  • I like how this is flipping off Punk Rock

  • Collins said in the DVD interview that came with the 1976-1982 box that Abacab was supposed to be a punk version of them, meaning taking some songs and throwing away those that sounded like everything they had done before. Whatever was left was considered for the album. According to Wiki, Rutherford also played the drums on the studio version. I like the album version IMHO, like they were playing Devo for a moment! I still turn it up when Phil keeps screaming "WE ALL KNOW!" at the end!

  • I'm completely into both the PG and PC eras and I absoluetly LOVE this track - its a parody - don't take it so bl00dy seriously!

  • i bloody hated this track on abacab until i saw it here-they definitely woke it up for the stage....

  • I hated this song at first; but then I got blackout drunk and it was the best thing ever. Now I listen to this and the bad-quality old VHS version of "Point Of Know Return" whenever I'm drunk.

  • All bands have a funny song.this is Genesis.

  • Hmm, I'm surprised there was no booing on this song. Tony said the song was "routinely booed" when play live. Tony was the only one that liked this song; Phil and Mike didn't really like it and just put it on Abacab to both please Tony and because Ahmet Ertegun told them to put it on. If Phil didn't write such weird lyrics people probably wouldn't bitch about this song, but hey, it is a "punk pisstake", according to Phil. Pity Tony's not wearing his scuba goggles, I wanted to see them :(

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday

He wore Scuba Googles during Who Dunnit in Cologne, there is a funny Photo of it :D

If you know the Leiden Concert from 81, the Audience Booed out every song, only Me and Sarah Jane,Dodo And Abacab were satisfied for them, and I think maybe also man on the corner.

However, thats why Genesis is my most favourite band... Its Progressive Rock, its Ambient,Pop,Rock, ArtRock, Punk, Instrumental... ITS EVERYTHING, even Metal look at Mama Tour In that Quiet Earth Version ! :)

  • dad luvs it...... i h8 it lol....

  • Worst song of Genesis...

  • Mike drummed? Why didn't they triple up on the drums once in a while? :P

  • This song is great when you are sharing a joint with 40,000 genesis fans

  • GARBAGE TRACK! THIS IS NOT PROG ROCK! DON'T EVEN TRY TO DEFEND IT!!

  • @ecapa0020 Wow! You're really intense about this stuff, aren't you?!?

  • Fuck!! I bet fucking Justin Bieber or the bitch Gaga have better songs than this piece of shit track. Shameful.

  • I've always thought this song was loads of fun. Why can't they take the occasional lighthearted approach?

  • Everyone is giving this song hell, but I don't find it that bad. It is pretty funny actually.

  • Why's Rutherford on drums?

  • @kingtarkus Mostly because of the same reason this song was released... This song was mostly a joke and it seems to speak about somebody farting and people trying to blame somebody for it.

  • I personally don't see whats wrong with this song. i mean come on its better then stuff that we are getting these days.

  • self indulgent bullshit from an otherwise great band....

  • @Putaspellonyou . I kind of agree with you. But they are a better then great band!!!!!

  • I always thought this was funny, yeah a rare shot of Mike on drums, the only other time he ever drummed was on Anthony Phillips' first solo album "The Geese & The Ghost." In my opinion "Abacab" came just after their peak, the 4 albums before it being the best they've ever done, listen to them chronogically and then "Abacab" is basically the sound of all that falling apart. That said while not as good as its 4 predecessors, the only song on this album I absolutely can't stand is "Keep It Dark."

  • I didn't do it.

  • Arguably the worst sone they've ever written... much less had the gonads to perform live.... in stadiums.

  • Why are you people just mocking this song all the time? This is just Genesis having some fun!

  • good

  • Yeah, fun to see Mike drumming, wonder how much of the drumming is actually him, notice Chester is also drumming. A pity we don't see Tony with the scuba goggles in this clip. :D

  • I can hear 2 snares and 2 kick drums going

  • it was a pop at the punk movement at the time. it was saying ok you tossers we can play your shite now try playing music like we do! Genesis are still around still filling stadiums ,punkrock wheres that now? think Mike Phil and Tony made thieir point me think !!!

  • ABACRAP

    Well it's fun anyway. :>

  • Mike Rutherford is the guitarist.

    Chester Thompson is the drummer.

  • Did you watch this video carefully?

  • Yeah I corrected him before I watched the whole thing.

  • Fact, this was actually the first song to get Genesis BOOED out by the crowd. It happened in Leiden, here in Holland. I think i understand why people don't like it, I don't like this song very much. Fun to see Mike drumming tho hahaha

  • The song is purposely odd / bad. Part of why a non drummer (Mike) is on drums.

  • I don't think a song is bad on purpose, the odd ( Weird to say the least ) is true i guess, this can't be very serious, but my comment was that the band was booed out of the hall, because of the song, it does say something...

