I'm almost done reading this book and the hardest part is coming to the end of the book. But this book has taught me so many life lessons. I love what Enzo says about LISTENING! How he breaks it down about humans not listening. What a great book Garth. Thank you!
I am not a dog lover, nor a racing fan, but this book... this book was AMAZING!! I can honestly say it changed my way of thinking... BIG time. Looooved it.
This is a wonderful story, but as far as the writing goes--well, it's not exactlyat the New York Times best seller list level. It's predictable and has a very pedestrian formula for providing the 'obstacle' in the way of the hero's success. Never-the-less, how could anyone not love a story about a thinking and understanding dog? If there is such a thing as reincarnation (truly doubtful) then I know why I love dogs so much--I must have been one in a previous life!
Loved the book, front to back. Inspirational and heartwarming.Go Enzo Go! PS: It was Paul who came up with the ethereal "and in the end...the love you take...is equal to the love, you make.
I just finished this book today it was so good!! My friends at school thought i was weird reading a book about a dog but i just ignored them. i couldnt put this book down. i hope to read more of Garths books!!
I just finished this book today, it was SO good. i want to read more of Garth's books!! My friends at school thought i was weird for reading a book about a dog telling a story but i ignored them and read it!! i couldnt put it down espically cuz im a dog lover. i hope this movie comes out!! i love enzo!!
Garth gets the checkered flag for this incredible novel. I've purchased 8 copies of this book for friends who are either racing and/or dog lovers. I hope they learn something from this book and up their game LOL!
It's a wonderful book but hard for me to summarize -- there is even a bit of The Alchemist to it -- the book trailer is also wonderful. I recommend reading and taking from it what you find from your own experience.
I'm so glad I was able to see this interview and had the chance to read what everyone thought about the novel, because it's honestly one of the most original, unique and impressionable books I've ever read. All the things I've learned from it has kept me motivated, grateful, and determined to be a better person. Just wanted to say this Enzo's story has a special place in my heart, and I'm glad so many people feel the same way : ) Thanks Garth Stein!
A friend recommended I read this book as I am facing having to euthanize my beautiful, wonderful loving Gracie because she has cancer in her lower mandible. I got the book and read it. I was in the final pages where Enzo is running in the grass and looking back at Denny and I was in my doctor's office -- where they put you and seem to forget you -- when he walked in. I was bawling like a baby and he looked at me and was shocked. I explained what was going on and we sat and talked about our dogs.
I am in the middle of the book at this very moment and am totally intrigued by it and thoroughly enjoying it.
I also am looking at my 11 year old beagle in a whole different light. Maybe there's a heck of a lot more going on up there than I give him credit for.
This book goes to the top of my list as my all time favorite. I couldn't put it down. I laughed and I cried. It takes a great author to bring out those emotions in a reader. I look forward to reading it again and again.
A friend gave me this book after my last track day at Pacific Raceways, which is what hooked me on it. It was one of the best reads I have ever enjoyed. Thank you Garth, and Enzo!!
One word: amazing. But it is an insult to say that pretty much sums the book up, because it doesn't - I don't think there is a single word that can explain how wonderful a read this is. Enzo is a fantastic narrator; I do often find myself looking at my dog thinking, 'I wonder...' or saying, "Maya - are you my Enzo?"
This book does something most books haven't done in a long time - it makes me curious. It makes me pose questions: 'Was I once a dog?' - 'What IS that mutt thinking?' Great read.
I listened to this book three times. This book is so wonderful and has so much to convey about life and love. It is absolutely haunting. I am grateful that I got to read this book.
I could not put this book down. Read it in one day. Enzo is wonderful and this book is a pleasure to read. And yes... I cried. Twice... (Read it. you'll know where and why...)
I just started reading the book...its the coolest thing I have seen since "Call of the Wild" or "Going Faster" by Skip Barber. Peter Egan's Road and Track review pointed me to it. Thanks!!!!
Weeped and wailed like a baby. I was pathetic. Thanks though. Terrific work.

All Ican say is thank you for writing this. A true perspective, I believe, of what a dog experiences in this life.
