I used to produce electronic music on a Mac, but it limited me because the price to performance ratio was much lower than just building your own. Recently I built my own pc, and it's so much faster due to its 6 core processor and 8 gb of ram. I can have about 30 vst, sampler, and audio tracks tracks running at once without any overruns or annoying sound clicks. Making music is very faxing on your computer, so make sure you get a good Mac, or built your own for cheaper and preformes just as well.
its not really WHAT it does (you can do most of the same things on either a mac or pc), but HOW its done osx looks better and is simpler to use through things like launchpad & mission control (there's more but those are the major well known ones)
@mikrosha Build quality depends on the company and to be honest unless the quality is horrible I don't really mind. I prefer Windows 7 to OS X, OS X just doesn't have all the software I need and I'm probably in the minority but it freezes too much for my liking.
@eateroftheflame well lets put it this way, i do not know of a single desktop/all in one/laptop that is built in a nicer, more sexy, organized, sturdy way then the line of Macs. I mean, by now the Asus, Samsung, Dell, HP are trying hard to look like the macbook air and sometimes the pro, but they don't really make the best looking machines, nor do they feel like quality in your hands. OS X has all the apps but some games, and that can be fixed via bootcamp... :)
@mikrosha I have used quite a few Macs and I really don't see what the fuss about their build quality is, my main laptop is an Acer and it doesn't feel very different other than being bulkier. There's more than just games that are missing, I just don't really care for paying premium prices for a Mac when I'm going to need bootcamp for alot of the programmes I want.
My pc renders video as fast as a mac pro :) and its alot cheaper :P i dont care wtf ppl use i like both, but i've always had pc, and that is what im gonna stay with
@TheSilentWindow True, but if you work/ or want to work in the media sector (i'm in college - media student) you'll need a mac anyways. Like he said any professional company that involves media uses macs.
@Caelistas I completely understand that, but for me pc is just a lot cheaper, and its a really good alternative :) And i really like macs user interface it looks really cool :)
mac's are better than PC's cus they are HARD to put viruses in (do not reply) and they do have a better bigger faster operating system and they are better for allot of things and a big variety of good fun games so i go with a Mac
@thegasjunke mac's better than pc because of its design and built quality. moreover, the interplay between hardware and software makes it more reliable machine. its intuitive interface lets average joe focus on what's more important to him, ie his work. adding appstore to the equation would just make it more desireable and fun to work with. the apple ecosystem makes everybody in the industry envy. and its competitor's trying to emulate what apple does but they all fail very badly.
@MrJbchow mac is build on the top of bsd-unix. unix is famous for heavy duty computing, eg high performance computing. yes, mac is for you. my collaborators at cern, doing lhc experiment (atlas n cms group) either use pc running linux/freebsd (in control room) or mac.
Ok you can get an awesome windows laptop .... and not go completely broke .... You wont always find a mac in a recording studio .... also did you really have to get the ugliest windows computer you could find? They are both PCS ..... one is windows and one is mac ..... get it right .... and plus .... im sorry apple is a ridiculous company and they will stab you in the back and take all your money
I have a 27 inch imac i7 3.40GHZ with SSD 16GB ram 2GB video ram custom fitted with blueray drive. And to top it i had it painted burnt orange by AJDA automotives, which are know for painting ferrari's and lamborghini's in saudi arabia...So i can browse the net and send occasional e-mails, havent used any PS or other hardcore softwares, DNT WANT TO STRESS OUT MY MAC, am not kidding and i love my imac
These people comparing a super PC or whatever to a Mac, try comparing a PC to a 12 core Mac pro! It is the god of computers. But, for gaming it's good to have Alienware computer. But other than that I would be into Mac pro.
If your computer freezes and is as slow as a tortoise you need to go back to go back to computers 101 and learn how to treat a machine to make it durable and eficient. You really have to be a very careless person to turn your PC into a piece of junk.
If you are new to the music production world, read this: I run pro tools on a monster PC and it get's the job done. I don't get any viruses, as a matter of fact I don't use an anti-virus program, its anoying. As far as final cut, I don't know about that. But if you know your specs and what kind of PC you are getting you can do music production with no problem. You save $ on a PC that you can invest on other gear like mics, etc. That's what I did. Now if you can afford a Mac, go 4 it.
Why get a PC and download Linux then with Linux you'll be like I can do anything now! So, you'll get a virus BUT if you get a Mac you WON'T get a virus BUT it's EXTREMLEY UNCOMMON to get a virus on a Mac.
The coding guys I know prefer Linux with VIM, but that's dependent on two things; 1. What you can afford. 2. What environment you like to code in. I live in a poverty-stricken county, so #1 is most likely the issue, and since Linux is free...you get the point. Same thing can be said for end users, some people prefer PC's others prefer MAC's, it depends on which technology can suit your wants and needs.