  • I'm sorry - really. Your comment makes no sense. You're disagreeing that the song was oddly done on purpose. Then, you say this can't be serious, which means they were not serious with the tune - hence making it bad on purpose. They were booed? Okay, they have been around for over 40 years. Had to have happened at some point. And, the fact it was this song is no coincidence. But, I'm through with this on line conversation, okay?

  • Tony thought it was funny how emothona everyone got on this song when they played it live at the time.another great band such as Radiohead has some odder songs then this even.

  • @keithfan8886 yeah like "Fitter Happier"

  • I'm a huge Genesis fan, But this has to be by far THE worst Genesis song.

  • Oh yes, Stupid lyrics as well as a dumb melody.

  • Phil Collins is bad fuckin ass! I would'nt fuck with the guy! Not even if i had a ninja army in back of me! Phil Collins can drop kick all your fuckin ass's!

  • The only way to understand this song at all would be an LSD trip.

Coincidentally, summer 1982 was filled with 'sunshine', so needless to say this song became a parody because everything ran together like streaming colors. Talk about strange. I really believe the band was under it when this song was done. No doubt about it

  • We know at least that these are Phil's cocaine years, and before that he used to smoke pot quite a bit. Peter claims he's never done drugs and the jury is out on all the other members.

  • if I heard this song when I was on acid, I'd probably kill myself to end the pain

  • You're wrong if you buy the 2007 reissue of Abacap which comes with a DVD on which they tell about the recording of that album, Tony Banks said that he wrote it as a way to display that weird keyboard sound he found that sounded like somebody farting. The Lyrics are about smelling somebody's fart and asking "Who dunnit? who passed wind here?"

Ahmed Artegun thought it was hilarious and had it included on the album.

  • I'm a huge progressive rock fan, and I *love* this song. Progressive rock is about daring to go as far outside the mainstream as possible, and by that criterion, this song is a huge success. I think it's great that the same band that did Supper's Ready could also do a song like this -- it just goes to show how diverse they were as a band.

  • I contend that Tony Banks discovered the mushrooms Peter left in the back of the fridge in 1972.

  • Yuck. And Atlantic wanted THIS on Abacab instead of the far superior "You Might Recall"?

  • I'm a genesis fan like so many of you, but this song is simply a bomb, studio or live. it may be difficult to perform, but it's still bad. and to think collins wastes dramatic theatrics on a tune like this with that get up. as for callin all stations, I pretended there was no genesis at that time. I never listened or bought that album.

  • The juxtaposition of your ass is retarded whoever Arloest85 is on the comments list. Understanding the fact that the song is a joke, it is still the worst song ever made amplified by the fact that they preform the song as serious as possible. Lame as hell. Enjoy winners!

  • This is the first Genesis song i let my friends listen to, and they love it.

  • DELICIOUS!

  • i dont know about this song...its cool to see mike on the drums though

  • I have to admit, as much as I don't like the album version of this song, the live version is priceless! XD Phil's performance (and outfit!) more than makes up for the overall song, and his high-pitched "so!" just makes it even better... :P

  • the worst song by Genesis... Gruesome, horrible...

  • You mean you haven't heard anything on CAS?

  • Good one. Icy, you are right.

  • No. It's a joke and you don't get it.

  • I think it would have been hilarious if they (theoretically) did Supper's Ready in concert and then played this immediately afterwards. The juxtaposition would be precious.

  • CDs were invented so fans could program skipping it.

Toast was invented so fans can delete it.

  • I love it that they did this song live!

  • I love to torture my parents with repetitive songs like this! They like the Genesis "hits", but one time they heard me play this one in my bedroom & they shouted, "Turn that noise down!"

  • what the heck is Mike Rutherford doing on drums?

  • Kicking ass.

  • I couldn't help but laugh at that response.

  • Great song!

  • pathetic song, the worst album of genesis

  • No, that award goes to either Calling All Stations or We Can't Dance, Godddd..see ya!

  • Unglaublich das sie dieses 'werk' auch live gespielt haben ^^

  • Dodo, Lurker and Who Dunnit are meant to tell a story. It's all about who killed Davy Jones. If you read the texts of the songs one after the other you have the Story of Davy Jones and the siren who took him with her because she loved him. But he couldent breath and died.Lurker offers us some suspects and Who dunnit asks the big question:Was it I or was it me? Or was it A or B? Or was it X or Z? A meaning Dodo and B maening Doggo a person in the sick mind of Dodo. You see this song isn't nonsens.

  • Incredible song. They always had a sense of humour.

  • I can't believe such a great band like Genesis could sink so low that they made this song.

  • You mean you never heard anything they did AFTER this album???

