flying into Manila International about 15 years ago and as we taxied to the terminal I was welcomed by the sight of about 6 or 8 C-47s, all in jungle camouflage, sitting by the side of the field. They looked like they were still operational. I should have made it a point to go over and check them out and wish I did. What a graceful, rugged bird!
Flying a DC3 is on every CPL wish list! But they don't mention the noise, the draughts, the leaks... after about five flights, it starts to get a bit much and the right hand seat of a 737 seems very attractive, even if your sole purpose is to lug the Captain's flight bag around and carry the can for all his/her bad decisions. I am amazed at the lady in South America who seems to fly these with one hand, gently coaxing it around, no fighting with the yoke at all. The airplane knows best!
Lol u think it's difficult in brazil u need £80,000 to £100,000 to even start training in Britain unless you go through the RAF or other parts of the army
It is unfortunate that in Brazil it is so expensive to learn to fly. seeing this video rekindle my desire to learn to fly. not to mention that I am in love with old planes.
dang! I live in washington, 30 minutes south of KPAE. I fly out of KRNT, renton, in a C152. Ive flown into arlington for the event there, have you ever brought your DC-3 to the fly in? Ive seen one there b4
@Sam9524: They may be old school, but they sure are historic(world war 2, Normandy), and reliable as they are still flying by the hundreds, 64 years after the last one rolled out of the plant.
Did it. Got on board the Southern Cross out of Meacham Field in Ft. Worth and my ninety year old father in law, a lieutenant commander of naval aviation in 1946, flew the DC3 for the first time in 64 years... got it all on video, production is compressing now, will be loaded tomorrow... gotta watch if you love warbirds and the greatest generation!
@daveperk Great job, Dave. Glad to hear it worked out. Looking forward to the video. If he could remember how to get the landing gear up (not a simple task in the DC-3) then he should consider himself current and qualified today!
@fly4fun Got it up. can't seem to post a URL here, even a YouTube URL, which is nuts. but, go to my channel just called 'daveperk' it is the most recent video called "two old friends get together"

Amazing. My father in law is 90, flew these planes in the war for the Navy, and I have made arrangements for him to fly one TOMORROW MORNING. I'm doing a full video on it, will post it when done. He last sat in the cockpit of the DC3 in 1947. He says he remembers it well and believes he can do it with no problem. He's fit enough and still sharp, and I think this will be a day for the ages... can't wait to see how it all unfolds..

Mr. Wien this video is awesome, flying with your Dad must have been a great experience. I'm a pilot myself struggling to make it, u know how it is these days.....do you know somewhere I could get to fly the DC-3?? is one of my alltime a/c even though I am a young pilot. Great video!
@gilz16 I'm not sure. Maybe someone else knows. I do know that the going rate was around $1000 an hour where I trained. They don't do it anymore, however.
@gilz16 did cost me $1k, included all fuel/oil and copilot services too, of course.. I don't think they can make a profit on that, given the current prices of those things.. they do it for love of the planes.
@gilz16 heyy theres a company in Yellowknife here in Canada called Buffalo Air, they fly mostly cargo and limited passenger service in dc-3s and several other warbirds, they hirse newly minted pilots and if you pay your dues on the ramp you can be flying one of these after a few months.
So i am just wondering why he asked if they remembered everything, were there no checklist's? i mean he says checks complete later.. but.. Just alittle confused. any help?
@fly4fun Oh ok That does make sense. i actualy thought of that after i posted haha. Oh well... Great Video!, that looks like it would have been alot of fun!
@nocrap62 And most of them seem to have forgotten they should be retired. I heard in Africa they are used to carry cargo and people into remote areas...well...something like that...LOL.
@pasantehen yes but once aluminum is on ground u can see enough so that control remains comfortable - I once attempted no-flap approach with approval of instructor, at about 25' agl I requested add power and pull some flaps due to loss of forward orientation, disapproved by instructor who could see where we were at, we had a normal flare and tire contact but nvr do that again.
Great video. I use to love to watch the airliners take off and land at Woodrum Field in Roanoke, Va. Many flights each day. American flew Convair 240s, Eastern Martin 404s and Piedmont had DC-3s. Must have been 20 DC-3 flights a day. When they took off, unlike the American and Eastern planes where all three landing gear came up together, usually on the DC-3s that would retract one wheel and THEN the other. The third wheel in the back did not retract as I remember.
That has to be exhausting. 5 days of flying in that plane. Seems like so much work. Great video angle. Must have been windy by the looks of the wheel movements.
"tell grandpa to go easy..."?Maybe your grandpa should have told you to go easier with that slack jaw when you're talking about something you know absolutely nothing about.
haha you almost made me laugh on that one. What's even more hilarious is that you just told a licensed pilot he knows nothing about aviation. I see we aren't using our head today are we?
For the retards like this guy - my point was that he needed to better use the controls INSTEAD of going back and forth with them rather harshly. My instructor always told me not to do that.
Piloting a DC3 isnt like flying a cessna kid.The controle movements are much more exaggerated. And I'm not a "retard " asshole. If you were a real pilot I think you'd know the difference between your "instructor" telling you how to handle the yoke on a LAC and handling a 70 year old transport.
Your dad is so cool... he even sensed 90 feet w/out reading the instruments! BTW, that was a nice fly over the kids house in the previous video, sure he was thrilled!
I like this video because the co-pilot hasn't got his hand stuck on the thottle "helping" the captain control the airspeed like you see in some videos. I know DC-3 has the prop levers too, and the most ridiculous video I've seen so far, is where the co-pilot has his left hand on the prop levers while the pilot reaches over his arm and controls the thottle. Just stick to the radios or flaps lever or something. Either that, or just let the co-pilot land the plane.
It's in Las Pinas and I live here in Las Pinas, I thought it was just an ordinary fire worsened by hot weather but when I followed the black smoke, it was a DC-3 crashed just about 3-4 subdivisions away from our home, the crash site is in Pulanglupa Subdivision while we are in Manuela Subdivision...