and in relation to the virus debate rason Mac / linux / unix is not vunrable to viruses is to do with permissions and rate of patch releases ,ms windows arch makes it vun to viruses
haha yeah well that "Windows rugged latop" is worth a shit load more than that mac haha , microsoft windows = more compatible for well hardware , Mac = stuck in a mac world , Linux .deb/.rpm= reliable , free and well make old hardware useable again ;)
@ciainthehouse or from faulty files or from virsuses created by the distributor.PCs and macs also fuck up,because keygens and cracks...are not viruses....the type that is used for torrents anyways.
OSX operating system isnt susceptible 2 the thousands of plaguing windows-based pc&no computer connected 2the internet is completely immune 2 all viruses&spyware.OSX has built in defenses design with ur safety in mind the mac web browser safari alerts u whenever ur downloadin an application even if its disguised as a picture move file.Apple continually makes free security updates available 4mac owners u can even hav them download automatically so its not Bcuz of written more viruses MR. Wise guy
As a professional designer and developer (code monkey) my opinion:
I use a Windows desktop at home, mostly for gaming and general web use. I built it myself and its a beast. I love it. For work I use Mac. The OS is more streamlined for the type of work I do, in my experience, and there are Mac specific applications that I use every day that I prefer to Windows alternatives.
Lastly, hardware and specs aren't everything. Software and industrial design are equally important to me.
That my be, but as a custom-builder, you should also know that components play a vital role in streamlining work efficiency. Time is money. I would never dream of rendering a heavy Trapcode Form comp on a Mac, as it simply can't keep up with a custom-built rendering rig which would be far ahead of the Mac for the same price point.
Yes, it may be easier to use a Mac for particular things, but that's due entirely to personal preference. It can all be done faster on a PC.
@bethluvshermeeko Generally for any kind of graphics work you want the highest resolution screen you can get your hands on - so, a bigger screen is usually best. The reason is because while working with Photoshop or similar you will a lot of the time be working on larger files, images or designs and extra space for toolbars and palettes is always welcome.
Source: Worked as a designer and developer at several software companies.
In that case, you're going to want to invest in Dell UltraSharp or NEC monitors, both of which are vastly inferior to Mac displays in color correctness, gamut and contrast ratios.
I'm sorry, but Apple displays are a distant third when they go up against Dell UltraSharps and NEC monitors, with superior display technologies. If you were a designer, then this should be common knowledge to you.
@MaestroDraven "...both of which are vastly inferior to Mac displays in color correctness, gamut and contrast ratios."
^ Maybe you made a mistake but you just said they were inferior. Regardless, the guy was asking which size Mac to go for, but hey, thanks for trying to make me feel like shit anyways.
This is an excellent comparison video. Very thorough, very unbiased. I have a Mac because I'm a comp sci/digital arts student, and will probably be using various types of production software in later classes. However, I also really enjoy DIY-type work and projects, and have always been just as comfortable using a PC. Someday I'd like to build my own desktop so I can play games on it, because Macs really do have a lame gaming repertoire.
@MercuryClock windows personal computers can also do what u said u can do with the mac in your specific application areas... this is just marketing from apple.. to differentiate their products.. make it sound hifi..the same things can be configured in windows personal computers just as you can do it in mac os personal computers
I know that PCs can be used for media production. The thing is, if you're studying that particular field or working in it professionally, you don't exactly get to choose what platform you'll be using (usually). My school has a digital arts lab for things like photo editing and animation, and an editing lab for film students. Both labs use Macs only. If you're using FCP and Soundtrack Pro to edit a class project, then owning a Windows computer with Avid Studio won't help you much.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't investigate alternatives. I hold no brand loyalty, and neither should you, even if you were weened on a particular product. Final Cut Pro is just fine, but Avid and Premiere Pro are more widely used by the industry. It may, or may not be your cup of tea, but generally there's a reason why they're more accepted. Same with DAWs. I started off using FL Studio, then jumped to Ableton, and I haven't looked back since.
@MaestroDraven I agree that people should avoid being loyal to specific brands (probably my number one peeve regarding Apple users in general) and explore their other options when they can. Sometimes, though, exploring other options isn't the easiest or most convenient thing to do, especially when it requires an operating system you aren't using. It's also a bit pricey if you want non-demo software, which I'm very paranoid about pirating compared to music or movies.
@techtomorrow i have a hp is that a pc because i bought a hp at tiger direct and i have a hp desk top and my dad thinks a apple better but he cant aford a a apple so is hp is the best to get for my dad to choose because he has a old hp computer

