i don't understand why Death Magnetic has such a shitty tone quality, but World Painted Blood sounds perfectly. I mean, both bands worked with Fidelmann and Rubin...

The point of the loudness war is because the record companies want to forcefully make the tracks stand out on the radio compared to non-loudness war tracks. Are you more likely to notice an incredibly loud song, or a quiet song? See what I mean?

@ToaJoe If the mixing is done correctly you should not lose most of the tone quality because you just compress the sh*t out of the track so that there is only like 5dB of movement (sometimes less) then you sit the track (guitar) right on the edge of the head room or if you want to beat that one band who was louder than your last album you push it just a bit into the headroom creating a new status quo
