  • this song makes me wet!

  • "Baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me

Today I need something more sub-sub-sub-substantial

A can of beans or black-eyed peas, some Nescafe and ice

A candy bar, a falling star, or a reading from Doctor Seuss" <3

This song is so cheerful and so sad at the same time. The perfect combo not to leave you crying your heart out, haha.

  • @Snowyseasons sorry to be pedantic but, 'more sub-stud-sub-substantial'

  • as a kid i always used to think of the Taz-mania theme tune when i heard this song

  • @ZeldaFoxEars yes and in the inlay cover of the album he thanx who ever done that song i cant remember who they wer

  • @ZeldaFoxEars yeh its based on that song, the lion sleeps tonight is on the B-side to this song.

  • MUSICMAN your 2 rem songs are the two of the very very best, well done sir

  • No, it is infringement. Before people post they should try learning something. What a putz.

  • WHY IS THE TOP COMMENT THE WRONG LYRICS!!!!!!!!!!! come on people.

  • i used to think it was kywin Chawaka.

  • call me when you try to wake her up (whatever)....but great song.

  • I always thought it was "According to Bakerhurst".

  • There's no way he can be saying "Call me if you try to wake her up" in the chorus.

  • "Tell her she can kiss my ass, then laugh & say that you were only kidding"

  • i know im gonna get hate from this comment but this song is better than ''Everybody Hurts''!!!!

  • @Ps3KILLZYOU No hate from me. This is my favourite song of all time. Its impossibly good.

  • I personally always used to think it said 'Calling Cheryl Baker..' :/

  • Derp. That's not the definition of fair use.

  • I always thought it was "Come in try wake her up." but I remember as kids, me and my brother used to sing "Tony the baker man".

  • ,,Count and shout - ,,Wake up!,,

  • Doesn't he say 'calling shall wake her up, then calling shall wake her'? Anyways, I love this song so much! It always reminds me of my parents, seens as thier huge REM fans, and this song reminds me of happy times! :)... Though the lyrics are seriously strange lol :)

  • That the way! :D @Flyboy243

  • "Baby, instant soup doesn't really grab me today" has to be one of the odder lines in popular music history. Always sticks in my head forever after I listen to this.

  • @yohei72 I often wonder if the reason Michael Stipe laughs after that part is the realisation striking him that the line is so absurd.

  • @pxe the reason he laughs in this song is cos he cant say the words dr.seuss properly

  • @yohei72 I thought it was "Baby, eat some soup..."

  • @yohei72 seems like a solid lyric to me doesnt seem odd from rem

  • @yohei72

"A can of beans or black-eyed peas, some Nescafe and ice A candy bar, a falling star, or a reading from Doctor Seuss" is what replays in my head all day.

  • I laughed when I found out this song contains the most misheard lyric in Britain. Apparently half of the people in the survey thought Michael was singing "Calling Jamaica"

  • This is Michael Stipe here! I am saying 'Don't even try and wake her up, don't even try and wake her up...Call me when you try and wake her up and so on! The sidewinder sleeps tonight. Although I do like "Cheryl Baker'! I went to middle school with her!