I'm a hardcore minecrafter, and here is my thoughts.
Minecraft on a mac is slow. It is hard to install mods and texture packs. Supreme FPS Drops when recording with mac.
MInecraft on a PC Is fast. It is easy to install mods and texture packs. When recording, it is not slow. The FPS Is still in the 50-210 range.
PCs, you have a choice in hand. There are- Gaming PCs and Everyday computing PCs, with mac, Expensive and, Again, slow. I say over-all, a PC Is the diamond sword of all computers.
you dont know what our talking about, you can do the exact same thing on a pc that you would do on a mac and much more for half the price, its a delusion to say "oh only film editors use macs for the final cut pro, you cant do it on a pc" what utter crap, have you ever heard of avid that was used to edit terminator 2 3 and terminator 4 films, avatar, iron man1 and 2 and The Walking Dead. How do i know all this its because i am a professional Avid editor.
Not all recording studios use Macs.... I used Macs and PCs in my studio and I've been to lots of nice studios with Pro Tools running on Windows 7 or XP. I mix in a studio on a Logic Rig for a friend and I have more problems than when I mix on my Lenovo, Win7 and Pro Tools 9. I like macs but I mix for hours into the night on this Win7 laptop and I always have to tweak Logic and the Apogee hardware which is mac owned.
Anyhow, Macs now have the same Intel architecture that IBM Compatibles have had since the 1970's. So now they do not have that unique graphical advantage. Please stop spreading false information regarding the differences between the same exact architectures. Thank You.
A Mac is a PC! All "PC" stands for is "Personal Computer." Unless the Mac is a mainframe, mini, or super computer, it's probably a micro computer (ie. PERSONAL COMPUTER).
PC's do not excel at gaming. Gaming companies excel at windows coding. But even now, games are being written for Mac to. I.e., everything on steam.
Mac has the same options through boot camp. I don't get how you say PC has more options. Sure it has more hardware options, but that will never change your software options.
450 dollar PC's normally suck and die quickly, unlike a long lasting 1,000 dollar computer.
@rifall Have you actually looked at Steam's library on a Mac? It's WAY more limited. You've got Valve's more well-known titles like Portal, Half-Life, TF2 and L4D. You've got all the cute little casual indie games that are in the $5-15 range. There are some other games, but for the most part that's it. And let's be honest, Bootcamp isn't exactly an optimal solution considering the time it takes and the fact that you have to partition your hard drive (which is not a decision to be taken lightly).
I agree with almost everything stated in this video for the most part, except for the statement which claims PC's are not as good for Recording softwares. I make a decent living working with audio recording and mixing software on PC without having problems. It is more about your DSP management than your audio quality. Saying "Macs are more popular in recording studios therefore they are better" is like saying "PCs are better for checking your email, because home computers are more popular"
@illutionillution the variety of professional level audio applications on macs though drove me to get a mac. i have used sonar, logic, cubase, record/reason, pro tools etc. and i always go for the mac. even for ones like pro tools, despite being available on both, i find work best on a mac. finally, mac simply are built for media and have a better sound card, layout, OS etc. for the job. I am not against PCs and have used one for years however i just find macs better for the job
@98GuitarTECH I am not sure if I understand. You say that they 'work better' on a mac. Why? How? You didn't really say anything besides the fact that "Macs have better sound cards". Better than what? PC sound cards? How do you know what sound card is in what pc. That doesn't make any sense. Besides, any audio professional is going to be using a external sound card made from a third party hardware company. I am still confused why macs are better for audio software.Define how it 'works better' pls
@illutionillution Macintosh motherboards are highly optimized for encoding videos and sound. Chances are, the applications will crash less, and even run faster if the writer knows what they're doing.
@rifall But you can also buy motherboards for PC that are equally optimized for video and sound. I mean, it is all about what parts you buy to build the car you are looking for. You can buy a car that is an all around great machine (mac) or you can build your own unique car of equal or higher quality mechanical parts (PC) At the end of the day, it is all about how you build the machine. Also, I have found that working with audio software on macs, it crashed at least 3 times more often.
I can not really say anything about mac never had money to buy one. Also I live in a poor contry called Serbia where people use Pc because if cheeper.Would love to try mac so if anybody wants to give away mac would love to try one. :)))))

