9- pagan wives. normal(not allowed unless muslim woman or christian or jewish), mot'aah(no limitation)

I'll list some differences between a normal marriage and a mot'aa marriage:

1- inheritance. normal(Yes), mot'aa(No)

2- guardian. normal(yes the woman can not give herself away, her guardian must), mot'aa(no need)

3- period. normal(Not specified, intention is permanence), mot'aa(MUST be specified)

4- witnesses/publicity. normal(MUST be public or 2 witnesses), mot'aa (not required)

5- providence. normal(husband MUST provide shelter/food unless wife declines), mot'aa (wife must ask before)

Let me also point out that even among shia, they themselves differentiate between a normal marriage and a mot'aa/seegha marriage. in their own laws the two types have different rights.

Ask any shia scholar this: if a man marries a woman by mot'aa, then suddenly dies before the agreed period is done, does the woman get full inheritance rights like a normal wife?

I looked into this and found that she does not.

ok let me clarify then. you said "the same rules apply". The mistake here is that in sunni marriage it's not allowed to agree on a period and put it in the marriage certificate, nor is it allowed to agree on it verbally prior to the marriage.

This does not mean that divorce is a sin. Not at all. and I'm not trying to imply that. Divorce is definitely is not desirable. but not a sin. it's fully permissible. but it also should not be decided before marriage either.

Temporary marriage (mot'aa) is part of the shia version of Islam. where the period of the marriage ,and payment are agreed. and usually not celebrated or publicized to family.

in sunni view it is equivalent to prostitution and is a major sinful act. adultery or fornication in short.

even among the majority of shia people I know this type of marriage (they call it seegha) is extremely looked down upon as lowly.

Yet it is an integral part of the shia creed unfortunately

@mishari26 Many shias carry out seegha/mot'aa the wrong way. There are many rules that they have to follow and they disregard. Unfortunately this is what led sunnis to perceive it as sinful. My sunni friends approached me to ask me about mot'aa and after discussing it we realized that mot'aa is almost exactly like misyar marriage, which is a part of the sunni "version" of Islam. This documentary is a perfect example of how Islam is misinterpreted. Ppl are using the Qur'an to justify their sins.

@ZumbaJambini hi, thanks for the comment :) I just want to clarify that marriage in Islam is meant to secure the future of any children that may result from it. This is the reason that temporary marriage "mot'aa/seegha" is considered not a valid marriage under sunni law.

in marriage an essential element of the marriage is the "dowry". which has to be paid by the man to the woman. This dowry in seegha is directly related to the agreed period. smaller period, smaller payment.clearly prostitution

This means that just like a permanent marriage the woman is entitled to a dowry not based on the period of time like you said. The dowry does not have to be money but anything of value. Also, when the period of marriage ends the woman has to go through the Iddah and if a child results from the marriage he/she have the same rights as a child from a regular marriage.

@mishari26 when I said "exactly like" I didn't mean it in the literal sense. I meant that the same rules apply. The happiness of the child is based on how the parents handle the situation not on what type of marriage. After the contract period is over the parents have the option of remarrying (Temporary/Permanent). You also have to keep in mind that this type of marriage is permissible but not necessarily encouraged.

Or what about children who's father's have married more than one woman. The emotional state of the child depends on how the parents handle it.
