WINE is far from perfect I have had better and better results with it, but overall, I am still booting into Windows for my Steam games. Wine is getting there, but it hasnt really "arrived" yet, It WILL arrive it is a question of how much longer is it going to take, weeks, months years...
WRONG >> DELL never stopped making Ubuntu Laptops I was look at one today on the DELL website. They just moved the page...
and no we are talking about FREE as in OPEN not CLOSED ...
Not just FREE as in cost...
Closed source software is holding the world back from growing ... Do you know how many time Microsoft sued Linux groups ? They had tons of lawsuit against Linux groups and trying to take peoples freedoms away ... That is why it's a War ...
The problem with Linux isn't people in the community. ALL software communities have jerks and saints in them.
The REAL issue of Linux not making it into the mainstream is MONEY. Case in point: Mark Shuttleworth. The spent millions to go to outer space, then started Canonical which produced Ubuntu after he landed. Now that's arguably the best distro because of the financial investment.
Another case in point: a nice community won't fix Netflix streaming for linux, only money can do that.
I really much liked this video as it was about toughts, questions and answers by personally without being a jerk and wannabe as most who talks about Linux. Very nicely talked and brought up some of the wider areas.
there's nothing wrong with the linux community, it's the microsoft and apple fanboys and overall the masses of computer users that are too afraid to try something new. every OS has it's learning curve, it's not that freaking hard. Hell the open source community makes it easier to get tech support than official channels for proprietary software. I'm not a fanboy as I really like windows but I can move between them without an issue.
@DocterSorcerer i completely agree with Plunow. I can defiantly admit that services like WINE are getting better as time goes on but if for example like in my experience you have an ATI Video Card and you want to run a game on high settings, your gonna have some lag and occasional crashing. But software support for OSS programs from distro to distro of Linux are hyper prone to breaking. At the end of the day I just want my programs to work right the first time.Duplication of work is a stupid.
What's Wrong - Is software availability - Give me a QuickBooks Pro 2010 that will run in a Debian environment - a/k/a/ Ubuntu - and I could totally switch ALL of my computers. I already run Firefox and Open Office on ALL of them Dr. Shalit - BTW, every 'pute I have with 160 Gb or more HDD is Dual Boot within 24 Hours of acquisition -. Dr.S