@mikrosha Build quality depends on the company and to be honest unless the quality is horrible I don't really mind. I prefer Windows 7 to OS X, OS X just doesn't have all the software I need and I'm probably in the minority but it freezes too much for my liking.
eateroftheflame 3 days ago
@eateroftheflame well lets put it this way, i do not know of a single desktop/all in one/laptop that is built in a nicer, more sexy, organized, sturdy way then the line of Macs. I mean, by now the Asus, Samsung, Dell, HP are trying hard to look like the macbook air and sometimes the pro, but they don't really make the best looking machines, nor do they feel like quality in your hands. OS X has all the apps but some games, and that can be fixed via bootcamp... :)
mikrosha 3 days ago
@mikrosha I have used quite a few Macs and I really don't see what the fuss about their build quality is, my main laptop is an Acer and it doesn't feel very different other than being bulkier. There's more than just games that are missing, I just don't really care for paying premium prices for a Mac when I'm going to need bootcamp for alot of the programmes I want.

@thegasjunke if you have common sense you wont get viruses but apparently you are just some 11 year old kid with mac. And your mac laggggggs
AnAcidCake 1 week ago
@thegasjunke mac's better than pc because of its design and built quality. moreover, the interplay between hardware and software makes it more reliable machine. its intuitive interface lets average joe focus on what's more important to him, ie his work. adding appstore to the equation would just make it more desireable and fun to work with. the apple ecosystem makes everybody in the industry envy. and its competitor's trying to emulate what apple does but they all fail very badly.

Now if you can afford a Mac, go 4 it.
zevasthian 1 week ago
Why get a PC and download Linux then with Linux you'll be like I can do anything now! So, you'll get a virus BUT if you get a Mac you WON'T get a virus BUT it's EXTREMLEY UNCOMMON to get a virus on a Mac.
ablazpommonster 1 week ago
@ablazpommonster Only very 'stupid' people get viruses, people who download porn movies or weird stuff.
zevasthian 1 week ago
The coding guys I know prefer Linux with VIM, but that's dependent on two things; 1. What you can afford. 2. What environment you like to code in. I live in a poverty-stricken county, so #1 is most likely the issue, and since Linux is free...you get the point. Same thing can be said for end users, some people prefer PC's others prefer MAC's, it depends on which technology can suit your wants and needs.

Genowulf 2 weeks ago
@Genowulf
It can all be done faster on a PC.

what size mac screen would you say is best for photoshop users? does it really matter?
bethluvshermeeko 2 weeks ago
@bethluvshermeeko Generally for any kind of graphics work you want the highest resolution screen you can get your hands on - so, a bigger screen is usually best. The reason is because while working with Photoshop or similar you will a lot of the time be working on larger files, images or designs and extra space for toolbars and palettes is always welcome.

