Infact, that's exactly what I am trying to do since I'm trying to get into a Vampire the Masquerade group. Video games are about graphics and control, if you don't care about those two factors, do tabletop rpgs, because the gameplay elements you speak of predate video games. The POINT of video games is the graphics and controls.
I thought the point of a video game was to have fun? There a plenty of shitty games with nice controls and graphics. I don't know where you've been for the past few years, but there are games that have choices AND graphics + controls. You can make choices in video games you know.

I played Fallout 3 by Bethesda and thoroughly enjoyed it; but now I feel empty and want to go back to my wife and kids (Fallout 1 and 2); adjust it for inflation what you get is still marketing we all paid for when we bought our $50 copies, whereas the engine was canned and ready to go and had nothing "fallout" about it
You know, it is possible to do a realistic and Fallout style game in first person. I'm not saying Bethesda did, but it is possible. Isometric is nice, but that's mostly because as gamers we have never had a first person RPG that is even -remotely- realistic.
These games all tend to have enormously scaled down worlds. It is ironic to me that Bethesda use such small game worlds now, considering they developed Daggerfall - you'd think they could find a happy medium with the world size.
Sucks that van buren aka fallout 3 never came to fruition by the original team but I think you are all going a little bit too hard on bethesda's fallout 3. It's a pretty awesome game, sure the dialogue isn't as engaging and funny as the first two but it isn't horrible by any means. also bethesda gets kudos for working with obsidian and letting them develop fallout new vegas.
there is no game like Fallout 1 or 2. Just no game out there that will give you that gritty/humor feeling. I wish developers would keep it original! It's not possible with money on the mind....

@lambdaman223 I don't think FO3 sucks as a game, but it was not a real Fallout game, since the gameplay is totally different. Also I don't think it is better than FO1 and 2. They both had such sarcastic humor that FO3 will never have, also I prefer FO1 and 2 (also the Tactics' one, which I think had the best battle system) gameplay and battle system. Bethesda eternally sucks for it had ignored FO3 Van Buren project.

@lambdaman223 Black Isle did have some sucess on many games, Buldersgate is one of them. I will say Bethesda is a better company at the time. The Fallout 3 was better marteted however that does not mean it is better. Also Fallout 3 sould more copies as it used the momentum of the two other games. People were waiting for the game and talking about it.
Also just because you are at the time a better at marketing dose not mean your a good Artist. marketing is important however in the art world

If I am not mistaken, this is Van Buren, the original Fallout 3 which was being made by Black Isle Studios, but they laid off the whole cast and gave the Fallout license to Bethesda

Indeed, Fallout 1 & 2 were some of those games that got an incredible soul, being deep and authentic like no others.
This video shows an atmosphere that is pretty faithful from the original Fallout games. After seing some videos about the original Fallout 3 project, I think it may wouldn't be as good as this project could have been, but would certainly be way better than this Bethesda's Fallout 3 masquerade in all the case...

Played Fallout 1, 2 and 3 including all (original) mods. I must say FO3 is ok and I quite enjoyed to play it. However if it werent for the V.A.T.S. system if would have been nothing else than another farcry, halflife 2 etc etc...
Fallout has... I dont know how to say it... But I think the word "soul" would suit right. It's something unique. Atmosphere, gameplay, grfx, sounds. FO3 has some of it but (to me at least) no more than a sad little wink to the past Fallouts (1 & 2)

It did not only butcher it. It humiliated it, it buried it then raped its corpse. Fallout 1 and 2 were classic rpgs, where you had meaningful choices, witty conversations and serious atmosphere. Fallout 3 is just another run of the mill Bethesda rpg with broken quests and meaningless dialogues. They claimed that they wanted to remain true to the original..and then they created a shooter for casual gamer kiddies. THAT'S WHY!!!
Admittadly the dialog was far better in FO 1 and 2, but please... get off your high horse, as fallout 3 does not deserve such abuse. It is a great game in my opinion, worth of being a successor to the first 2.

I played both F1 F2 and F3. RPG wise F1 and F2 are so much more supirior. Many quests, and you can choose very much which path you take in each quest. F3 was fun but it didn't feel really falloutish with the quests

Fallout 1 had no such lapses in quality. That's funny. Patchy AI, glitches galore.
If you're just referring to the voice actors, then of course they didn't have such lapses in quality, because there were around 10 people tops with voice acting in F1.
Also the faces in F3 do make expressions. I'm in a bit of doubt as to whether or not you played it. If you call Dukov's girls whores his face gets angry, and then it goes back to normal, just like the talking heads in F1 and 2.

That's true but there were massive mods, such as OOO, which completly revamped Oblivion, making it desreve the award... sure the mods arn't bethesda made, but they provided the tools... nevertheless, crap out the box perhaps, but pure gold when modded.
or hps that get so high by the end of the game every fight is you and a super mutant taking turns shooting rockets at each other until one of you decides to die or combat that is turn-based but has zero tactical flexibility so every fight takes a goddamned hour but you're not doing shit other than shoot, shoot, shoot, reload (fallout tactics actually fixed that but no one played it because it didn't have WALLS OF TEXT) or perks that either made you a god or were completely useless
Fallout 3 sucks ass because you can't min/max a char who can crit to the eyes for 300 damage by level 5 or weapon ranges so short the enemy is in melee range after 1 turn or weapons that follow Diablo style weak-medium-strong-uber progression or retarded useless teammates or rushing the power armor 5 minutes into the game or vague quest objectives or a story that's literally "kill mutants, find water" or skills that you never use or a first aid skill that heals 1 hp at a time
"Kill mutants, find water"... that is literally the quest line of fallout 1... but reversed, find water chip... sort mutant master. There are things that are negative about every game buddy... but for every 1 wrong thing with ANY FO game, there are 10 good things... Besides, I know you not hate the game... but rather those that have angered you in real life :P

If you were to wander into a post-apocalypse settlement, start telling everyone to go fuck themselves, you'd get your ass blown up for damn sure. In Fallout 3 you can do what you want to people and you'll still have all the quests available and all the dialogue options there as before. The only thing that can kill your chance to do some of the quests is to massacre entire towns, but nothing short of that will hinder you.
I played FO3 before the other two, and I enjoyed it for a while. I saw that it wasn't as deep as it thought it was, but it's Bethesda so I let it slip, then I searched out Fallout 1 due to recommendations (and No Mutants Allowed.. haha) and realised just how awful FO3 is.