Like you said, install OpenOffice, start using it, then don't buy the next MS office. And keep progressing that way until you feel you have hit a good balance of free software and stuff that you can't live with out. Then as free software progresses consider if they are ready to replace some of the applications that you earlier couldn't live with out.
But thats not to say the windows community is any better.
I have asked a LOT of questions on several different linux forums and 99% of them never got answered or they got answered with the wrong answer that didn't work.
With linux you just have to poke at it with a stick because nobody else gives a damn.
Seriously not to long ago I went to a computer repair store and they told me to put windows xp on it and remove linux. Just shameful.
@mariokillzuall you have to be in the ps3 os to play ps3 games. so no you canot play cod4 with a keyboard. they took all support for operating systems in the new update
What I find troublesome about Linux is that I just spent the last 2-3 hours using other's ideas on how to get certain games at least to work and nothing works in the end... I have heard quite often Linux sucks hardcore for gaming. I got World of Warcraft working on Unbuntu about 2 years ago. Now I am at the situation where I am trying to get Perfect World International to work and it's not... I don't understand all the small errors.
There is a difference between free as no paying or free of freedom. the community hasn't nothing against paying for software, they a problem with closed source software. if your software developer shuts down operations you are stuck on an outdated software. I have nothing against paying for software, but i have a problem if I pay 300$ for a software, and from 4 or 5 years next its unsupported and need to pay again to update it..... here is the big difference...
It costs a great deal of our time, time= money. It also costs bandwidth to download the files+ plus the applications to use with the operating system.
It's obviously going to be a hassle for the average user to learn it, supposing they want to spend years looking through forums for terminal code- "Try using Google" How you think people end up on these boards?!.
For now, I can only see two useful features exclusive in linux and these are superior network security and remote exploitation.
I found a distro opensuse 11.2 that finally worked somewhat on my old compaq evo n620 c,It works, but the only problem is no brightness control and the display is too bright and it hurts my eyes.If Its not fixed to lower brightness, back to windows.
Sadly people just don't care what gets them online for their facebook, youtube, myspace things. If people had to make the choice then Ubuntu or generally Linux would be the perfect choice for many people!
i think many people dual boot linux like i plan to because we like that application are for windows but, we like the linux interface. I like some programs for linux but, some programs are missing
Thats due to the hardware manufacturer making the drivers for Windows as they get more revenue from it. The linux driver will most likely be made by a team who are external to the hardware makers. This is not a Linux issue per se, it is poor support on the part of the hardware creators. NVidia make awesome drivers that perform amazingly as they support both platforms. In short you have a sucky wireles card with sucky suppor. Intel are very supported as are a lot of atheros chips.
But the developers do have specs on the hardware from the manufacturers website and they know how it works so driver incompatibility should either not be an issue or easier to install.
Some refuse to surrender specifications. Broadcom are a perfect example of this. There are actually a number of teams providing what you mentioned, if they are provided with specifications and information as required then thy are happy to make the drivers for their hardware free of charge. Something they pay their Windows devs thousands to do. Its a shame but again the fault is with the hardware manufacturers, not Linux
That's just how it is, and it's why Linux will be forgotten 10 years from now. The Linux development community is full of snarky, immature punks with penguine fetishes, who have no regard for the importance of new, non-text command users, and they chronically ignore such user's demands. It's the absolute worse at the official Ubuntu site, where anybody who complains is first met with doctrinary insults, and persistence gets you banned.
Mepis community isn't like that one bit, I got helped instantly with my ATI driver problems, and nobody told me to search first or anything like that.
@fuckbillgates1001 or it could be that you are just a jackass, did you ever think of that?, and no you are thinking of code crackers, hackers are something different entirely, and they know that there are some things that a command line is better at doing than a GUI
Linox os's are great to use but you need to be smart and invest a little time into making it all fit your needs, most people are either too lazy or too scared to leave the familiarity of M$. The linux community doesn't need mass uptake anyhow so there's no pressure, stick with windows if that floats your boat :)
@mozaks80 I agree completely and that's the best way to sum it all up without any way to counter your point since it's fact. the only people that would argue with you are fanboys. and we all know they are idiots
