I'm learning this beautiful piece right now for my Grade 7 exam! It's been tough to learn, but worth it! My teacher insists that the piece is more like Grade 8, especially the 2nd and 3rd pages. And those rolled/arpeggiated chords on the last page are real killers! All worth it though. I often love these little minature pieces by the master's, they're so under appreciated and often forgotten about. But this piece is so beautiful, it expresses both melancholy and happiness at the same time.
for the last chord its kind of silly but I just do the E and B left hand then G and E right hand then left hand under and plays the treble G and E then right hand over and the last G and B. It gives me a cleaner glissando and faster, and, it's funner :)
Bahaha, I knew you were joking about that. But I never knew about that system. I usually try to learn anything I like, despite the difficulty. Anyway, thanks..
This is on the grade seven syllabus for 2011-2012. 'lavamaster530' : this I wouldnt think would be a grade five. I've just done my grade six and the pieces werent this hard. i think this is absoloutly grade seven - it has the challenges of using rubato to full effect, the sheer skill of thos octave chord-jumps (that somene of grade 5 wouldnt be capable of, yet) , but still is relatively short and simple in design.
Can somebody tell me a clear difference between nocturnes and romances? I heard some romances which sounded like nocturnes and noct. which sounded like romances..
out of all of liszts great pieces, id have to say this is one of my favorites. isnt it funny how simple a song may be, besides emotion/interpretation, can also be one of the best?
@DiabolicoMephisto I think the pianist is Jenő Jandó (It was written in the video description originally, but apparently removed). Anyways, it's not Leslie Howard. In my opinion, this is better than Howard's interpretation, which is also on YouTube.
I like this piece but I don't think I have the skill to play it yet, I decided to start with Nuages Gris but I hope I'm not in over my head. Need to learn at least 1 Liszt piece for now.
@RemovdSande11 it is not a grade with numbers but the grade of high musical expression and output. please do not go by the grade numbers. most of them are very inaccurate.
'ABRSM' is (in Britain at least) the 'Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music'
It's the main authority for grading on most classical instruments, and as part of the piano exam, you must learn a selection of pieces from a repertoire they publish for each grade. Every couple of years has a different repertoire, so more pieces are 'graduated' as time goes on, but they don't do it just for fun.
@RemovdSande11 It depends on how you are motivated to play this piece of music. But in my opinion, if you really want to play this piece of music, you will succeed.
@Hexameron perfect .... translation DAM YO GOOD usually im a hater .. on lots of videos BUT YOU ARE A MUSICAL TRANSLATOR !!!!!!!!!!!! exactly what i was thinking !!!!!!!!
I think you are an imbesile. Romance is not about happiness it is about breif moments of happiness and then sadness so the only time you would use a major chord would be for a shift.
Wow this piece sounds a similar to Chopin's style, especially the beginning, until about 1:00, when he puts that one chord in, that I hear in most of his "soft" pieces.
That's right ! His "Consolations" and some later works are not very hard to play. Anyway, independantly from the complexity of this work, I find it strange that his style evolved so quickly within three years ! So, for me, if not "strange" it is definitely "surprising" ;-)
By the way, I have listened to your Paganini transcription : WOW ! The work + the interpretation are stunning !
Aha, now I see your point! :D But if you see his douze grand etudes, they were published 15 years before, and that´s very complex. But I see your point :)
"all his pieces" includes over 600 compositions and quite a few are accessible to the beginner and intermediate. Many of his late piano works are not that technically difficult, but require interpretative wisdom.
i mean, of course, chopin must had written smtg more difficult, at least one composition.. but i think, liszt has more technical challenges than chopin..
i know that liszt wrote more than 600+ and a lot of later works (transcriptions) and etc that many to most people aren't familiar of (unless u study music).. but, so far, that i've encountered from both well-known works, i find that liszts' are more difficult..
I got to sight-read this piece. It´s very easy. I can´t believe people study it fot 7th grade !!!

Admittedly not the hardest in the book, but trying to capture the full extent of the emotion is a challenge.
