My 120gb drive died, bought a new wd one I know it correct model,

In mean time I used an old 20gb one, if I fit 120 in place of broken one, can I skip the PC xplorer stuff and use my official transfare cable? I'm not sure what the cable does if it formats or just copy.... thanks

@RavenholmHunter The Xbox 360 only supports HDD's up to 250GB of space so it won't work with a 500GB HDD. Depending on when the Xbox or Xbox HDD was purchased will depend on what SATA revision it is. Most likely II

@RavenholmHunter SATA III might even work, if there are any HDD's with SATA III. My Xbox came with a supposed 20GB HDD, what I got completely formatted was more like 16GB. I think that at least a 120GB HDD will work. The next step for Microsoft will probably be to integrate SSD's into their systems to make them faster. Maybe putting an SSD instead of a HDD will work faster? Maybe it won't work at all? There's only one way to find out :).

@RavenholmHunter You could get the 4GB for a crapload cheaper, and then put in a new HDD. Its pretty damn easy to put a HDD in a new "Slim" Xbox. No screws I think, but there is an enclosure for the HDD which I believe is 2.5" (the HDD not the enlcosure).

@Ahmed7193 All hard drives for everything are the same. The hard drive in a computer is the same that is in a PS3, and Xbox, laptops, very old iPods, etc. All hard drives work the same, and you can hook them up without using a console's adapter like in an Xbox.

Do 'non-standard' drive sizes work? I have a 160GB 4200RPM drive pulled from a laptop I'm not really using for anything. I've heard Xplorer 360 doesn't like certain weird drive sizes but I've had no problems when using Modio

There is notable difference between SSD and HDD on a PS3, just nowhere near as significant as PC, most likely the SATA controller on the PS3 is weaker.

@tcame001 How about a low level re-format tool, got that already,,, any way to just move XBOX (hidden) files over to the drive and boot it. Right now, my 20 GB is disassembled but just squeezed into the hold of the plastic base and plugged into the Xbox, and it works that way nicely, with instant access to remove the drive if need be

there is one step that you didn't show. How did the 2 other files get on the new hard drive (name.txt and compatibility). I think the name text may be the security signature of new drive (each drive has it's own), if tha's true that's very important. I copied all the other files, but i've heard the 360 won't see if it still says it;s the 20 gig ID on a 250 gig drive.

@rotfan77 Lol no that's just what you name your xbox hard drive :L You can edit name.txt to re-name the hdd of your xbox E.G default is: Xbox 360 HDD right? Open name.txt and change to FUCK YOU! And load your console and your HDD is re-named FUCK YOU! and so on. Good for alt codes. So really name.txt is nothing..

There is an exploit patch now that MS does, you cant just change out the hard drive without getting a certain file tranfered over, and to do that..its a pain. There is a gentleman on Ebay that sells the 7200rpm 120g drives for only 90 bucks with a life time warranty....

That is an incorrect statement. For hard drives these days use rare earth metals that are VERY strong. A regular magnet cannot erase the drive. Only a rare earth metal magnet can.