@mozaks80 The time requirements are a truth; but what I understood that is mainly because we have been used to Microsoft paradigm, the way things are done. I've used Ubuntu for about a year and so relieved with the fact it can powerfully manage memory. I only got 2 gigabyte of RAM and nothing is slowed down - everything running fine.
@fytubevw I think in terms of memory linux is scalable to suit. You can get by in some cases with 256MB of ram (Puppy Linux for one), but you'll lose obvious aspects of visual flair and other shortfalls. I ran with 2GB of memory for years, worked fine until I decided to whack a W7 VM on top, 4GB with PAE. Not surprising that you're not slowed down with it, its a good amount to use for most purposes. As far as M$ goes, I cant say what's best for 95% of pc users, cause i ain't one of them :P
I think that some people are simply set in their ways and resistant to change. Others simply like what they like which is ok in my opinion. I have been a Windows user for a number of years and have had some problems with system crashes , virus ,malware, etc . I still run windows 2000 professional on my desktop but will need to learn Linux because it is the OS for my laptop! It looks exciting .I'd at least liek top try it before i criticize!
Maybe I'm just fortunate, there are drivers for all my hardware except a very cheap webcam my brother gave to me. What we need is more people to write hardware drivers. We always think of drivers as something that aren't our problem, but we can be capable of writing drivers too. If you know C then you can pitch in.
Never too late to learn, buy a refrence book and use the intertubes =]
I'm a highschooler and slowly but surely studying programming and theory in my freetime. I don't really have a focus a particular language, but so far I have done some stuff with Haskell and Lua. I think I'll focus on Perl. C would be nice of me to learn.
@supergenius1994 Its a fools errand... I used to really like Linux. Now I dunno what to think. They keep running into the same problems that killed Unix, functionality of software from distro to distro.Using programs in Linux is like trying to patch a roof that has a thousand leaks in it during monsoon season and all of the roofers are on holiday...If you want a version of Unix based OS that is supported and that works buy a mac. A Linux desktop is bare bones unless you are a software dev.
@stopthrm really?, because that is the reason why I switched from windows to linux, windows would at times randomly refuse to run programs, and it would sometimes run them slowly for no reason, I haven't ever had that problem with linux
@supergenius1994 Really? Learning Bash aside, I can hardly get anyting to run right once compiled in Linux. GLC 3d recorder is a prime example. I just want to make a recording of a pcsx game and it doesnt work. AT ALL. I cant record any 3d with GTK record mydesktop without there being a huge lag and plus I cant get any of my steam games to run smoothly in WINE. Plus when I go for help on the Ubuntu forums I just get ignored after a while citing my video card as the problem... I am sick of it
You dont need to know how to code its pretty simple all you need to know is mostly "cd ../, cd ./, make, make install, configure, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade. It's pretty simple but time consuming to find fixes etc.
I had so much trouble because I have many things that did not have drivers like for instance. My Logitech g15 keyboard g5 mouse, soundblaster xtreme gamer x-fi card. And the 9 series Nvidia drivers work with all the models except the one I had (9600) so I was pretty unlucky.
@supergenius1994 Most people will call themselves computer programmers by programming in Java or C++. Very few people will actually go as far to learn Assembly.
I know a little bit of assembly but I rarely ever use it.
@autonomous2010 true, but the average person will probably define a programmer as someone who "can speak the same language as computers", so by that definition, you need to know assembly (The machine language) before you can be considered a programmer
cotinued : what i use is the following -system : xubuntu (fast & lightweight) -email : yahoo but there are nice mail clients (too many in my opinion) -chat: x-chat -video: VLC (yep theres one for linux) -video encode : mencoder -web : firefox (obviously ) -IM: pingdin (or somthing like that :P ) -imaging : Gqview (best image viewer there is -image editing : Gimp i also add wine & use uTorrent and other windows apps & GAMES!! frankly theres too much choice under linux!
not at all, but having Linux is like having a toy. Having windows ia having a tool for whatever you want. I'm a level designer on my free time, and I can do with windows things that are impossible to do in linux
OK Windows is a good OS but it's not perfect for everything.
For my own use I have a little Acer One netbook for casual out and about web and office work. This is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix., because the it performs so much better than with XP. boots faster, battery life is longer.
I do quite a lot of audio podcasting as well, for this I've found a Mac to be the best tool, thanks to a programme called Ubercaster.
@Paumonsu nothing is impossible with any os, operating systems are like programming languages, you can do whatever you would ever need to do in any programming language, it is just that some make it easier than others