  • Genesis did the ABACAB tour in 1981. They came to Holland for a concert(Leiden)

The Dutch audience hissed its displeasure when Genesis played this song. The Dutch fans wanted 'Old Prog'.That didn't go to well.

Collins became furious and very hostile towards the crowd. He was very angry and frustrated. He calmed down after a while.

    I remember it very well.

  • @BenMolen I remember, and I quote Phil: "Anybody who doesn't like it can come and meet me afterwards, and I will kick the f***ing s*** out of them!"

  • awesome song

  • It's somekind of funny joke song and i like it that way. But i agree it's pretty much worst Genesis Phil era's songs.

  • Why is he on drums? cool song :P

  • I love it, crazy song!!

  • I didn't actually know Mike Rutherford could play the drums so ta whoever said that. Why do all the genesis fans moan about this song? Its not the best sure but its still pretty good!

  • RUTHERFORD ON DRUMS! YEAH!

  • yeah! surrealism feat. bizzare...and who dunnit? GENESIS! :-)

  • And we all know what comes after that ending...

(For those who don't, it's In The Cage :D)

  • yes that is daryl. lol

mike rutherford is playing the drums, but on collins's kit, and chester is playing on the other side of collins

  • This song in fairness is very very catchy, although it as a cheesy as anything, but yet again Later Genesis were the masters of creating catchy tunes!!

  • This song was intended to be as nasty and ridiculous as possible. Tony got some wierd noises from his prophet 5 if he held down notes and changed presets, the others decided to throw down a song around it to shut him up and a few people talked them into putting it on the album. I wish they were a bit more public about that, since this song is singly the most convincing evidence of drug use in this band!

  • Drug use? What are you talking about?

  • They definitely didn't use drugs. This was just supposed to be a big joke, 'a pisstake on punk.' Ahmet Ertegun chose it to go on the album over the beautiful 'You Might Recall.'

  • I never heard that the was his choice over "You Might Recall"? Wow, that is whacked. You might Recall is so good and this is possibly the worst Genesis song joking or not it is just filler and they are too good with too much good material to put filler on records. One of the best songs that never got but on any CD were "Feeding the Fire" and "On the shoreline". How they did not end up on the CD is beyond me.

  • one of the most common misconceptions about Genesis is that (because they sang the songs) that Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins wrote them.

Peter wrote the lyrics for "When The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" but that was about it

Phil never wrote a song until DUKE when he Wrote "Misunderstanding" the MAjor Gabriel Era and Collins Era Songs were written by Tony Banks And Mike Rutherford-Sorry for the wake up call-Also Phil had nothing to do with Peter leaving it was because Peter would only sing his

  • lol,hes all stoned with his goggles ((-_-))

  • hahahah cool like it

  • That is simply fun, I love it.

  • Wow! Mike Rutherford playing drums! Rare footage, indeed!

  • Does anyone realize? This song is about a fart !!! Check the lyrics.

  • It's not possible to learn this...

It's not a real song, it's humoristic, it was fun for them to record this track

Ear others albums like Trick Of The Tail and We Can't Dance and you'll see.

For me, Phil have not the same imagination that Peter but he has one.

It's very different. Who Dunnit? isn't a serious song.

  • I agree that Gabriel was the best lyricist in Genesis. But if we're talking music, I think they got BETTER after he left...at least for a while.

  • lamusica3785: you're totally wrong. Trick Of The Tail or Wind And Wuthering are in the same vein and in my opinion superior to some Gabriel era albums. After that, Genesis (fortunately!!) evolved. Otherwise they had disapeared. Songs were more direct but not inferior. For example, songs like Home By The Sea, Fading Lights or Domino are nothing to envy to some songs from the gabriel era in my opinion.

  • @InTheAir77 look, home by the sea, and domino rocks, but fading lights totally sucks, it's so unnecesary lenghty and silly

also: this is (in my opinion) the worst genesis track ever!!! compare this to the musical box/suppers ready/dancing with the moonlit knight i mean, whaaaat the hell?

  • @angusyoung98 You say "compare" to other Genesis tunes. Why compare one tune to any other? People like you are not real supporters of "the art". Genesis is and have always been an experimental orchestra. To say Fading Lights was "silly" makes you appear to be foolish. There are many complex areas in that song. But, I digress. It also looks as if you do not realize that this tune was intintianally "awful". There was a whole other vibe here. Watch the mini documentary about Abacab.

  • @angusyoung98 Fading Lights sucks? Dude, listen to the lyrics and think of where the band was in their career at that time, then tell me it sucks. It's very personal and poignant. It was written for them.

  • Never cared if it fits the tight constraints of "prog" or not -- THAT'S a helluva performance! And that's the whole purpose of going to a concert.