In that case, you're going to want to invest in Dell UltraSharp or NEC monitors, both of which are vastly inferior to Mac displays in color correctness, gamut and contrast ratios.
MaestroDraven 2 weeks ago
@MaestroDraven Why would you want inferior color display, etc?
Genowulf 2 weeks ago

I'm sorry, but Apple displays are a distant third when they go up against Dell UltraSharps and NEC monitors, with superior display technologies. If you were a designer, then this should be common knowledge to you.

OK, so are you saying that PCs are for kids (for gamers) and Macs are for professionals (skilled designers)?
jorge091167 2 weeks ago
This is an excellent comparison video. Very thorough, very unbiased. I have a Mac because I'm a comp sci/digital arts student, and will probably be using various types of production software in later classes. However, I also really enjoy DIY-type work and projects, and have always been just as comfortable using a PC. Someday I'd like to build my own desktop so I can play games on it, because Macs really do have a lame gaming repertoire.
MercuryClock 2 weeks ago
@MercuryClock windows personal computers can also do what u said u can do with the mac in your specific application areas... this is just marketing from apple.. to differentiate their products.. make it sound hifi..the same things can be configured in windows personal computers just as you can do it in mac os personal computers
jokingvikash 2 weeks ago
@jokingvikash
MercuryClock 2 weeks ago
@MercuryClock
MaestroDraven 2 weeks ago
@MaestroDraven I agree that people should avoid being loyal to specific brands (probably my number one peeve regarding Apple users in general) and explore their other options when they can. Sometimes, though, exploring other options isn't the easiest or most convenient thing to do, especially when it requires an operating system you aren't using. It's also a bit pricey if you want non-demo software, which I'm very paranoid about pirating compared to music or movies.

A Mac is a PC! All "PC" stands for is "Personal Computer." Unless the Mac is a mainframe, mini, or super computer, it's probably a micro computer (ie. PERSONAL COMPUTER).
ImoenOfTelengard 3 weeks ago
You did not give ONE valid reason why MAC is better for multimedia/video.
jdfeos 3 weeks ago
Mac Mini, now 699, not 1,000 dollars.
PC's do not excel at gaming. Gaming companies excel at windows coding. But even now, games are being written for Mac to. I.e., everything on steam.
Mac has the same options through boot camp. I don't get how you say PC has more options. Sure it has more hardware options, but that will never change your software options.
450 dollar PC's normally suck and die quickly, unlike a long lasting 1,000 dollar computer.
rifall 3 weeks ago

Saying "Macs are more popular in recording studios therefore they are better" is like saying "PCs are better for checking your email, because home computers are more popular"
illutionillution 3 weeks ago
@illutionillution the variety of professional level audio applications on macs though drove me to get a mac. i have used sonar, logic, cubase, record/reason, pro tools etc. and i always go for the mac. even for ones like pro tools, despite being available on both, i find work best on a mac. finally, mac simply are built for media and have a better sound card, layout, OS etc. for the job. I am not against PCs and have used one for years however i just find macs better for the job
98GuitarTECH 3 weeks ago
@98GuitarTECH I am not sure if I understand. You say that they 'work better' on a mac. Why? How? You didn't really say anything besides the fact that "Macs have better sound cards". Better than what? PC sound cards? How do you know what sound card is in what pc. That doesn't make any sense. Besides, any audio professional is going to be using a external sound card made from a third party hardware company. I am still confused why macs are better for audio software.Define how it 'works better' pls
illutionillution 3 weeks ago
@illutionillution Macintosh motherboards are highly optimized for encoding videos and sound. Chances are, the applications will crash less, and even run faster if the writer knows what they're doing.
rifall 3 weeks ago
@rifall But you can also buy motherboards for PC that are equally optimized for video and sound. I mean, it is all about what parts you buy to build the car you are looking for. You can buy a car that is an all around great machine (mac) or you can build your own unique car of equal or higher quality mechanical parts (PC) At the end of the day, it is all about how you build the machine. Also, I have found that working with audio software on macs, it crashed at least 3 times more often.
