No lie, the inclusion of secret characters in this game was like, the dumbest idea ever. lol
For one thing, the entire concept of a new revision of a game is to rebalance a title~ allowing old versions of a character into a pool of a rebalanced roster~ is not something the devs ever had in mind to keep in check.
Then allowing them in a tournament on top of it? It's laughable. Choi is a really legendary player~ but I wonder how good he would have done without O.Sagat available to him.
O.Sagat was an intentional character design, as were all the old characters (those addes normal cancels were no accident). I'm guessing it was to appeal to players who prefer the older style of Street Fighter 2 without the supers, juggles, and throw techs.
The crazy thing is that Capcom designed such ridiculous character like O.Sagat and the other top tier characters. But I like it. I'm glad ST isn't full of a mediocre cast like a certain other game.
What's mediocre to you, looks like a wider variety of usable characters to me.
But this is all old news, I love Super Turbo~ and glad for what it was, however when a new revision of a game comes out and you have a way of skipping the entire balance design of that revision by the use of a secret character, it kind of takes away the point from my perspective.
Old Sagat may seem old, but the addition of those cancelllable normals (st.lk, st.mk, st.mp) means Capcom had the intention of making him a used character. Why not just give N.Sagat those cancels? I guess they saw Sagat fit the archtype of an old character more than he did a new character with a super combo, throw softens, etc. They made a new character out of an old one. I find it pretty strange and silly too.
Definitely made for an interesting history with Street Fighter, and yes~ an arguably entertaining decade. Whatever my feelings on the topic, none of that can be denied. HDR is always there as a shining example that too many fixes in the name of balance can sometimes not be a good thing either, but they made the proper choice in this arena. Still, it's no Super Turbo, and your reasoning shows a lot of what makes that so true.
Choi is very intimidating here. Must've been disheartening having those rushes completely shut down.

John Choi has amazing reflexes/reaction. I've never seen anyone effortlessly stuff Balrog's charge punches as often or as easily as John did here.