  • I love this song :D I love "ABACAB" album. Great performance. I died... I'm freakin in love with Genesis :)

  • SO RARE TO SEE MIKE RUTHERFORD PLAYING DRUMS !! Am i the only one that actually like this song here???

  • It's a joke! In newest Genesis book T, Banks say that!

    Genesis!

  • Exactly! Nevertheless, it IS prog, I consider it to be. You didn't see stuff like THIS at #1 on the Billboard charts back in 1981. Also, this song WASN'T EVEN INTENDED TO BE ON THE ALBUM. That was Atlantic Records's decision! Or so I've heard, I think I read this on Wikipedia, or somewhere.

  • That story is true. Tony Banks on the DVD portion of the Abacab reissue said "Who Dunnit" was not intended for Abacab and the late Ahmet Ertegun (head of Atlantic Records) told the band to put the track on the album to give Abacab some flavor.

  • How could a genius like Ahmet Ertegun like this crap

  • I think this was supposed to be a joke song. It is funny. And as a TOTAL Genesis fan, I still like it.

  • I heard somewhere it's about someone farting.

  • haha that would be funny if it was TRUE.... but it's not, was it you or was it me? lol

  • That actually makes sense

  • Without a doubt the worst piece of caca they ever did. No wait, 'Illegal Alien'. Nah, this one.

  • Well actually, caca is something you and I produce everyday.

If you manage to produce a caca like this one, I'd be proud to have spoken with you!

    Cheers :)

  • Well, it WAS a joke song.

  • No, I believe "Illegal Alien" takes the prize as their worst song of all time.

  • Tony Banks rocks it on that synth.

  • According to the new "chapter and verse" book, this track was a testament to how not-seriously they took themselves at that point. They were very intent on shedding their prog stigma since it was no longer any way to get listened to.

  • It's nice to see Mike Rutherford behind the drumkit.....

  • I was wondering if that was him... I'm not going crazy then :)

  • This song is still better than 90% of Calling All Stations.

  • good point!

  • Calling All Stations was different, but it was a good album. Genesis had every right to change direction.

  • They didn't change direction at all with CAS. It's pretty much the same stuff they'd been doing since 1983, only even more watered down and streamlined.

  • I guess we agree to disagree then.

  • this is the one song i always skip on abacab...but this a a good performance so i guess its cool. dont know anything about a joke, anyone care to explain

  • I always loved this song, it's freaking hilarious!! Their one-and-only joke-song. The most funny thing 'bout this one is that maaaaany people didn't get the joke! :-D

  • hehehe, yeah. This song is so catchy and funny! People always tell me, "Man...That is their worst song. It sucks." Older bands have joke songs too! =P

  • yeah its just Genesis having fun playing around with the instruments. see this whole show again with martin levacs tribute band! turnitonagainDOTcom

  • I LOVE this song, and Phil does it well, it's funny

  • The mighty mustache of Daryl Stuermer

  • Is that Daryl?? I thought it was a guest performance by Oates of 'Hall and Oates' :D (j/k)

  • haha this is complete crap... but I still enjoy it.

  • love it when phil goes "WASnt me!!"

  • Crap. Absolute crap. It's like seeing Tolstoy write for People magazine.

  • Why is Rutherford playing the drums?

  • Because it's a funny song so I guess they wanted to add some weird things live (mike playing drums, phil's hat and glasses.. etc..)

  • I never noticed that. They all are great musicians and can play all the instruments.

  • Die hard Genesis fan here. I absolutely adore it. This performance is even better than on the album.

  • I love this song, especially as it annoys many Genesis fans.

  • I love it too! One of the few die-hard G fans who actually like it!

  • Did Bono steal those sunglasses years later? And why on earth did they ever play this crap live?!??

  • Those sunglasses and that outfit look suspiciously like the ones from the "I Missed Again" video...anybody know why he feels the need to grab his shirt collar like that?

  • Because he didn't do it!

  • Love this song !! might perform this at my next gig !! be well funny :)

  • Believe it or not, but there actually was a time when Phil Collins was really cool.

  • THis wasn't one of those times

  • yes, he was supercool as the original genesis drummer (and what a drummer he is).

  • At least Mike's drumming is better than his songwriting.

  • Yo... I find this song to be a rap song. If they play this song for the 2007 tour, I'll be dancing down the aisles. Boom-Shocka-Locka!!

  • Funny song. They have to perform it on the tour in 2007!

  • I think the song ist very funny and cool!! GENESIS 4 EVER!!

  • Mike Rutherford on the drums, I've never seen that before.

  • I did'nt notice that, nice spot !

  • That is very unusual. Doesn't look like he doing anything too complicated though, but still Mike playing drums is weird.

  • The song is horrible, but the way they are performing it , is great and hilarious. Thanks for posting this !