sorry but the mac is growing faster than linux taking over campuses and colleges if Microsoft didn't ruin it with vista people wouldn't have sided with apple.
Well if e-mail is the most important thing for you and you are running MS-Outlook then that is of course the first thing you should move... It really doesn't matter what you choose.... everything I have tested so far is way better that Outlook... At least make sure you have backups in a different format that the PST files that some people still use...
I think you are close to the problem with Linux... i.e. the community... personally I think the bigger problem is that many of the Linux community don't make newcomers feel welcome.. many Linux users make newcomers feel stupid.. so it could be that.. I see your point about Windows having better apps in some respects.. I myself run dual boot for that very reason! Windows is better for some things and Linux is better for others.. unfortunately there isnt anything in the middle just yet....
Linux will never be as popular as Windows because to use it you need to understand the technical shit that hardly anyone cares about and doesn't want to learn.
@Trefellin actually it isn't "technical" it just takes some getting used to, because you grew up using windows, and you don't NEED the terminal, it just makes things much easier
"really now? and when it asks for the genuine Windows code?
yah didn't think so."
Wine Is Not an Emulator. Because it is only translation, far less performance is lot (normally) and no Windows license is needed as it would be for virtualization.
"Don't even think of running games through it though...
most won't run."
Not really. CS 1.6, HL2, and SC I can vouch for which run 90% or higher (no noticeable changes in the prior two with a minor change in SC shortly prior to game launch). Most other Valve games are reported to run fine or (atleast playable) along with others such as Crysis, CoD4, etc.
Well your really talking about Free Software there are only a couple free software nuts. There are a lot of open source nuts. You can make millions of dollars and have free or open source software. it just implys the code is open. So maybe you should have researched licenses agreements before commenting on that.
You don't need the terminal in tex, ubuntu or OpenSuSE.
My mother using Ubuntu and she is happy. Some of my neighborhood using ubuntu and want to use it becouse the like the grapical enviorment and the fast system, and stable and free apps.
As a Linux user, I pretty much agree with everything you said.
linux needs a real office rival. it needs to be nice looking and super functional. the problem is, the open source platform isnt good for business. If someone can see your source code, why would they pay for it?
GIMP is NOWHERE near the quality of photoshop.
these two things are key. But itll never happen, because the profit motive is what drives true innovation.
"linux needs a real office rival. it needs to be nice looking and super functional. the problem is, the open source platform isnt good for business. If someone can see your source code, why would they pay for it?"
yeah u can, but do you think i ever paid for support with ubuntu? nope i always goto the forums.
Simply put, hoping that people get confused with your product so much that they have to pay for support isnt a good business model. I dontsupport patents, but i realize that being closed source is one of the only ways to make profit.
and that just showed you why they arent in the mainstream.
selling support is typically only good for other businesses who run linux (ie: a copany who uses linux servers). desktop users just want to click and go. ANY terminal work will turn them off.
And no, theres no linux distro thats "click and go" like Windows or OSX.
Unless youre "into" computers, youll never actually want to use linux nor will you coprehend it.
Only people who understand computers are into that.
Do you really think the average mom is going to read a computer manual, or ask for help? Nope, she wants it to work immediately, and if it dosent she considers it broken.
Most users dont even know what the difference between viruses, worms, trojans etc are despite the fact that they often have encounters with them. Terminal is no go for these people.
Perhaps these sort of people really should have lessons before using a computer.
Problem is a lot of home users just see a computer as a simple appliance, like a washing machine or microwave oven.
IMO a computer is a rather complex thing to master, staying safe from viruses, applying updates, not opening malicious emails, etc., Kind of like owning and driving a car if you will.
People don't go out driving in their cars, unless they've taken driving lessons and passed a driving test.
I think too many programmers spend too much time creating yet another Distro of whatever flavour of LInux instead of making better programs to use with LInux. I stick with Windows for the software - I would like to switch to Linux but would miss the Large choice of software. WINE is far from perfect I have had better and better results with it, but overall, I am still booting into Windows for my Steam games. Wine is getting there, but it hasnt really "arrived" yet, It WILL arrive it is a question of how much longer is it going to take, weeks, months years...

