  • Tragic that they are no longer flying

  • Please reupload without music

  • @killjoy2k2 Here Here !

  • @killjoy2k2 this + higher quality :)

  • @Polaris688, Flt Lt Mike Hale took one to 88000 ft during a NATO exercise in 1984 by doing a ballistic climb, and intercepted a U2,

  • Good vid - pity about the 'music'.........

  • Thank you for the correction.

  • Wow! That has got to be the ugliest thing in the world; makes Russian jets almost look elegant in comparison.

  • @csvjd You think so? This jet is COLD WAR era, this is what kept the Russians away from the UK. British built, years old and still one of the fastest fighter jets in the world. Way ahead of its time back in the day. Basically 2 seats bolted to 2 huge afterburning engines, yeah she's ugly but she kept UK airspace safe and sound :)

  • @bazman85 I've since caught up on some of the documentation. I wonder how she would have fared against the Russians--by all accounts it was fast and powerful--no dispute. On the downside--please correct me if I'm wrong--she was woefully under armed (no gun...!), only two missiles of dubious capability and extremely short ranged.

That said--will retract my earlier comment--I did see a photo of a SAAB (tunnen?) That is the ugliest aircraft in the world.

  • @csvjd I believe the idea of the lightning was to be airborne and into the skys as quickly as possible as to not let the Russians anywhere near missile launch range of the UK. I do believe it was underarmed also, but this was a kinda "bluff" ......just to let the ruskies know we could get in the air and on their ass very quicky :) in actual combat i don't know what exactly she would have performed like, and thank god it never happend.

  • @csvjd Guns depends on the version ... IIRC, early versions had 2x 30mm in the nose. Late versions had 2x 30mm in the ventral tank. Somewhere in the middle there where versions with no guns, and possibly (never really seen this confirmed) the possibility of 4x 30mm (i.e. an early version with the nose guns, fitted with the late model ventral tank).

  • @csvjd from some angles its fugly from others its awesome looking

  • awesome... thanks for putting this up.. I would love to see that in person!

  • Thanx.

  • all seems well good video!!
