Its not the loudest! It's only loud on take off due to the jets being located at the rear, the wing is so long that its near to the ground making the noise bounce, it works like an acoustic guitar and resonates.
@oisiaa this is well within the aircrafts limits, the pilots are well trained, no stupid risks are taken and you get a better view of the aircraft this way. Exactly how a museum piece should flown... it shouldnt be babied it was a war machine
these could very well still have been usefull, Laser Targeting pods and new avionics etc if the B-52 could still be usefull today i dont see how these couldnt have, just i imagine britian didnt want to spend the money with the tornado coming in.
Apparently the XF-84 thunderscreech is louder, but it doesn't fly anymore. apparently Tu-95's are loud as well. not that '558 is quiet ;). just how I like it.
I worked on these :) The scramble was the best part of tacevals cos it meant the end of the exercise. If it had ever been for real it was the end of the world
Saw the Vucan at Southend Air Show in the 90's, it plunged down in front of us, then aimed itself vertically skyward, and neither I nor my sons will ever forget it. The sound, the rib rattling howl and the power is something you have to experience in the flesh. Sod global warming.
This aircraft moves out just fine... An optical illusion due to its size... As in the comment below, the Thunderscreech would be the loudest aircraft ever built...
What a piece of kit that was, i remember the 4 plane vulcan scramble when i was a kid at RAF Waddington and if you thought one plane was loud.....................
For sheer loudness, I doubt anything will ever beat the XF-84H "Thunderscreech", a fact for which we should all be thankful. :D A single-engine turboprop with a *supersonic* propeller. Runups could be heard 25 miles away. It could actually induce seizures in people who were unfortunate enough to be too close, and the propeller's shock wave could knock a person down. Definitely belongs in the "what were they thinking?" category.
Check out the XF-84H "Thunderscreech." It was so loud the Edwards AFB control tower literally couldn't hear their radios when the aircraft was running, and had to communicate with it using light signals. Supersonic prop, like the TU-95 which is considered the loudest "operational" airplane.
I love the vulcan. I really really really like that airplane. I understand it wasnt very effective on its only combat operation but i just like the looks of it and the sound.
@eclipse245 decibel wise the B1 is the loudest on earth. They use it for low passes to split eardrums of afghan reels. At AB and low pass the B1 can make you pass out it is so loud!
@eclipse245 No decibels is the measurement of sound. The B1 in use now is much louder than any other aircraft flying today. It also is a high pitched whine that hurts the ears. The Air Force uses the B1 to drive afghan rebels away from areas they shouldn't be in. The aircraft peels down the valley at AB below 250ft. It's devastating to any human on the ground.
@tz138 Turbofans actually go back to 1943 and the first commercial turbofan a RR Conway was used in the fifties. But turbofans have been greatly developed since the Seventies because as you say they make much less noise.
3 Things I always wanted to do but will never ever happen again is flying in the cockpit of an F-101 Voodoo during afterburner take off,in a C-130 Hercules during JATO demo, and the cockpit of an RAF Vulcan Bomber during take off.
The loudest 3 Aircraft I have ever heard at Air Shows and I have seen every loud different Aircraft imaginable but the Vulcan,B1 Lancer, and Concorde to this day are loudest. The Nimrod comes a close second.
The extinct American 6 Engine XB70 Valkyrie, the TU Russian Blackjack and some MIG's are probably the only other Jetcraft ever that are louder.
it's loud because it has straight jet engines as opposed to bypass jet engines which are utilized in the majority of military fighters.

It's climbing slowly because it's near vertical! Wish we had the money to build these planes in 2012!

Is clear the struggle of the plane to keep climbing! I think some afterburners would help!
DoomDriver 2 weeks ago
@DoomDriver In no way does this aircraft struggle to climb! There's about 80,000 lb's of thrust pushing her up there!
MrClaretMatt 2 weeks ago
@MrClaretMatt yes, the plane have a lot of thrust but it shows a slow climbing!

@eclipse245 The B-1b uses 4 turbofan engines as opposed to the 4 turbojet engines in the Vulcan. The turbofan design creates less noise.

@tz138 Yeah I know. Because the B-1 is equipped with newer technology :P Turbojet is pretty old technology, one of the first if I'm not mistaken.
