If anyone had seen this movie before, there was a funny conversation after the video's end. Milch: "If you still want me to review the bombers, and I will not nominate
you as the Generalfeldmarschall, Kesselring." Kesselring: "And, can I finish the
review, marshall?" Milch: "Of course!" Kesselring: "Sir! I hope you enjoy the journey!"
I saw the first public showing of this film in Germany at the RAF 'Astra' cinema at JHQ Rheindahlen ...it was high tech then, but the toy Stuka's are getting a bit obvious now!
I have been watching WWII movies for about forty years now....and lived in Germany for 17 years. And putting the barbarism aside, when I see an intro like this, I can't help thinking what a fucking waste. All that equipment and science just so the klutz krauts can get their nuts caught on every major hurdle. If it wasn't tragic it would be the greatest comedy ever....

this movie reminds me of when my dad and i used to watch this i was to young to really understand the movie but it brings back very good memorys rest in peace dad.
man, I have nothing but the deepest respects for the brits. they really weren't going to give up. They went up against overwhelming odds, and came out on top! Cheers from a proud American to the brave citizens of the Great Britain!
@marvelmax03191 THANK YOU FOR REPLY AND IM VERY PROUD OF MY GREAT GRANDDAD AND GREAT GRANDDAD SEVERING IN BOTH WORLD WARS .....AN YOUR FAMILY IN WW2 I HOPE THIS MESSAGE HELPS THE AMERICAN AND BRITISH RELATIONSHIP GROW STRONGER YEA WE WERE ALONE FOR LITTLE WHILE IN 1939 TO 1942 BUT WE KNEW WE HAD OUR BACKS COVERED LOL
@marvelmax03191 Umm, came out on top? If you mean they came out on top after begging the US and alot of other countries to aid them then yes, they came out on top - Don't forget that GERMANY fought against unbeliavable odds, 60 nations whilst 3-4 of them was super-nations. Aswell as being outnumbered on a bigger scale than 10 to 1
@marvelmax03191 The Germans almost annihilated the British at Dunkirk, and the same goes for the invasion of Greece (eventhough taking big casualties)
@MuchoFunkie I don't recall any mass so called begging to the yanks or any other country at the time of Dunkirk/BOB, don't exaggerate. The RAF defeated the Luftwaffe (i.e. what marvelmax03191 said "came out on top") without any help from the yanks (don't assume I mean we didn't need their help at all because I don't.)
@Anders2185 What the fuck are you talking about? Yeah the Unternehmen Seelöwe was a fucking failure from the side of the German's, not because the Luftwaffe was horrible, actually at this period they were pretty much superior to the RAF. They mainly lost because of the fact that the moment the Luftwaffe pilots took off, they were out of reach for supplies, whereas the RAF had tons of supplies in the nearby areas of London.
@Anders2185 And again, I never said that the British were begging the Americans for support/aid in my previous comment. I said it in a comment long ago, but that comment is in no way related to this or the previous.
The part you don't see is Milch stopping short of entering and inspecting yet another airfield, whereupon he tells Kesselring, "If I have to look at one more bomber, I won't recommend you for promotion." Satisfied that the inspection is concluding so soon, Kesselring replies, "Give my regards to Berlin." A subsequent scene at the Reich Chancellory pairs MIlch with Luftwaffe Chief of Staff Hans Jeschonnek, and introduces Curt Jurgens as Baron von Richter... THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
...General Albert Kesselring, CO of the Second Air Fleet and one other flag-level officer welcome Milch in the name of their respective commands. Milch concludes with "Follow me, gentlemen." As they inspect the first squadron, the command given is "Squadron Attention!" (The men you see lined up before their planes are the actual Spanish air crews who flew the CASA 2111s.) The inspection proceeds at its own pace, with commands of "Stillestande!" dispersed throughout. ...TO BE CONCLUDED
Okay, when the Aces High March begins, the plane you first see is a Junkers Ju-52. Lufthansa used to use them in their airline's fleet. The plane's passenger is Erhard Milch, Hitler's Inspector General. The officers assembled to welcome him include the commanding officers of the Second, Third and Fifth Air Fleets of the Luftwaffe (LUFTFLOTTEN ZWEI, DREI und FUNF.) When Milch debarks the transport, the command given is "Eyes right!" ...TO BE CONTINUED IN A FOLLOWING POST
Hmmm... Now THAT was something I didn't know before.
By the way, have you ever read the book DRESDEN: TUESDAY, FEB. 13., 1945 by Frederick Taylor? At last, an account that sets the record straight! Plenty of historical tidbits to be found here...
Oh yeah... I am quite impressed at your detailed knowledge about this video in relation to the standard procedure carried out by the Luftwaffe and personnel. Keep it up.
The engines of those HE 111 are not Rolls Royce but Hispano -Suiza engines made in Spain . The ME 109 in the movie they are also spanish versions with Hispano engines. The are afectionally called "buchones" in the Spanish Air Force.
The spanish engines are basically copies of the Merlin engines though. The reason they used these aircraft in the movie was because, well, there aren't to many original Me-109s and He-111s flying anymore (especially when this movie was made)
Original German halftracks are hard to come by (trust me, I do reenacting so I know). In this case the producers must have thought that the public would not pay much attention to details like that and so they used whatever they could find.
shit this old movies always using the wrong equipment an m3 halftrack in german hands at that time?? this one is not that bad , they shoud do a movie about the brit asskicking in dieppe brits got wasted there
@VanDiemen2 Yes the VIP arriving at the airfield is Milch, the first officer he shakes hands with after he gets out of the Ju 52 is Kesselring, as Milch says "Danke danke Kesselring" @ 1:46. The second officer Milch shakes hands says "Herr General Milch" @ 1:48 confirming the identity of the new arrival.
Just in case anyone is interested, I think the second officer is referred to as 'Fink', whick would possibly make him General Johannes Fink, commander or KG2 at the time (AFAIK KG545 is fictional).
@VanDiemen2 If you listen to their words Milch arrives by plane and the first person who speaks to him is Kesselring who says (roughly) "I welcome you on behalf of the 2nd Air Fleet"
Surely one of the best military marches ever composed. It has affinities with the 'British Grenadier' but more obviously with the 'Prussiens Gloria'. Between them, the three best.
Hitler never had any real desire to invade France or Britain. The only reason turned west was that France and Britain declared war on him. His real desire was to enslave the Soviet Union.
@EnemyOfTheSystem Yeah the Germans had a better halftrack the Sd.Kfz. 251 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251) to be precise. And the most common German tank in those days where or the Panzer II and III, and none of the German tanks had such a thing as the Grant...*FAKE* But I dont mind:-) BTW, Love the SONG!
@EnemyOfTheSystem It is an M 7 "Priest" SP Artillery usually with a 1`05mm Howitzer, they redressed it to be a German Tank, but the experts can tell this one without even straining themselves...The pulpit with the MG is a dead give-away!!
@EnemyOfTheSystem The tank looks more like a M-24 Chafee made up to look like a self-propelled gun. (The casings on the lower front hull, the driver hatch, the large glacis transmission cover and distinct V- shaped tracks are marks of the M-24)
Well, the poster of this clip says it was "composed for the movie" - in case you're thinking it's being presented as the Luftwaffe's actual march. I think it's amazing how well Goodwin captured a German military feel with the piece. It just wouldn't work for RAF, RCAF, USAAF, or any other ally!
Pretty catchy, tho', if you like martial music... 8-)
@daideluxe Wikipedia is your friend^^: "For the opening theme, Goodwin composed the Aces High March in the style of a traditional German military march in 2/4 time" this is not a real Luftwaffe march, sorry