Another case in point: a nice community won't fix Netflix streaming for linux, only money can do that.

there's nothing wrong with the linux community, it's the microsoft and apple fanboys and overall the masses of computer users that are too afraid to try something new. every OS has it's learning curve, it's not that freaking hard. Hell the open source community makes it easier to get tech support than official channels for proprietary software. I'm not a fanboy as I really like windows but I can move between them without an issue.

But thats not to say the windows community is any better.
I have asked a LOT of questions on several different linux forums and 99% of them never got answered or they got answered with the wrong answer that didn't work.
With linux you just have to poke at it with a stick because nobody else gives a damn.

First thing the Linux community should develop is a SpeedTouch Broadband Modem driver - then everything else will fall into place.
AClarke2007 2 years ago
It costs a great deal of our time, time= money. It also costs bandwidth to download the files+ plus the applications to use with the operating system.
It's obviously going to be a hassle for the average user to learn it, supposing they want to spend years looking through forums for terminal code- "Try using Google" How you think people end up on these boards?!.
For now, I can only see two useful features exclusive in linux and these are superior network security and remote exploitation.

MrTabby5000 2 years ago
Thats due to the hardware manufacturer making the drivers for Windows as they get more revenue from it. The linux driver will most likely be made by a team who are external to the hardware makers. This is not a Linux issue per se, it is poor support on the part of the hardware creators. NVidia make awesome drivers that perform amazingly as they support both platforms. In short you have a sucky wireles card with sucky suppor. Intel are very supported as are a lot of atheros chips.
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago
I would call it incompetence of the driver development team.
MrTabby5000 2 years ago
it's not..a team...
I'm curious as to how exactly you think this works..
haymakers9th 2 years ago
But the developers do have specs on the hardware from the manufacturers website and they know how it works so driver incompatibility should either not be an issue or easier to install.
MrTabby5000 2 years ago

It's the absolute worse at the official Ubuntu site, where anybody who complains is first met with doctrinary insults, and persistence gets you banned.

supergenius1994 1 year ago
Linox os's are great to use but you need to be smart and invest a little time into making it all fit your needs, most people are either too lazy or too scared to leave the familiarity of M$. The linux community doesn't need mass uptake anyhow so there's no pressure, stick with windows if that floats your boat :)

experimental0000 1 year ago
@mozaks80 The time requirements are a truth; but what I understood that is mainly because we have been used to Microsoft paradigm, the way things are done. I've used Ubuntu for about a year and so relieved with the fact it can powerfully manage memory. I only got 2 gigabyte of RAM and nothing is slowed down - everything running fine.
fytubevw 1 year ago
@fytubevw I think in terms of memory linux is scalable to suit. You can get by in some cases with 256MB of ram (Puppy Linux for one), but you'll lose obvious aspects of visual flair and other shortfalls. I ran with 2GB of memory for years, worked fine until I decided to whack a W7 VM on top, 4GB with PAE. Not surprising that you're not slowed down with it, its a good amount to use for most purposes. As far as M$ goes, I cant say what's best for 95% of pc users, cause i ain't one of them :P
mozaks80 1 year ago
I think that some people are simply set in their ways and resistant to change. Others simply like what they like which is ok in my opinion.

Not really. CS 1.6, HL2, and SC I can vouch for which run 90% or higher (no noticeable changes in the prior two with a minor change in SC shortly prior to game launch). Most other Valve games are reported to run fine or (atleast playable) along with others such as Crysis, CoD4, etc.

supdawg444 3 years ago
As a Linux user, I pretty much agree with everything you said.
linux needs a real office rival. it needs to be nice looking and super functional. the problem is, the open source platform isnt good for business. If someone can see your source code, why would they pay for it?
GIMP is NOWHERE near the quality of photoshop.
these two things are key. But itll never happen, because the profit motive is what drives true innovation.
xkeltoix 3 years ago 2
"linux needs a real office rival. it needs to be nice looking and super functional. the problem is, the open source platform isnt good for business. If someone can see your source code, why would they pay for it?"
You can sell support for your software.
Etuxia2 3 years ago
yeah u can, but do you think i ever paid for support with ubuntu? nope i always goto the forums.
Simply put, hoping that people get confused with your product so much that they have to pay for support isnt a good business model. I dontsupport patents, but i realize that being closed source is one of the only ways to make profit.
xkeltoix 3 years ago
Rad Hat? SuSE?
They selling support for their GNU/Linux distrubutions, and lives on it.
Etuxia2 3 years ago
and that just showed you why they arent in the mainstream.
selling support is typically only good for other businesses who run linux (ie: a copany who uses linux servers). desktop users just want to click and go. ANY terminal work will turn them off.
And no, theres no linux distro thats "click and go" like Windows or OSX.
Unless youre "into" computers, youll never actually want to use linux nor will you coprehend it.
xkeltoix 3 years ago 2
OpenSuSE is pointAndKlick(TM), Ubuntu in the latest release too.
In windows and OSX you don't have the same powerful terminal so, the graphical interfaces is the olny way to do something.
I'm a poweruser, I'm running gentoo/Arch GNU/linux and using awesome as WM.
Etuxia2 3 years ago
most people dont WANT the terminal.
Terminal is no go for these people.
xkeltoix 3 years ago 4
Perhaps these sort of people really should have lessons before using a computer.
Problem is a lot of home users just see a computer as a simple appliance, like a washing machine or microwave oven.
IMO a computer is a rather complex thing to master, staying safe from viruses, applying updates, not opening malicious emails, etc., Kind of like owning and driving a car if you will.
People don't go out driving in their cars, unless they've taken driving lessons and passed a driving test.