wantedtofly my f4u4 and mustanp51 and spitfile fastrhoguhvalley -wonderhow a 4-5rotor wankel egnine flies the f4u4 wihtshortened butbroader wings....hmmm
some airlines use the dc3 for example cubana de aviacion....use a dc3 to travel in the island.................and in my country venezuela the airlines left to use the dc3 4 years ago.....because we have a crash everyday..hahahahaha now we use boeing 737 100 and 200.......they are old too but better that the dc3...but the dc3 i think that they are the best aircraft ever made...they are too old and they are keepin flying
The main landing gear on this is in the front. Makes for a spectacular landing in comparison to current airplanes. DC-3 is different and way nicer. Nice piece of history.
I flew this a/c for 3 years when it was N8009. Next time, try a full stall landing with full flaps... you can full stop in about 1000 ft. She's just like a giant piper cub!
This looked like a tough landing (difficult to keep the steering steady), I mean hey, when you think about it, this is a DC3, no big-time highdraulics.
What a great experience!! You two make an awesome team.
I'm sending this url with a suggestion to watch all your videos to all the aspiring pilots I know.
(Dad's not a pilot, but I did take him on a West Texas Tour nearly ten years back (restored 170B), and got him a 767-200 sim session, before 9-11. I treasure that handful of father-son flying memories; you two have won the lottery. Bravo!)
This is such a good video. Really shows how much input is coming from pilot. Great video!

FourStars use DC-3 for cargo in PR...
tdc310 2 years ago
some airlines use the dc3 for example cubana de aviacion....use a dc3 to travel in the island.................and in my country venezuela the airlines left to use the dc3 4 years ago.....because we have a crash everyday..hahahahaha now we use boeing 737 100 and 200.......they are old too but better that the dc3...but the dc3 i think that they are the best aircraft ever made...they are too old and they are keepin flying
jhenzell3 2 years ago
yeah. probably need to focus on the aircraft when your landing a fucking dc3. traffic is less ordeal
williamsonj7 2 years ago
Just because they are cleared doesn't mean that they don't have to look at what's going on.
herpahezen 2 years ago
dude, THEY DIDNT LOOK FOR TRAFFIC BC THEY WERE CLEARED FOR THE OPTION.
williamsonj7 2 years ago
Aren't we forgetting anything ??
Don't think so !!!!
(Checklist where are you !)
HAHAHAHAHAHA
helzotter 2 years ago
wheels down and 3/4 flaps , what else do you need! (only the brakes after touch down! (LOL)
bugsier5 2 years ago 2
how about they were cleared for the option.
williamsonj7 2 years ago
Nice job. Both pilots never took there eyes off the runway. How about a little scan out of the cockpit for other traffic? Geese Louise.
geeselouise 2 years ago
Geeselouise,
absolutely right man.
Did you notice both pilots did not even care to check for traffic before turning to base.....
Nice footage never the less.
helzotter 2 years ago
...Nice airplane....but they look like a handful to fly....after watching the pilots yoke inputs. lol

She's just like a giant piper cub!
pferdflecker 2 years ago 3
full stall??? i sure want to see that!! i'm in dominican republic and sometimes a turboprop DC-3 comes. it still amazing airplane
elaleman87 2 years ago
you have to fly these old planes all the way to ground. No push a button and let the plane do all work.
topdog25608 2 years ago 3
this made me less scared of flying cause i see how at ease they are :)
hannahjuani101 2 years ago 3
wow that was a nice landing My dad flew a DC-3 in the 60s in Burma
dinomagic 2 years ago
Wow, what a smooth landing yeah! congratulations awesome.
MAMALON526 2 years ago
This looked like a tough landing (difficult to keep the steering steady), I mean hey, when you think about it, this is a DC3, no big-time highdraulics.
ticoguy05 2 years ago
When the hell did you touch down???
madisonelectronic 2 years ago 3
Just goes to show you the old duffers still got it. Greased it on.

mitgolden76 3 years ago
What a great experience!! You two make an awesome team.
I'm sending this url with a suggestion to watch all your videos to all the aspiring pilots I know.
(Dad's not a pilot, but I did take him on a West Texas Tour nearly ten years back (restored 170B), and got him a 767-200 sim session, before 9-11. I treasure that handful of father-son flying memories; you two have won the lottery. Bravo!)

Cool video. You are really cool guys. I really think your father is a cool pilot! It takes a REAL pilot to fly these planes!

DC3 looks a bit tricky to fly... a bit unstable maybe?
e633xx 3 years ago
He had 18 to 25 knot winds. Tends to make things a bit jumbled.
teheee 3 years ago 3
Never flew one as a PIC but as an observer from the right seat I can post that it takes muscle to fly one.
alienhuman 3 years ago
Great video, thanks, My uncle Clarke Smith had a DC-3, one of my earliest memories.
Father flew the (EAL)one in the Smithsonian, Brother has an R4-D now, and a PBY!
cjracer1000: you can solo in gliders when you're 14, its a cheap good entry into flying
It will really teach you great flying skills

It's not our airplane, we were just delivering it. It's undergoing restoration in Victoria, B.C. It may end up in Pan Am colors.