@lambdaman223 I don't think FO3 sucks as a game, but it was not a real Fallout game, since the gameplay is totally different. Also I don't think it is better than FO1 and 2. They both had such sarcastic humor that FO3 will never have, also I prefer FO1 and 2 (also the Tactics' one, which I think had the best battle system) gameplay and battle system. Bethesda eternally sucks for it had ignored FO3 Van Buren project.

@lambdaman223 Black Isle did have some sucess on many games, Buldersgate is one of them. I will say Bethesda is a better company at the time. The Fallout 3 was better marteted however that does not mean it is better. Also Fallout 3 sould more copies as it used the momentum of the two other games. People were waiting for the game and talking about it.
Also just because you are at the time a better at marketing dose not mean your a good Artist. marketing is important however in the art world

The team making Fallout New Vegas is also the team that worked on fallout 1 and 2. So if Fallout 3 is so bad,then why are they making Fallout New Vegas with the same engine they made fallout 3 with? If I am not mistaken, this is Van Buren, the original Fallout 3 which was being made by Black Isle Studios, but they laid off the whole cast and gave the Fallout license to Bethesda

Indeed, Fallout 1 & 2 were some of those games that got an incredible soul, being deep and authentic like no others.
This video shows an atmosphere that is pretty faithful from the original Fallout games. After seing some videos about the original Fallout 3 project, I think it may wouldn't be as good as this project could have been, but would certainly be way better than this Bethesda's Fallout 3 masquerade in all the case...

Played Fallout 1, 2 and 3 including all (original) mods. I must say FO3 is ok and I quite enjoyed to play it. However if it werent for the V.A.T.S. system if would have been nothing else than another farcry, halflife 2 etc etc...
Fallout has... I dont know how to say it... But I think the word "soul" would suit right. It's something unique. Atmosphere, gameplay, grfx, sounds. FO3 has some of it but (to me at least) no more than a sad little wink to the past Fallouts (1 & 2)

It did not only butcher it. It humiliated it, it buried it then raped its corpse. Fallout 1 and 2 were classic rpgs, where you had meaningful choices, witty conversations and serious atmosphere. Fallout 3 is just another run of the mill Bethesda rpg with broken quests and meaningless dialogues. Fallout 1 had no such lapses in quality. That's funny. Patchy AI, glitches galore.
If you're just referring to the voice actors, then of course they didn't have such lapses in quality, because there were around 10 people tops with voice acting in F1.
Also the faces in F3 do make expressions. I'm in a bit of doubt as to whether or not you played it. If you call Dukov's girls whores his face gets angry, and then it goes back to normal, just like the talking heads in F1 and 2.

or hps that get so high by the end of the game every fight is you and a super mutant taking turns shooting rockets at each other until one of you decides to die or combat that is turn-based but has zero tactical flexibility so every fight takes a goddamned hour but you're not doing shit other than shoot, shoot, shoot, reload (fallout tactics actually fixed that but no one played it because it didn't have WALLS OF TEXT) or perks that either made you a god or were completely useless

Fallout 3 sucks ass because you can't min/max a char who can crit to the eyes for 300 damage by level 5 or weapon ranges so short the enemy is in melee range after 1 turn or weapons that follow Diablo style weak-medium-strong-uber progression or retarded useless teammates or rushing the power armor 5 minutes into the game or vague quest objectives or a story that's literally "kill mutants, find water" or skills that you never use or a first aid skill that heals 1 hp at a time

If you were to wander into a post-apocalypse settlement, start telling everyone to go fuck themselves, you'd get your ass blown up for damn sure. In Fallout 3 you can do what you want to people and you'll still have all the quests available and all the dialogue options there as before. The only thing that can kill your chance to do some of the quests is to massacre entire towns, but nothing short of that will hinder you.

I played FO3 before the other two, and I enjoyed it for a while. I saw that it wasn't as deep as it thought it was, but it's Bethesda so I let it slip, then I searched out Fallout 1 due to recommendations (and No Mutants Allowed.. haha) and realised just how awful FO3 is.

Oh really? Try killing anyone in Megaton, and the whole town turns on you. Any quests that may have been available are disabled.

That's what I meant when I said I was talking mainly about Megaton. That's the only town that seems to really be badly affected by you dicking about.

Attack a BOS outcast and they all turn on you. Attack someone in Big Town and they all turn on you. Do good shit and Three Dog will have good things to say about you on the radio. Your actions do have consequences so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

your actions have minor consequences in fallout 1 and 2 your actions made MAJOR changes in the future such as a certain person that would be willing to help you and like you and maybe give you some supplies would hate you and probably stab you and the people turning on you only happens for a short period of time leave wait a day come back and there like "watsup new BFF?" same for everyone im not even sure what your talking about with the outcasts there always friendly and i kill those cunts

I also wrote some letters to Leonard Boyarsdy and Chris Taylor, asking them for this tech demo. It would be a miracle if we could have this just like Van Buren, however, as of yet they haven't replied.
