Spellbinding storytelling. This mini-masterpiece of anime also makes Oren Ishii into a 3-dimensional character. We understand why she is the way she is. We even care about her, despite what she did to Beatrix Kiddo.
Anyone else notice the song playing at the beginning of this sounds a lot like the same harmonica tune from Once upon a time in the west? Quentin always did have that obsession with westerns...
I got confused. The man killed Oren's father was Bill. But why Oren didn't plan to kill Bill rather than help him kill Beatrix( the bride ) on the wedding????
Its a bit disturbing in a way compared to other animated art styles you will see today. This is definitely not a negative thing however. I think the part that makes it look disturbing is the outlines that stress tension with movement. Its a very interesting stylist choice and it emphasizes the pain and emotion that exists in the scene.
im pretty sure the man who kills the dad is bill. when he shows his face the first time it looks like david carradine. also the rings, the handkerchief he cleans the sword off with... the sword is very shiny like a hanzo sword. it makes the same sound too.
@Lordhodge1 It's not confirmed to be Bill, but it's very heavily implied, especially with that long take of the handle and rings. Just because it doesn't resemble David Carradine doesn't mean it's not Bill.
@OJtheModerator I doubt it is Bill anyway, think of how old Bill was at the time of the films, then look back at these. I doubt he would look that young, and I'm sure O-ren would be looking for revenge.
@Lordhodge1 Well, Bill was... I don't know, a little under 70? At the time of the films? And O-Ren Ishii was about 40. I'm basing these ages off the ages of their respective actors. So when O-Ren was nine years old, Bill would've been a little under 40 years old himself. That's conceivable for this depiction of him.
@Lordhodge1 There's a few fan theories for why O-Ren wouldn't seek revenge on Bill. I think the best one is that she was angry at the one to have actually ordered the attack (Boss Matsumoto) and the assassins themselves had only a professional involvement. Once she killed Matsumoto, she'd had her revenge and any relationship she had with Bill was also professional. This fits how she is at the time of the films, because with the squad dissolved, she has no apparent contact with Bill.
@Lordhodge1 Wait a minute. No. I think the characters are actually substantially younger than their respective actors. I just re-watched the video, and O-Ren was 25 at the time of the massacre, which makes her 29 for the majority of the story. This invalidates Bill's out-of-character age, but it implies he's younger too. So that's good.
@OJtheModerator Yeah true, but I think it's just a personal opinion of people who think that Bill was there, I don't see any reason why that would be him which is why I don't think it's him. But that's just my opinion lol.
@Lordhodge1 There's nothing to confirm it either way. There's a number of implications that it is Bill, but whether it's really him is neither proven nor refuted. I like the idea, because it gives some meaning to the focus on the maybe-Bill character in this animation.
@Lordhodge1 Actually, it just doesn't resemble Carradine as he was at the time of the movie's production. It does resemble a younger version of him, which is rather appropriate.
